Just came back from Christchurch. Things are still quite dead there due to the 2011 Earthquake. I stayed near the Cathedral at Rendezvous Hotel, it has lost its former glory and has not been restored. I do hope things will change 2-3 years from now

Agree with your comment on Hamilton, can be depressing place and see lots more crime
Hamilton is a toilet. The CBD (if you can call it that) feels cramped, it is cold, foggy and damp. There is nothing to do, apart from commit suicide; in which case you have plenty of bridges to choose from. The place should've been bombed years ago. Auckland is better, especially the North Shore and Rodney.
Hamilton is a thriving go-ahead city with lots to recommend it - the shopping is great, the riverside walking and biking trails, Hamilton Gardens, the university with its opportunity to study as well as see live performance at low, low prices, and the weather is milder than anywhere else I've lived. Nothing is far from anywhere else, and Hamilton shopping includes The Base with its big box stores, Frankton with its laid-back charm, and bus travel is cheap. And where else can an oldie see the latest movies for $6! Yep, it's all good in Hamilton.

Ordinary town but the yellow-eyed penguin tour made it all worth it. Up close and personal with penguins.

At any time of the year it is a fresh and vibrant not so big little city that has more going for it than Rotorua! At anytime of the year with that 'BEAUTIFUL' Maunga TARANAKI as its backdrop focal point it is a meca for the tramping enthusiat and if that was not enough you could go visit the wonder of PUKEKURA park, surfing just down the coastal highway, visit NZ's only Pacifist strong hold that is-(esteemed in history)- 'PARIHAKA' and "feel the past" that is only a scenic short drive away along the coast, go diving or even climb the breath taking PARATUTU rock for the not so keen tramper, what about the seaside walkways and the WINDWONDE or even the World War2 bunkers. I don't live there but feel that IT IS the MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY IN NZ!!!
