Very intelligent, loyal dog breed. Mine began fetching a ball at 11 weeks old.

Very protective dog, very loyal also, the deep bark and the natural pouncing of its paws to a intruder is enough to detour the most willing.

Belgian Malinois Report Abuse
It is classed as a seperate breed from the other three .It is faster leaner, attacks with much much more force than a German shepherd. It is also slightley taller than a German shepherd. If you google wikianswers: what arew the top ten guard dog breeds, give a guess who's on top? Yup, the mal. It is also replacing the GSD (german shepherd dog) in policing.

They DO look very puny alongside a full grown 28'' GSD. They just haven't got the weight behind them to do the job properly, or the presence, or the command, or the looks, or the brains, or the cuddliness ! They're shoulder angulation is terrible, not suitable for long distances, small mouth, little fur, and BONY! I'd like to see a BSD against a proper GERMAN trained schutzhund dog - NO CONTEST!

Duh - They're all different breeds! No it doesn't attack with more force than a GSD or Rottweiler. And no its not taller than a GSD. Mal's are more agile thats about it, and maybe better for training. Not a good deterrent in my opinion. They look pretty puny as well.

This dog is #1 and there is not even a close second. The fact that they are listed as third makes this page somewhat of a joke. If you don’t believe me just ask the armed forces, FBI, local law enforcement, or a personal protection trainer.

I am a police officer who served 3 tours in Iraq 1 tour afganistan. When it comes to my life and my family's lives the only dog I trust and I've been around trained with 3 other breeds the gsd is in my opinion and the opinion of my department the best all round work dog ever bred.they have adapted to be unselfish and keen to every aspect of what the job requires.I've seen shepherdsome take bullets and keep fighting they will protect you till death and you will respect that after you have seen it first hand.if you ever need a dog to make you feel safe you need to have a shepherd. They take their job very seriously and if you ever think they don't know what there job is think again. The German Shepherd is a dog, there isn't anything more dangerous on the planet than human beings but if you want a companion who let blind see find your child when he or she is missing.make you laugh when you don't feel good or to tangle with a bad guy when he enters your house uninvited the German Shepherd is your dog.since they have been around fact is they have saved more lives then any other dog on the planet combined. I don't see them being all together replaced by aNY other breed any time soon.Don't overlook a shepherd and please for your own safety don't test 1 either.

Gsds are the best guard dogs and police dogs because of their protective, loving, agile and courageous nature.Infact they are the most intelligent large dog.
Added 10 years ago by guest, 1 point Vote + to improve this comment's ranking Vote - to decrease this comment's ranking
Deserves 1# they have one of the most feared bites, military GSD are belived to have a 500-700 bite force. Will defend its owner no matter what and won't think twice about giving its life for them. A GSD can beat a Mal it just needs to get his huge mouth in the Mals small scrawny head and it's over. They are more beautiful and darker color then the scrawny small hyper Mal. GSD are very smart they are ranked 3rd most smartest while the Mal isn't even in the top 10. Don't confuse trainability with intelligence. Mals think everything is a game while GSD have true aggression. Throw that ball off a cliff... Lol the Mal just do's and then think later, the GSD will look at you and be like "are you serious?".

I prefer the Malinois. The GSD has its back legs shorter, looks like a hyena and too much fur.

I own a German shepherd. They are great guard dogs. The dog has all the qualities you will like to have in a dog. Its beautiful, well attached with family and kids, playful.. but when it senses a danger or a competition its different, he just stands tall and gives that intimidating German shepherd look and everything backs off. I am more than 100 percent sure that a properly trained German shepherd will do what he is told to, better than any other dog.

it's German Shepherd, not shepard! Bonds intensely with it's human family. Intelligent, alert, knowing and perceptive. I'd trust a Shepherd's intuition about people over my own. Big, bold, strong, protective and watchful. A big handsome GSD doesn't need to voice at anyone, just a look and the fearless body language is enough - but believe me - they'll 'go' if they have to and they won't back down once they have. Properly trained makes a super companion. I've kept GSDs for 16ys.

