The obvious first choice, Holmes is the most iconic fictional detective ever created and one of the most interesting. His genius is legendary and he has become such a part of western culture that some people are tricked into thinking he really existed.
Comments:
I can appreciate the appeal Batman has, but I would also challenge readers over his validity as truly equaling let alone surpassing Holmes. Yes, Holmes subscribed to focusing only on information that he found relevant to his profession, that of personal consultant. What is Batman's job? Vigilante. Yes, he did first appear in Detective Comics, but is it slething or the latest gadgets that Batman uses to solve his crime? Batman appears generations after the science invented by the Victorians has taken hold as serious investigative technique. In the age of CSI popularity, I would propose Batman owes much of his deductive strategies and habits of using science to the methods pioneered by the venerable Holmes. And, for the record, Holmes did not study more than one martial art because he did not need more than that to do his job.
I only say Holmes should be behind Batman because he (Holmes) admits to not desiring to know more than what is useful (such as the fact that the earth revolves around the sun or literature, astronomy, or philosophy, etc.) due to a brain's limited capacity. Please look it up. Batman would not have such limitations and has (in various media from comics, to animation, to movies) studied a multitude of diciplines both acedemically and physically/martial arts ranging from literature, astrology, physics, various theoretical essays (on technology, human mind, and even aliens) and a longer list of martial arts than Holmes.

L is the worlds best detective and his intuition is almost scary. He even uses two aliases which are said to be the worlds 2nd and 3rd best detectives. L Lawliet was the only Detective wothy enough to be Light Yagamis (Kiras) opponent. L always thought that Light was Kira even when everyone else thought he was innocent. He is not scared of death and was such a genius that orphans were raised only to find someone worthy enough to be his successor. Near inst half as good as L, Near only won against Kira because Mikami (Kiras assistant) made a huge mistake.
But did he really solve any crimes or just spend the whole time hungint for Light?
One of the world's greatest detectives, L was the first detective in the Death Note series to investigate and try to apprehend Kira. L would not have died if it hadn't been for the the other members of the investigation, which would have thought him to be ridiculous for accusing Light a second time(for becoming Kira again), after catching Higuchi as Kira.

Casual fans may call foul, thinking he's a superhero but Batman has no super powers and originally appeared in Detective Comics. Above all else, Batman is a crime fighter, using detective skills to hunt down and apprehend criminals. Batman attained success largely due to his brilliant mind and is considered the greatest detective in the DC Universe.
