Historically, the IDF, IAF, etc, have proven themselves in every conflict they've been involved in. Does this mean that they would stack up in sheer capability to a G8 (top 8 industrial capacity) nation or a country like India (the 3rd largest military behind China and U.S.)? Probably not. It is true that the Taliban are evil but some innocent people loose their lives just because they happen to be in the same building as a terrorist. It may not seem much to other people but to that person's family, it's devistating. I know sometimes there is no other option but sometimes there is.

You should ask yourself how many Afghan and other people in the world would be dead if it wasn't for people like my friends giving their lives. The Taliban is evil, they enforce an antiquated lifestyle on the people under their control, one of control, abuse and death. It is regrettable, very regrettable, that innocent civilians are sometimes killed, but due to the Taliban tactic of hiding in civilian areas it's going to happen. The fact is that the United States can't have a government in place anywhere in the world that allows terrorists to run training camps on their soil. If we don't act, terrorists will be doing something much worse than flying jets into buildings.

one guest is asking why germans are always on the wrong side. I would say they are always on the right side when they are on their own side. Why should they not defend themselves from attacks. They followed once a misleading leader. But which nation had not? At the moment they are on the very right side. They are in the NATO and they protect Israel. They helped Europe and the free world in many battles since two thousand years. They had a great share in defeating the islam threat in the 8th, 16.th and 18th. century in a couple of battles in which the German talents got their display. I'm British, and the UK does have some superb military forces, but the German soldier is unsurpassed and the German Army has the best leadership at NCO level - most important in a combat situation. The German forces in WW1 and WW2 were man for man better than any other army and it took the 3 greatest industrial powers in the world to defeat them in BOTH conflicts. Their discipline and resourcefullness is second to none and GSG9 are a match for any other special forces

The most important weapon in any war is the people. The German nation would not tolerate any kind of large-scale aggression from Germany ever again. I live here and know what I am talking about. Their army is brilliantly equipped, and their soldiers are well trained, but feel guilty about fighting – Fact! The truth is that some countries have fought wars recently and some haven't... Some have won and some have lost. The last war the UK lost was the American war of independence. British soldiers have been cutting their teeth around the world for 250 years nonstop! That's right, the UK hasn't really had peace for almost 3 centuries. Israel the same since WWII – fighting nonstop. A good army is one that has fought and won a lot, just like a football team.... they generally have a high quality military, but fall short with the heavy Armour. Mobile artillery is slow and beaten by the AS-90 and the leopard isnt as good as the challenger 2. Leapard is cheaper and more reliable (engine), but C2 has worlds best track record and statistics.

Tanks don't mean anything when you have American guided missles and rockets that can them them out miles away.

Why is it that all of the special forces around the world, especially the US's GB's,seals and rangers, all say they are the best. What no one remembers is that Canada's still the country training them. Everyone thinks," oh canada is 15th on the strength list, there not strong at all." well if that's true why does every country want Canada to train thier military. We have the best force worldwide. We don't have the budget or the numbers of the US. But we still have the heaviest hardest training to be an elite. Remember nine out of ten top soldiers are washed out of the JTF2 over all. That's 90% for those who can't do math. Compared to the 40% of the American elite forces. Hmmm and who has the bigger budget?? Enough said.

Th US military is the most powerful in the world. The US ARMY however, given it's size and firepower, is quite poor. Tactically they generally need massive superiority and firepower in any conflict to prevail (Bastogne in WW2 aside). I took part in excercises with the US Army with the British Army acting as the 'enemy' and it was embarrasing how easy it was to outwit standard US Army units again and again. Different story against the Seals and Marines, but they are a small part of US Forces.

Just HAD to add, so you can check it - first meeting with Japanese in WW2 resulted in 5 KIA for us 240 for the Japanese. 20,000 Japanese marines including South Pacific Regiment landed on AN ISLAND and were met by 542 of us (not USA but US) we were pushed back but at irrowaiba ridge made a stand and from there pushed what was left of the Japanese BACK! NOT trained by the UK . NOT trained in FIJI, a place called Kunungra and Puckapunyal and Singleton and other places! Indonesians, Filipana's etc COME here to train - not the other way around. In the Philippines Green Berets operate in Mindanao and some of our special forces do to. It's not supposed to be known because the Philis constitution forbids it, but hunt around, its out there. US has overwhelming fire power but not overwhelming best trained men, good men but in Vietnam MORE US officers actually died by being shot in the back by their own men than in combat at the hands of the VC. ONE last point - up to the LAST 6 MONTHS of WW2 there were more British Army, Navy and Air Force ops in direct conflict with the enemy on ALL fronts than US troops in direct conflict - once again information that is available but conviently either not checked or NOT remembered!

One country in the world spends more to put soldiers in the field than the US.Only ONE country - it is NOT the U.K. They won many a fight the US got credit for in the Pacific in ww2. China may have a much bigger army that the US, but can it deploy outside its own borders or the borders of countries next to it like Korea? Can it invade North America for instance? USA can invade most countries on this planet. Of course; while we could invade China, they would probably overwhelm us quickly. Not saying we should, just pointing things out. You have to be able to deploy, that means ships, organization, communications, satillites, etc. USA number one in all counts.

I am in the U.S Army and I have worked along side with soldiers from most of these different countries you all talk about. There is NO country that can withstand a full force battle with the U.S. Don't look at the 10 or 20% of soldiers and equipment that you see fighting in Iraq or Afghan. In the big picture we will destroy any force there is. I have witness a combine exercise between all branchs of the mitilary and I stand by what i say.

