Goodbye to Romance (Randy Rhoads) Report Abuse
Crazy Train and Crowley are superb, but this is Rhoads' best solo work. And in a ballad!

Eruption (Eddie Van Halen) Report Abuse
This is the songless solo that prompted a generation to pick up guitars, and quite a few players to put theirs down.

Under a Glass Moon (Dream Theater) Report Abuse
Can anyone really argue that John Petrucci is one of the single most talented guitarists out there? This is some of his best work in this song. (The whole song is even better put together.)

Comfortably Numb (David Gilmour) Report Abuse
Tone. Tone. Tone. Gilmour mastered the smoothest hard rock tone of them all. Fairly criticized for being a bit mechanical, Gilmour nonetheless wrote solos that fit the song to perfection. The harmonic that begins the second solo is the single greatest note in the history of lead guitar.

Sultans of Swing (Mark Knopfler) Report Abuse
This is what it would sound like if Chet Atkins played modern rock and roll. Flawless execution. The outro solos are phenomenal, but the solo work within the verses is inspired.

Hotel California (Felder and Walsh) Report Abuse
Walsh took The Eagles to greater heights, but Felder was as accomplished as any other player of his time. Together they created one of rock's most memorable solos.