The Cane Corso is intelligent, agile, athletic and has incredible stamina.  They are phenomenal hunters, easily trained and guard their families with every part of their being. I own two of these wonderful animals and they are by far the best all around protector, guardian, companion dog I have ever owned. My male even woke my family at three in the morning when a neighbors home caught fire. Everything you may read about a true Cane Corso is 100% accurate.
Added 13 years ago by guest, 5 points Vote + to improve this comment's ranking Vote - to decrease this comment's ranking
The Cane Corso is a descendant of the canis pugnax,[2] dogs used by the Romans in warfare. Its name derives from cane da corso, an old term for those catch dogs used in rural activities (for cattle and swine; boar hunting, and bear fighting) as distinct from cane da camera which indicates the catch dog kept as a bodyguard.

These dogs are not fragile skinny little things , try knocking one over on their side lol aint gonna happen, their speed is incredible ,and they can punch with those long front legs, and one thing about the Doberman they don't need gaurd training you have to train them when its not time to guard, this instinct is built into the breed. the comment all mouth and no action haha man you really need to do your homework on Dobermans , life after death come to my house jump the fence and find out. she loves my friends and their pets if she knows I like them , she is very loyal and follows me everywhere , she doesn't even bark , shes just that sneaky,

I own both a Doberman and a German Shepherd and both are amazing. My Doberman is 5 and he is the BEST dog I have ever owned. He is very friendly to people and other animals. He is the smartest and the most loyal dog we have ever owned. Make no mistake about it however he will defend his home and his family with his life. He has had no "formal" training...he just knows. To the person that made the stupid comment that Dobermans are a joke - well my friend - I invite you to walk into my house uninvited. My "joke" will put u in the hospital - if your lucky! A Doberman can definately back up their bark. They are agile, smart and they don't get tired. They will fight as long as you want to and will be the last one standing. Seen their teeth? Felt their bite? I'm going to guess not - or you wouldn't be making dumb comments like that.

We had to install a 6 foot fence around our property because our male doberman was so aggresive and territorial, we knew he would end up going over our shorter fence and hurting someone. He is extremely territorial. If you come within 100 yards of his fence, he becomes aggresive towards you. Once you're walking past his fence, he follows you sprinting back and forth, barking and growling at you. He continues this behavior until he can't detect you anymore. It is very intimidating. He is also adept at detecting people outside when he is inside. It's uncanny. I have never seen a better WATCH DOG. I don't exactly know what would happen if someone came over the fence. He's still young and not fully mature and he has had no real formal protection training. I'm sure that if they became aggresive towards him or his pack, he would attack and you would have to kill him to save yourself. I'm not sure what he would do if you weren't aggresive towards him or me. I think when he's mature, he would probably attack and it would be bad for the intruder. The downside is that he is only 80 lbs but he is 80 lbs of pure muscle. he doesn't have the mass of a mastiff or Rottweiler but I'm not sure that would matter if he really went after someone. Now, I think if you have a doberman that has actually been trained to attack, you will have an outstanding guard dog. I will also add, most dogs that haven't actually been trained to attack a human aren't going to attack a human, at least not effectively. I have seen non-protection trained German shepards sit there and watch their owners get simulated attacked. If you attacked me or my wife, the non-protection trained doberman is going to send you to the ER. Just my two cents worth on the doberman pinscher.

Dobermans are the fifth smartest dog in the world and they attack in every direction including straight up. They can easily jump and bite a 6'2" man in the face. They can easily out run you. They are friendly to their owners but not to strangers. The Marines used Dobermans in Vietnam. Police no longer use them because of lawsuits. A German Shepard will bite and hold. A doberman will turn your arms and legs to hamburger. To the person who said they look like skinny fragile things I would love to see you go against my doberman with your bare hands. My dog would rip you apart.

