Dick Francis, a jockey in his time, wrote a number of novels in the crime genre, all based in the world of horse racing. His books defy classification, for I think he created a genre of his own which was part thriller, part mystery and part human drama. His heroes had a fascinatingly stoic, a realistically man-on-the-street persona, which gave them an appeal all of their own. Here's a list of his best works:
