Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana Report Abuse
Kurt Cobain said he wrote this song to describe his generation, and inadvertently the song wound up defining his generation. While we can debate what the song is really about, it kind of doesn't matter. When you hear the loud guitars and pounding drums and Kurt's screaming lyrics, it means something to you, even if you can't define it.

Jesus Christ Pose - Soundgarden Report Abuse
Soundgarden have a lot more musical talent than people give them credit for, and this song is the epitome of their fantastically noisy rock and roll.

Would - Alice in Chains Report Abuse
This band walked the fine line between grunge and metal, but they undoubtedly had a huge influence on grunge. This song has a fairly simple riff, backed by lud thunderous drums, all building up to the moment when the guitars come in at full force and Stanley sings, "Am I wrong, have I gone too far to get home?" Classic.

Hunger Strike - Temple of the Dog Report Abuse
Sadly this supergroup comprised of Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell only recorded one album. These two iconic rock vocalists really worked well together, pushing each other harder throughout the song, each of them showcasing their own unique vocals without one overpowering the other.

Daughter - Pearl Jam Report Abuse
Pearl Jam left a lasting impression on the Grunge scene, some would say only surpassed by Nirvana yet definitely within the company as such greats as Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots. This song in itself allows you to hear Pearl Jam in a truly inclusive measure and speaks of a snapshot of youth filled with strife and grit without sacrificing hope.

Violet - Hole Report Abuse
There's much debate about whether or not Kurt wrote the songs for Courtney. Whether or not those rumors are true, this is a great song. Love really knows how to rock out, spiting out lyrics, "Go on, take everything, take everything, I want you to!!!"

Whirlwind - The Gits Report Abuse
Mia Zapata, the leader singer and front woman for The Gits had a truly unique voice Grunge scene and fashioned her songs without pretense. While such themes such as self sacrifice and suffering were common, hopeful sentiments and heart felt pieces were commonplace, The Gits were anything but a 1 dimensional angst ridden troup that tried to flood the Grunge scene and this song is proof of that. Some argue that Courtney Love drew inspiration from Mia's memorable and raw voice, and I agree.

This entry is ludicrous. No matter how good the song may have been it wasn't even close to Grunge. You might as well call it Rap or Metal. It wasn't any of those.
