The Who - Quadrophenia Report Abuse
The Who invented the genre of the rock opera with Tommy, but they truly mastered it with Quadrophenia.

Pink Floyd - The Wall Report Abuse
This double album is an amazing piece of music. Since all the songs tell a story if played in order, it's one of the few double albums that I typically listen to in its entirety, in order.

The Beatles - White Album Report Abuse
While some may say that this album is a bit of a mess, with too many different themes and styles mixed into one hodgepodge double album, I disagree completely. This album is an eclectic mix of the many facets of The Beatles, mixing pop, folk, rock, and experimentation all into one. If I could only have one Beatles album, I'd choose this one.

Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde Report Abuse
Possible one of the first double albums released as an "artistic statement" Blonde On Blonde is a bold record with some of the deepest lyrics and best musical arrangements of Dylan's career.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness Report Abuse
I was hesitant to put this on the list because I believe that this is a case of where a mediocre double album could've been one great single album. However, I sort of view this album as Smashing Pumpkins fall from grace, so I included it if only for its histpric significance.
