During much of the 20th century, giant ocean liners plied the Atlantic Ocean between Europe and New York. Some of these great liners still existed while some can only be seen in old photos while others rest peacefully on the ocean floor. A distinction should be drawn between ocean liner and cruise liner. Cruise liners are meant for entertainment and calm seas while ocean liners are built to ferry passengers across the rough Atlantic Ocean.

proabably the best looking steamship before world war 1. also hte most popular ship in the 1920's.

RMS Queen Mary I (1934)
The first Queen Mary was intended to bring back the British glory on the seas serve as a replacement for the aging Mauritania and Aquitania. Today, the Queen Mary is in Long Beach, California as a hotel and tourist attraction.

SS United States (1952)
The SS United States, built with both passenger service and military use in mind, was so fast that her top speed was considered a state secret. The last of the old Atlantic Ocean greyhounds, she is slowly rusting at a Philadelphia pier today. She was built with both passenger service and military use in mind—many liners scrapped in the mid-1930s Today she still holds the title to westbound Blue Riband.

RMS Mauretania (1906)
The Steam turbines powered Mauretania was regarded as the first Atlantic Ocean greyhound. This mighty and luxurious ship remained a favorite for three decades holding the Blue Riband for 20 years before the Breman captured it.

RMS Queen Mary II (2003)
Queen Mary II is currently the largest Atlantic Ocean liner ever built (Note: the Freedom of the Seas, a Caribbean cruise ship, is a larger ship.)

HMHS Britannic (1914)
The sister ship of RMS Olympic and RMS Titanic, and was launched on the eve on the First World War and entered service as a hospital ship. She sank in the Aegean in 1916 after hitting a mine and is regarded as the largest ocean liner on the sea bed.

SS Rex (1932)
The pride of the post-WWI Italian fleet, the Rex and her sister ship, the Conte de Savoia of the post-WWI Italian fleet, were Italy’s answer to Germany’s new greyhounds. Rex won the Blue Riband in 1933 and held it for 2 years. She was sunk in September 1944 to prevent the Germans from using her to block the harbor at Trieste.

The Rotterdam was the perfect cruise ship/ocean liner and a trendsetter. The Rotterdam was a Holland America Line ship from 1959-1997. She is preserved in Rotterdam as a hotel/museum.
