A list of some of the Safest Airlines in the World (2009)

206 items ranked

One of the ways of assessing the safety record of an airline is by looking at the fatality rate of aircraft crashes. The following list below does not seek to recommend any airlines but just to show that they have no fatalities for any aircraft crashes between 1970 to present day.

I have no comment on the safety record. It speaks for itself...no accidents on record. But If you want to NOT be packed in like sardines...pay a different carrier.

The person above clearly knows nothing about how to work out how safe an airline is. Just because it has had more crashes doesn't mean it is less safe, you moron! You have to take into account the number of flights it has flown! For instance Emirates (which is at the top of the list) has flown 0.88 million flights since 1985. American Airlines 20.2 million since 1985, SO OBVIOUSLY IT WOULD BE INVOLVED IN MORE CRASHES!!!
Added 13 years ago by guest, 0 points Vote + to improve this comment's ranking Vote - to decrease this comment's ranking
Being involved in 9/11 with flights 11 and 77 has really brought to the table of how dangerous this airline is. Since the 1940s, American Airlines has been involved in, on average 7 accidents a decade. They have the most accidents of any other airliner and to make matters even more disturbing...most of those accidents have taken place between November 20, 2000 and December 22, 2009. I would not advise this airline as a safechoice. As a matter of fact, very few american airlines are what I would call "safe" to fly on.

I flew with them onece and would NEVER EVER go with them again! Because they are careless and unresponsive to customer's plight.Late last, year they "stole" my HP laptop when I visited USA boarded a US Airways flight from Washington to Atlanta and they said I cannot even make any claim since I do not reside permanently in the USA?

This airliner has several incidents on record and honestly isn't worth your money to fly on in the first place. It's like being cattle. Most of the time the attendants could care less. When it come to safety, what do you think they will do?

Have to agree with other posters. Westjet is not expensive. Have flown with them several times because they often have great seat sales (which you rarely see with Air Canada). Nothing super fancy with their planes either. Just newer gen. 737's with leather seats and TV's. Seating is very cramped though......

Not expensive and no more luxurious than others. I really think the first commenter has his airlines confused. Drove 700 km to fly with them instead of Air Canada, because they were so much cheaper.

Syrian air is doing very well despite the sanctions which are implemented from the U.S . as far as i know that they have a very well trained pilots and good technical engineeres . you arenot expecting a super service on board but at least you feel that you are welcomed and in safe hands. i tried Syrian air when i missed my flight on British Airways to London . since that time i use Syrian Air as my gate to the middle east. but unfortunatley i heared that syrian air is not able to buy new jets because of the unfaired sanctions which applied on civil aviation??? i wish the best for this company.

United Airlines should not be this high up in the rankings. It has a total of 19 crashes (including Flight 175 and 93). Although they have been incident free since 9/11, I would not fly with them, because their record states there are overdue.

did you forget about that crash that happeneed On 4 October 1992, the aircraft, a Boeing 747-258F, registration 4X-AXG, was traveling from New York to Tel Aviv and made a stopover at Schiphol. During the flight from New York to Schiphol, three issues were noted: fluctuations in the AUTOPILOTspeed regulation, problems with the shortwave radio, and fluctuations in the voltage of engine number three. so please dont sound like an idiot by saying that Elal pilots dont fly the plane through computers . and keep in mind that 39 people were killed on ground due to that crash and so many people are still suffering from the chemical weapons which were carried on board illegaly to kill civilian in the occupied palestine. schipol amesterdam

These accidents occurred decades ago, I wanted to remind you that American companies clashed on the Twin Towers in a cruel terrorist attack. El Al is the safest airline in the world, and the pilots there, unlike all other companies, fly the aircraft manually, not through the computer. Means that they, unlike the pilots of other companies, really know how to fly - and not just run on automatic pilot.
Added 13 years ago by guest, 0 points Vote + to improve this comment's ranking Vote - to decrease this comment's ranking
Two incidents on record; one of them hijacking and your saying that al the pilots are ex-IAF? Not to mention most of the people killed in El Al accidents were people on the ground and not in the plane. Now if only they could figure a way to prevent those fuse pins from colliding that would be great!

Best airline in the world IMO. Used to have problems with losing bags but since Terminal 5's introduction at Heathrow no problems now. I think given the sheer scale and demand on BA it's incredible the accidents they have had are so few and have ended up with very few deaths.

Nice airline and from what I've heard a very safe one too, what kept me away from it is their reputation (from what I've read on many discussion forums) of losing luggage. From all world's major carriers, they have (or used to have) the highest percentage of luggage loss. Is this still true or have they taken care of it ? It would be bad if they didn't, as the company is very good and they have good prices too

British airways is a very safe airline. It has had 6 crashes since 1970, and only on one of them everyone died. On most of the others everyone lived apart from "The Manchester Runway Disaster". But then most people survived. British Airways is a very safe and enjoyable airline.
