The Empire Strikes Back
Okay, this is not to say that Star Wars isn't a good film. It's excellent. But Empire is ultimately more interesting because it takes us a step beyond the basic "hero's journey" that Luke Skywalker took in the first film, and takes us to a much more dark and complex place.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Not *exactly* a sequel, I know. However, the first two Harry Potter films were rather childish, relying on rather trite devices. How many times is Seamus going to have something explode in his face? C'mon. HPPA was the first film in the serious to really delve deeply into the world of wizardry, showing both the fun and the darkness of magic.

The Dark Knight
Not exactly a sequel, but this later installment in the Batman films is by far the best. Amazing performances and gripping action sequences. This is easily the best Batman film ever made.

While Toy Story is a great film, it was really Toy Story 2 that impressed us with amazing animation and effects.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Released seven years after the original film, this sequel blew the original away. Of course, this is partly due to all of the advances that were made in special effects in those seven years, but Terminator 2 is definitely the better film.

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Is it blasphemy to say that the first LOTR film was a bit ho-hum? I know fans everywhere will be upset by this, but really the first film seemed like it was merely setting the stage for the following films. In the Two Towers things begin to get serious, and we finally find ourselves in a truly engaging story.
