An excellent read, with a lovely and romantic ending. The author's inventions are inspired and interesting, well explained without being unnecessarily detailed.

Mortal Engines series - Phillip Reeve
Whilst not standard Steampunk, it deserves it's place in these sort of lists. By far one of the best of it's kind. And Municipal Darwinism is a genius idea.

Verne and Wells deserve to be recognized for their prototypical work in the genre. Twenty Thousand Leagues is a literary classic, a cultural phenomenon, and a progenitor of the steampunk genre.

Miéville is a significant talent in the steampunk genre. The world of The Scar (and of China's other novels) are vibrant and twisted and weird.

Without The Time Machine, we might not have Back to the Future. That's significant.
