Geography Club, by Brent Hartinger Report Abuse
When the teens in this novel find out that they are not allowed to create a Gay-Straight alliance in their high school, they decide instead to create The Geography Club. The Geography Club is a secret club which they assume will sound so boring that it will not attract any unwanted members. Funny and fast-paced, there are also two sequels: The Order of the Poison Oak and Split Screen.

The Arizona Kid by Ron Koertege Report Abuse
Even though the main character of this story isn't gay, I think this is an excellent book for gay teens to show them that there are plenty of happy well-adjusted gay adults out there. In this story, a teenage boy spends the summer living with his gay uncle in Arizona while working at a horse ranch. The uncle’s story is only a subplot, but he is extremely likable and this story could be very helpful to teens who do not have any positive gay role models in their life.

Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan Report Abuse
While it isn't the first gay YA novel, it is certainly one of the most ground-breaking. This sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-breaking story takes place in a "gaytopia" where everyone in the high school is accepting of homosexuality. Butch lesbian bikers cheer on the football team, and the gay straight alliance teaches the straight kids how to dance to the 80s pop that is played every morning instead of the Pledge of Allegiance.

This is a great novel whose main character stands up not only for the rights of gays in his school, but also to put an end to bullying in general.
