Ma Rainey was a great influence on American blues, pop and rock. She began recording in 1923 and her versions of "Bo-Weevil Blues," "Black Bottom," "Soon This Morning," and especially "See See Rider Blues," also known as "See See Rider," "C.C. Rider" and "Easy Rider," became templates for succeeding blues singers, including Bessie Smith and much later, Janis Joplin. She was known for her powerful voice, immaculate phrasing and a "moaning" vocal style that made her voice unmistakable. She became known as the Mother of the Blues. She has been inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and her version of "See See Rider Blues" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
