The dam was built to survive 1-in-1,000-year flood, but during the super typhoon Nina, it couldn't resists because of the heavy rainfall and cold front, which were brought by typhoon Nina. This flood killed around 231,000 people.

The flood began on Saturday 5 November 1530, which was the name day of St. Felix. That day is also known as the Evil Saturday. More than 100,000 people died during the flood.
