Although written three decades after the first foundation novel, this novel went to win the Hugo and Nebula award for best novel. It was also Isaac Asimov first novel to make it to the New York Times Best Seller list.

The novel is a detective story laced with science fiction. Isaac Asimov wrote this novel to demonstrate that science fiction can go well with any literary genre.
