Everyday Items Used as Musical Instruments

23 items ranked

Oftentimes people use everyday items to make rhythm or to make melody, usually because they are bored. Sometimes, though it is more intentional and even bands have been made around home-made instruments using just stuff around the house.

Pencils or Pens Report Abuse
These also are very common to keep a rhythm. If someone has to have one of these objects in their hands, then using them to tap is very easy to do.

Body parts such as Fingers, Hands or Feet Report Abuse
This is probably the most common. People will tap these body parts to keep some sort of rhythm to whatever song is in their heads, so it makes the top of the list, especially since these instruments are with people all the time.

Balloons Report Abuse
Balloons are great. You can stretch the opening so that it is thin and let the air out slowly. A high pitch sound results. A talented person can control the pitch well and even bring rhythm to it, making it an excellent musical instrument.

Spoons Report Abuse
This is a very old means of making music. Taking two spoons and putting the concave ends together and snapping them together. Somewhat like home-made castanets. Very practical and useful. Some people are very talented with doing the spoons.

Straws put Together Report Abuse
Straws can be put together in various configurations to make the sound of various instruments. I saw a video of a man from Japan who was able to make sounds of instruments such as the clarinet and the trumpet simply by putting together everyday straws in very specific configurations. Quite amazing really.
