Tristan Und Isolde – Richard Wagner

Like much of Wagner's work it is musically complex, extremely long and utterly relentless. The final aria, the legendary, ecstatic 'Liebestod' represents one of the great harmonious payoffs in opera.
Not for beginners!

For me Verdi's greatest work. A flawless blend of music and drama. Unusually for the time it contains no overture. Instead Verdi throws his audience straight into the action with the tremendous storm fueled opening and Otello's triumphant entrance.

Puccini infuses his lush romanticism with a oriental flourish as Italian grand opera goes east. A perennial favourite.
