Sherlock Holmes Report Abuse
The obvious first choice, Holmes is the most iconic fictional detective ever created and one of the most interesting. His genius is legendary and he has become such a part of western culture that some people are tricked into thinking he really existed.

Comments:
I only say Holmes should be behind Batman because he (Holmes) admits to not desiring to know more than what is useful (such as the fact that the earth revolves around the sun or literature, astronomy, or philosophy, etc.) due to a brain's limited capacity. Please look it up. Batman would not have such limitations and has (in various media from comics, to animation, to movies) studied a multitude of diciplines both acedemically and physically/martial arts ranging from literature, astrology, physics, various theoretical essays (on technology, human mind, and even aliens) and a longer list of martial arts than Holmes.

Batman Report Abuse
Casual fans may call foul, thinking he's a superhero but Batman has no super powers and originally appeared in Detective Comics. Above all else, Batman is a crime fighter, using detective skills to hunt down and apprehend criminals. Batman attained success largely due to his brilliant mind and is considered the greatest detective in the DC Universe.

L (from the manga Death Note) Report Abuse
57 points - added 3 years ago by pxc0 - 1 comment
Comments:
One of the world's greatest detectives, L was the first detective in the Death Note series to investigate and try to apprehend Kira. L would not have died if it hadn't been for the the other members of the investigation, which would have thought him to be ridiculous for accusing Light a second time(for becoming Kira again), after catching Higuchi as Kira.

Lovable but cunning. Pretends to be inept which is but a cover for his excellent powers of observation and deductive reasoning. Looks like he has not changed clothes in a couple of days. Show was known for lack of graphic violence.

Feluda needs no introduction in the world of crime, suspense and thriller. Undoubtedly one of the best creation of the Oscar winner, internationally renowned film maker and author - Satyajit Ray. Feluda's skills lie in his intelligence, superb observation skills and his unmatched qualities of solving mysteries which makes him stand out from the others.

Okay, so he's not the prototypical detective. He blunders about until the clues fall out, but his charisma, and character, as well as wit, and well known humility (heh) should at least get him on this list.
