Jay-Z Report Abuse
Reasonable Doubt + The Blueprint were both 5 Mic albums as voted by The Source Magazine, he is one of only two rappers to achieve this honor. He is the favorite rapper of Lil Wayne, Drake, and Kanye West among many others. He doesn't write his lyrics down, and recites them all from memory while still including multi-syllable rhymes that last for multiple bars. It's an absolute joke that Kid Cudi and Wiz Khalifa, though both very talented, are ranked above him.

Dustin Kensrue (Thrice) Report Abuse
Lyrics often derived from myth or legend that can be read as stand-alone poetry, particularly many songs from The Alchemy Index .

The way Dustin can tell a story is really captivating, and beautifully reflected by the music.. His lyrics are incredible.

Aaron Weiss (mewithoutYou) Report Abuse
I love Dylan and Lacey and Oberst and Chuck D and Tupac, but Aaron Weiss is my favorite lyricist, period. mewithoutYou songs cover some incredibly heavy material, and they do so by utilizing creative metaphors and complex rhyme structures. Aaron is well-versed in many religious texts and mythologies, and this is apparent in his songwriting. If you haven't heard mwY before, grab a copy of Brother, Sister or Catch For Us The Foxes. You'll thank me later.

Most people have only heard his 'radio' songs, but the songs that don't hit the waves are some of the most intellectual and creative pieces of work available in mp3. 9 songs out of 10 will have words in them you'll need a dictionary for.

Katy Perry definitely deserves to be higher on the list. She writes all of her own stuff and she had a hand in a lot of the most popular songs out today. I'm not a huge fan of her style of music but there's no denying the artistry in her lyrics

See "Scattered Black and Whites", "Starlings", "Ever There", New Born", "Mirrorball", and on and on.. His words are simple yet evocative, and are given the kind of soaring melodies so often absent in lyrics of this caliber.

Billy Werner - lyricist, singer for Saetia Report Abuse
Say what you will about his vocals but lyrically, written on paper, his work is hauntingly surreal. Postlapsaria, , Ariadne's Thread, Notres Langues Nous Trompent, One Dying Wish. So much of his material is so incredible but Saetia gets pigeonholed too easily and disregarded. He is truly one of the eords greatest poets and lyricists.
