The obvious first choice, Holmes is the most iconic fictional detective ever created and one of the most interesting. His genius is legendary and he has become such a part of western culture that some people are tricked into thinking he really existed.
Comments:
I only say Holmes should be behind Batman because he (Holmes) admits to not desiring to know more than what is useful (such as the fact that the earth revolves around the sun or literature, astronomy, or philosophy, etc.) due to a brain's limited capacity. Please look it up. Batman would not have such limitations and has (in various media from comics, to animation, to movies) studied a multitude of diciplines both acedemically and physically/martial arts ranging from literature, astrology, physics, various theoretical essays (on technology, human mind, and even aliens) and a longer list of martial arts than Holmes.

Casual fans may call foul, thinking he's a superhero but Batman has no super powers and originally appeared in Detective Comics. One of the world's greatest detectives, L was the first detective in the Death Note series to investigate and try to apprehend Kira. L would not have died if it hadn't been for the the other members of the investigation, which would have thought him to be ridiculous for accusing Light a second time(for becoming Kira again), after catching Higuchi as Kira.