Dobermans are by far the best you can have for many reasons. They are extremely intimidating looking, protective of their territory, apprehensive of strangers. They will stand their ground in the presence of an unknown, yet are unlikely to bite unless the unknown crosses their line. So you dont have liability to worry about. They are loyal, loving, well tempered and great around kids!

I live in upstate new york and we have a bad coyote problem. I have a black Russian terrier. About three months ago the state put out 4 pumas to kill of the coyote problem in my area. Well let's keep this short and say there is now only three and I have a 4000 dollar fine. I just couldn't be mad at him though he was just doing his job.....a expensive one.

Yes the breed is very capable of doing this sort of thing, my brt max is is a very powerful protective dog, I live in Pennsylvania were there is a lot of deer and max always goes crazy when he sees them through the window. I was outside one day feeding my chickens and I heard a loud scream. I was so confused I did not know what it was. Max was supposed to be in his kennel but he jumped out of a 6 foot chicken wire fence and he went after the deer. In my front yard a 143 pound deer Lies there dead. I did not know whether to be mad or happy so I just put max inside and gave the deer to my buddy who loves deer meat. Best dog there is.

Dear owner of Jack, allowing your dog to assess the situation for you can be really dangerous. Unless a SERIOUS threat is present, you should not allow your dog to get in front of you, YOU are the leader not your dog. You can imagine the consequences of a wrong assessment by your dog... Hope you dont take my advice in a wrong way:)

This dog is truly a guard dog. I was walking down the road with my brt terrier, his name is ace and he is 135 pounds. As we are walking my neighbors caucasion Shepard and tibetin mastiff come running out at us growling and barking. Ace goes right in front of me to protect me, the caucasion Shepard charges the both of us and within a matter of seconds ace had bitten the spine of the dog and killed it. Then he started charge the tibetin mastiff and this wasn't much of a fight, the tibetin mastiff got severly injured and limped away. Don't just jump to conclusions and say this dog is aggressive I dont want one. The breed is just very protect over it's loved ones. It's not a surprise they call them manstoppers. Trust me I am not proud of him killing a 210 pound dog but I am extremely proud and great ful that ace was willing to put his life on the line for me. I highly suggest you buy this breed of dog.

Black Russian terriers are by far the best dog breed there is. My brt ,jack, is the most loyal dog. He very protective over my whole family. When I am walking him he stayed by my side all of the time, when somebody approaches that he does not know he goes in front of me and guards me. He will not snap at the person but if he ,she , shows a threat then there is no time wasted and he will attack. They are not aggressive dogs just protective over the family. They are very brave dogs to, I was playing with my nieghbors Doberman and he was on top of me and jack came running after the dog and tackled him to the floor when jack was only 6 months old. Now that he is 3 years old he is much faster and more mature, but he still has his tendinsies to run after animals. Me and him were in the back yard and a coyote walked in and jack saw him and took off after it I was so nervous he would get killed because they are not street smart without training . I heard a help deep in the woods and I thought he was dead I went running into the woods and there he was standing over the coyote laying dead on the floor. It turns out that the coyote was was just over 75 pounds. Almost like a small wolf. The brt teeth are shaped like scissors so they bite the spine of there prey and brake it in half with there teeth. I highly suggest getting a brt best dog in the world(:(:(:(:(:):):):)

As a former owner of a Boxer, I'm off the opinion that your "boxer didn't get a scratch on him after your 3 dogs German Shepherd, Doberman, Boxer got into a fifht". No way, no how would that happen vs a German Shepherd that was worth his weight. Doberman possibly. Alsatian...aint happening. Your boxer watched from the sidelines.

I had a boxer during my early teens and it was a loyal, intelligent, and good guard dog. Selective breeding has bred much of the fierceness out of the boxer. 50 years ago I'd say the boxer takes the German Shepherd (Alsatian). Today, the German Shepherd hands down.

