This city's name refers to the mythological bird that ignites before it dies and is reborn from its own ashes. Absolutely an amazing name for a city.

Rio De Janeiro (Brazil) Report Abuse
69 points - added 3 years ago by JDBLists - 1 comment
Comments:
The Guanabara Bay, in the margins of which the city organized, was discovered by Portuguese explorer Gaspar de Lemos on January 1, 1502. Although it is stated that the name Rio de Janeiro (january river) was chosen because of the Portuguese belief that this bay was the mouth of a river, in fact, at the time, there was no distinction between naming rivers, bays and bags - reason why what was the body of water properly designated as a river.

The name came into being when Job Charnock asked a farmer the name of the area around Hooghly River. The farmer misunderstood due to language problems and thought that he was referring as to when he harvested his paddy. He proudly replied "Kal Kaata" meaning "I cut it yesterday." Job Charnock thought that the name of the place is Calcutta.

A fairly martial-sounding name when translated to English, Vladivostok is nonetheless a cool sounding name. Just saying it can make you feel Russian!