It's tough for people to put aside political ideology and vote objectively on a poll like this. I think, from an objective standpoint, rankings would have to go: China, U.S. India, Russia, then from there the G8 Nations not already mentioned (leaving out Japan, which has no standing military, and including Pakistan, which is not G8): UK, Germany, Canada, Pakistan, France, Italy (in that order); then, of the smaller nations, S Korea, N Korea, Vietnam, and Israel. This is just based on overall military capacity + general equipment, training, apparent readiness.

Having served with The US Mountain Rangers in Afghan..indeed they are a well trained force on par with The British Reserve Trained Infantry i'd say. The DEA and other American drug enforcement organizations gives Mexican law enforcement their missions that are too dangerous for them to do themselves.

Mexican Federal Police are super elite. 1-5 officers are killed each month fighting the drug cartels. Mexico is a great country with a history richer then most others in the world.

The Mexican Marines are some tough guys. Mexican Marines or Marinas Mexicanas as they are called in Spanish helped catch a top drug cartel member and the media made the mistake of letting one the Marines names out and the cartel members killed his mom, aunt, and two sisters. Basically they killed everyone who was at his home of address, if he had been there with his wife and kids they would have killed them too. This shows how tough the Marinas are because they are not afraid of going after these brutal cartel members who are not afraid or do not care about killing family members and children.

I'm biased cause I am American and grew up thinking the Marines were the best in the world, I served four years in the US Marines and tried out for recon. In my experience the toughest military people I have met or have heard about through other military members were the US Marine Force Recon, US Marine Scout Sniper, Navy Seals, Army Rangers, Green Berets, Delta Force, British SAS, British SBS, US Air Force Pararescuemen, US Coast Guard Search and Rescue teams, French Foreign Legion, Mexican Federale, Mexican Fuerzas Especiales (Mexican Special Forces), Mexican Drug Smugglers,although smugglers are not officially military and are seen as negative, I have met some that have been in the most violent situations I have ever been told. Now the military members I have known had been in some violent situations, the smuggler is the only to go into detail about what he had been through. I'm not saying the Smuggler is better or tougher then the military men I have known. I'm just saying that they never went into detail about the situations they had been in. Even though I know they had been in some hairy situations.

Canadians have a history of being able to acomplish great things in battle despite being smaller in numbers. 1917 Vimy Ridge. This was the first time all of the Canadians fought togeather in WW1. Vimy had been a key point in the war and the French and British had both failed trying to capture it. At this time Canada had been a country for 50 years and were still pretty small in the eyes of the world. Vimy Ridge changed that. Also on in 1944 on D-Day despite being the smallest of the allied forces we were the only one able to acomplish the goal to clear the beach and push into France. No disrespect to the US or the British but they fell slightly short of the mission objectives. Canada shouldn't be top 5 for sure but we are higher than 21.

WIth those few men its a bit overhelmed, they fought great no offense, but to lead WW1 or WW2 it were far to less servicemen. However it supported Britain with goods as well and did its part.

Being a Canadian soldier myself: many underestimate the Canadian Forces, but we do have one of the best fighting forces in the world, and one of the best trained since we are smaller, therefore, have more time and money to train. In fact, a Reg force infantry soldier has the same experience of a US Army Ranger rifleman once they complete their infantry training. (I hope saying that doesn't start a debate). That is why an army buddy of mine says we're like the Greek Spartans! We do have money problems, and lack of political will, but we are growing both in strength and numbers since the "Decade of Darkness" (the 90's) where funding was cut and the forces suffered from a poor public image. Canada's mission in Afghanistan, and the growing number of recruits in the ranks, has proven this. I just wish we had a better navy, with air craft carriers.

The reason why serbian soldiers were happy when they came out of their bunkers were because they were relieved they did not have to fight another losing ground battle. During the bombing the Serbian armed forces hid in bunkers because they cared more about their own personal safety then their citizens safety.

the philippine army is very good because they trained every terrain possible but the tchnology is poor, the army doesnt have main battle tanks not even 1 the vehicles you see in the magindanao martial law are only light tanks and APC since the Americans had left the Philippines in the 90's we have no strong defense on land. 2nd surface to air missiles because its important to defend the atmosphere that air raids or even bombing in the air is imminent and we have nothing to defend us with but only guns. 3rd artillery the mobile ones because we need to establish order to Mindanao and fight the MILF because it cross rage in the country, artillery can destroy anything we want, we could surely buy at least 5 MRLS to secure the safety of the people. 4th an aircraft that is a multirole, jet figther and ground attack aircrafts to secure air superiority to the sky and defeat easily the rebels, we need also surveillance to see the movement of enemy from the sky and bombers as well. 5th attack helicopters to secure the air superiority in the philippine sky. 6th are submarines to srcure the depths of the philippines. 7th is destroyers cruisers to bombard enemies from shores. 8th aircraft carrier after you had done the 7 things you can buy that particular thing for the new flagship of the philippines. 9th ballistic missiles but this is optional. If the economy flows very well and it is rich we could buy and do this things..

Qualitatively, industrialized nations with larger militaries are probably going to score higher. France's army is about the 13th largest in the world. Their financial expenditures on their military, however, are 4th highest, so probably more technology emphasis than focus on number of personnel. Aside from that, people are probably going to vote up or down based on what they think of the country or some opinion about a country's special forces or commandos, etc. These things get voted up or down a lot depending on who visits the website and how they vote. Vietnam has been weakened for several decades after the corruption of Soviet Union. Vietnam currently can't manufacture its own modern technology such as China or India did. Countries who can't self supply its own military hardwares will be dependent in any war.

An army more suitable for peacekeeping rather than a full scale conflict, Argentina historically has fought a real war and in mid-intensity conflict, always came out second, were beaten by chileans, bolivians, paraguayans, british, lets be honest the argentinians could not fight even the uruguayans, nevertheless their officers are well trained and educated, they make good staff and planners, multiple applications for them but combat is not one of them.