English Mastiffs if raised with the family is a fierce protector, sometimes too much so. I have raised two and found them to be wonderful. Lots of different dog breeds out there and different circumstances that come up. However, if someone was actually assaulting myself or family member, no other dog in the world I would want by my side. Bite force and size coupled with loyalty and ferocity when challenged is un equal.

Although there are numerious guard dogs (most of them outside the USA), depending on the situation (someone breaking into the home while you are there), its hard to pick against the english mastiff

born guard dog, they rarely bark, but it is in its nature to defend their territory and family, and is more a silent guard rather than a barker. When an intruder is caught they are more likely to hold them at bay, either by trapping them in a corner or laying on top of them rather than an all out attack. You do not need to train them to guard. No matter how friendly they are, if they sense danger they will naturally guard on their own unless the owners are there to tell them otherwise. As a guard dog they are only reliable if their master is with them, thus defeating the purpose of having an american bulldog as a guard dog. they are not friendlier a than a PItbull they are dogs and human characteristics should not be applied to animals. Animals do not make friends with each other. they are very strong and very powerfull and as such should be cared and treated with the correct care and respect. these dogs have been bred for one purpose only. to be big powerful dominant working catch dogs bred to catch wild hogs.

i happen to have 2 american bull dogs and they are definetly the BEST!!! They are absolutly AMAZING with humans, and also, they are great guard dogs and loyal to their masters. And will practically fight to the end to protect their loved ones. I happen to know because both of my dogs are complete suck ups and LOVE attention when guest come around and will allways stick right to my side when i tell them to come with me :D However, the one downside is that they are not great with other dogs, and to go along with that they are AMAZINGLY tough. So if you havent gotten the right training then you might have some problems their (aka, they will try and kill (and succed if your not carefull) another dog if they see one). And they dont like to be left alone either. The other thing is that people comenly mistake them for PITBULLS!! IT drives me insane, they are way friendlier and stronger than pitbulls so watch out for that!

I can agree with them being #2. Russian Ovcharka clearly is number 1. Both breeds, if bred true to form, and with the required traits are the most dangerous and capable dog breeds hands down.

Extremely dominant breed, I had one and in many occasions i was afraid she could really hurt someone. She killed several small animals that trespassed our property. I can only say that this breed is a dangerous weapon if in wrong hands. I would never get another one.

The fact that a Fila is number 27 shows how much people really know about guard dogs. Easily number one or two. Have a genetic disposition to hate all strangers. During a dog show the judge can not even touch the breed because he would be attacked.

Great Dane Report Abuse
Although they've gotten a bad rap as goofy, overly friendly dogs, more likely to lick a marauder than stop one, none of this is actually true of the Dane breed. I've owned several Great Danes and they have all been not only intimidating in size , but more than willing (and able) to take down an intruder or perceived threat. Originally called the German Mastiff, they have traits common to other mastiffs, i.e., holding a human down rather than full on attack, and being able to go from 0-100 on the aggression scale if the situation calls for it. They are also silent attackers. One forum poster talks about having owned many Danes over the years and seeing them run like lightning across a field in silence to take down an intruder.

I love my caucasian dearly, and he loves me, but it's the worst mistake I've ever made. I haven't had visitors in my house in nearly two years, and, whenever I try to leave, she starts barking her head off. Caucasians are naturally aggressive, mean, and nasty, all in the guise of protecting me. My Stella weighs about 175 pounds, and can leave my house anytime she wants to, by breaking down the front door. It took a lot of training to stop her from doing this. My homeowners insurance increased by six fold when I got her.

I agree with you that the CO is a tremendously powerful guardian, and one of the top in the world. However, to say that it would destroy an english mastiff with such ease is laughable. Please do some research on jaw size and power as well. On a side note the Tosa Inu and Kangal are just as formidable as well...

