I first read this book when I was in 3rd grade and in the past 20 years I have read it at least 50 times. My copy is beaten and battered, has no front cover, and may be missing a few pages, but I will never get a new one. This book was magical back then and still now I love little quick-witted Matilda.

The Color Purple - Alice Walker
Such a great book, made into a great movie, about a girl who is abused by various people in her life over 20 years and eventually has a reawakening. It is such a touching story and a definitely tearjerker. Its infamy alone puts it toward the top of this list.

Beach Road - James Patterson
Though this book was published by Little, Brown in 2006, it was originally published in 1988 and it is one of my favorite books of all time. Many people have given it poor reviews but it absolutely blew my mind. The twist was a shock that I would never have guessed in a million years.

A book about sex, drugs, and getting wasted should not necessarily be this funny but it really is. It's about college students who have no direction in life and basically just want to get laid. The typical college story of the 2000's... only it was written in the 1980's.
