Ryan Leaf QB Report Abuse
This was a bust of epic proportions. First, the Chargers took Leaf over Peyton Manning, who would go on to have one of the greatest football careers ever. Then, Leaf came out his first season and played abysmally. To top it all off, when questioned about his poor play he almost attacked a San Diego Reporter. Good Times.

The Indianapolis Colts picked Peyton Manning with the FIRST pick in that draft. The Chargers picked Ryan Leaf with the SECOND pick.

Tony Mandarich OT Report Abuse
This guy wins the prize for largest gap between hype vs reality. Billed as a Can't Miss, Guaranteed, Absolute 100% Lock First Ballot Hall of Famer, the scouts were so blinded by his 600+ bench and massive frame they apparently didn't realize his footwork was terrible and he was too slow to block the pros. After a few years of not blocking anyone and riding the bench the Mandarich bandwagon was deserted.

Mandarich never benched 600 lbs.

Heath Shuler QB Report Abuse
In the mid 90s Heath Shuler was hand picked to be the new Troy Aikmen for Norv Turner's offense in Washington. How's that working out for you, Norv? Shuler stunk it up for three years, Norv was canned and Heath finally found success...far, far away from the football field as a Congressman for D.D.

Brian Bosworth LB Report Abuse
The hype was so huge surrounding this guy that people forget he had a pretty good rookie year before injuries and his own ego derailed his career. He makes it this high for the media circus that surrounded him before he ever played a down in the NFL. Hailed as the Second Coming, "The Boz" would burn out and be acting in bad "B: movies within five years of his NFL debut.

Archie Griffin RB Report Abuse
Some may argue its not fair to have Griffin this high up on the list. After all, he wasn't a terrible pro and put together a serviceable career. When you realize however, that he's only only two time Heisman Trophy Winner ever and one of the greatest collegiate players of all time you see why expectations were so high.