This dog would destroy the present top 5 all together. Do some research on breeds before you spout your uneducated mouth. CO are one of the top 5 most dangerous dogs in the world. A 160-220 pound dog with agility, speed and extreme defensive drive is no joke and would destroy virtually every breed. Discovery did an entire show on how dangerous the breed is. Look it up on YouTube.

Shar Pei Report Abuse
Garding is the reason I brought this breed in the first place, as a kid I remembers the scareist dog on the street was a shar pei then when I started to work away from home I wanted a good gard dog for my family it was between an akita and a shar pei. we got the shar pei because they are small enough for my wife to walk but still tough enough to hold there ground. We have had them for 3 years and the make a great gard dog and family member.

It is passionately devoted to the family, but once dusk falls, no longer recognises anyone who doesn't live in the house as a friend. NOT a dog for people who don' know what they're doing, as needs gentle but firm handling and must be kept indoors or in an enclosed area at night.

Standard Poodle Report Abuse
A "foo foo" dog these are not!! They are loving, but very protective of their family. Super smart, easy to train and they don't shed one hair!! (Great if you are allergic). My standard poodle is a better guard dog than my German Shepherd. Both are loving, playful and great with kids...but the shepherd sheds big-time! Poodles are "cold water retrievers" - they love the water and make an excellent hunting companion too!! Highly recommended!! The downside? Because they do not shed they need to get "groomed" about once every 6 weeks or they look like teddy bears! LOL!! Great watchdog!! Another hint...the bigger the poodle? The less "yappy". Standards do not "yap". They only Bark when they sense danger and they are keen and fearless when they do!!
5 points - added 15 years ago by guest - 1 comment
Comments:
I'll second that, foo foo they are not even if the owner grooms their standard poodle to look like a pampered couch potato. Be forewarned, a standard is a very tough alpha dog that loves to get dirty, put it's nose to the ground and smell everything, retrieve a ball for a hour or two, be the fastest and most agile dog at the dog park and make it look effortless while other breeds are spending most of their time at the water bowl trying to cool off. Basically, a standard is an athlete that requires at minimum 1 hour twice if not three times a day running in a field to keep them from being bored. Also,a standard poodle has the intelligence to make up its own mind and has an air of arrogance to go with its childlike mannerism.

German Shepherd Dog Report Abuse
The German Shepherd is better then the Belgian Malinois, GSD is ranked 3rd most smartest, while the Mal isn't even in the top ten. GSD has an off switch, Mal doesn't, I wouldn't want to be around a crazy dog all the time. The problem is that they just are not big enough to be a serious threat to a man, if he is big. They cannot bring a lot of men down. You see them bringing these decoys down on video, but a lot of them are letting the dog win for show. When you let them look good, they can look great. The Mal is light, and the GSD is heavier, I've heard of a criminal picked a Mal up and throw one off a bridge. A GSD can beat a Mal in a one in one fight, all he needs to do is get his huge mouth on the Mals head with 450 bite power and it's over. For KNPV, most of the malinois are mixed with GSD. This is why so many of them have no papers (?). If they were not mixed, they just would not have enough size and weight. When a man is really formidable, and drunk or on drugs (and not feeling any pain), it's a tall order to really incapacitate him. I just think you need the advantage of size and mass, within reason. You also benefit from having a dog who is not in it for the chase and catch, but who will enjoy fighting a man. That rules a lot of dogs out as individuals. I also think Mal's are not that big of a dog. I saw some videos from them and yes when they get a head start and get speed they can hit you with a lot of force, but I know German shepherd is bigger and more stronger and can take a pretty big person down. From talking to different people in different departments I think budget is a factor and also ego. Yes mals are fast and they look good on a suit, but throw that toy over a cliff.... Lol, GSD are thinkers, Mals just have a lot of drive. A lot of the handlers that specifically requested mals are going back to shepherds. As police k-9s go, it has its benfits, You want the wrong people to feel more afraid.
