Madonna has a great voice no doubt, but many of his hugely successful songs were written by herself and then adapted to his vocal chords. So she is a good singer but a mediocre vocalist.

One of the Most Talented Showgirls of The Entertainment History. Always Bright, Charming, Dazzling, Warm and Energetic. She sings as the expression of her versatility on her unprecedented live stage shows. Frankly, it's not suitable to put her name on this Singer's list. She deserves to be No:1 on the Female Entertainer list.

Connee Boswell Report Abuse
Connee (also billed as Connie) Boswell was an influential pop and jazz singer from the 1920s to through the mid-1950s. She first became known as one-third of the close-harmony group The Boswell Sisters with her siblings Martha and Helvetia (Vet). Later, she embarked on a solo career and was a frequent duet partner with Bing Crosby. Her hits included "Say It Isn't So," "Moon Over Miami," "Moonlight Mood" and "If I Give My Heart to You." Ella Fitzgerald gives Boswell credit for having influenced her singing style, which, because Fitzgerald was such a huge influence on so many female singers, means that Boswell also had a great impact on 20th Century singers.

Ma Rainey Report Abuse
Ma Rainey was a great influence on American blues, pop and rock. She began recording in 1923 and her versions of "Bo-Weevil Blues," "Black Bottom," "Soon This Morning," and especially "See See Rider Blues," also known as "See See Rider," "C.C. Rider" and "Easy Rider," became templates for succeeding blues singers, including Bessie Smith and much later, Janis Joplin. She was known for her powerful voice, immaculate phrasing and a "moaning" vocal style that made her voice unmistakable. She became known as the Mother of the Blues. She has been inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and her version of "See See Rider Blues" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The National Recording Preservation Board of the Library of Congress included that version into its National Recording Registry. The U.S. Postal Service honored her with a commemorative stamp.

Pearl Bailey Report Abuse
Pearl Bailey had a distinguished career in nightclubs, records, movies, TV and the stage. She was known for her comedic take on songs, which sometimes overshadowed her great talent as a powerful singer. On Broadway, she appeared in several movie musicals, including "St. Louis Blues," "Porgy and Bess" and "Carmen Jones." On Broadway, she appeared in "House of Flowers," and later starred in an all-black version of "Hello, Dolly," for which she was given a special Tony award. She had one top-10 hit in 1952, "Takes Two to Tango." She appeared regularly as a guest on TV variety shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show."

She starred in movie musicals and scored several hits on the Billboard charts. In 1951, she was nominated for an Oscar for best actress for playing the lead role, Annie Oakley, in the musical "Annie Get Your Gun." On records, she is best known for "It Had to Be You," which became one of the major songs of the 1940s, and the swing novelty song, "Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief," which went to No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 1946.

Comments:
Irma Thomas is a contemporary of Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross and other big-time R&B and blues singers who were able to cross over to mainstream pop, but she never achieved their success. She is highly regarded and has had a bit of an impact on the charts. "(You Can Have My Husband but) Don't Mess with My Man," her first single in 1960, peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard R&B charts. Several other singles appeared on Billboard's Top 100 charts, the most successful of which was "Wish Someone Would Care" / "Break-a-Way," which went to No. 17. She introduced "Time Is On My Side," which the Rolling Stones later made into a big hit. She has been nominated for a Grammy for her albums, "Live! Simply the Best" and "Sing It!" She lives in New Orleans and continues to perform. She has been inducted into the Louisiana Hall of Fame for her contributions to Louisiana music.

Kim Carnes, a singer-songwriter, is best known as the raspy-voiced singer of the enormous hit record, "Bette Davis Eyes," which spent nine weeks at No.1 on the Billboard charts, peaked at No. 1 in 21 countries, was the No. 1 song of 1981 in the U.S. and won Grammys for Song of the Year and Record of the year. Billboard ranked "Bette Davis Eyes" No. 12 among the top 100 songs of the first 50 years of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also ranked the record as the No. 1 song of the 1980s. Carnes had several other top 40 singles, but none that came close to her success with "Bette Davis Eyes." These included "More Love" (No. 10), a dance remake of the Motown hit by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles; "Draw of the Cards" (No. 28), "Voyeur" (No. 29), "Does It Make You Remember" (No. 36), "Invisible Hands" (No. 40), for which she was nominated for a Grammy, and "Crazy in the Night (Barking at Airplanes)" (No. 15). She also had hits in duets with other performers, including Barbra Streisand, Kenny Rogers, Gene Cotton and Randy Meisner.

is an Italian singer-songwriter, performing under the mononym Elisa. She is one of few Italian musicians to write and record mainly in English. She draws inspiration from many genres such as pop, alternative rock] electronica and trip hop. In Europe she is perhaps most recognised for the single Come Speak to Me, while American audiences may recognise the song Dancing as featured in both the 2006 and 2007 seasons of So You Think You Can Dance

Out of fairness to all singers on this list, what were Elisa's accomplishements, and for how many years was she a recognized singer, in the 20th Century? The dates mentioned, 2006 and 2007, are not in the 20th Century. She is probably an outstanding singer, but is this the correct list for her???

Voice of the 21st century... I love Amy Winehouse due to her wonderful Jazz tone and her perfect pitch and diction, her powerful vocal runs, riffs and an amazing vocal technique... But The title of this list clearly states "Top female singers of the 20th Century" So really she nor Adele should be on this list... And If people think Adele is the best voice of our generation than they really and truly need to listen to different genres of music, because there are a lot better singers out there!

Guys, please check out the grammy history, you will see that most of the winners are forgotten within a couple of years, winning grammy, or being nominated for it, proves nothing. Björk is one oft the most creative and influential singers in the music history, it seems impossible to deny that.

idk who Lara Fabian is, but I DO know who P!nk is and her voice, songwriting, singing, acrobatics, etc. is definitely a power to be recognized @ 119. I believe the criteria is based on SINGING. P!nk began in tough Philly clubs at the age of 15, making it on her own. That speaks volumes to me that she had such passion to overcome her barricades and proved her voice is worth listening to as well as the Messages included!

She's being judged way too harshly because of who her father was. Nancy Sinatra is a beautiful singer, and no, "Boots" was not her only song. Underrated as a vocalist. Listen to her recording of Ave Maria before you judge. It's flawless.

Or, as we all know her just Melanie. Alas, all her friends got on why shouldn't she? Just her and her guitar could fill the hall, and she didn't even need a PA! Wrote her own stuff too. Great talent. Still around too. Check her out!

Sublime voice, powerful and moving performances (plus a brilliant lyricist and composer), it's unbelievable she'outside the top 10 let alone outside the top 100. Which she is. BTW: who's the singer at #1?

Loreena McKennitt is the greatest female voice of the list and of course one of the greatest voices. Her dramatic soprano voice is powerful, emotional with excellent quality. She is also very talented composer and musician.

This is not the pop artist Patty Smith. This is the bravest artist on this list. The most prolific poet on this list. She is a w*h*o*r*e, a n*i*g*g*e*r, a princess, a queen, a little girl, an angel rolling in the gutter. I respect your voice, your message, your music. She should be at the top of this list.

Avril has a different style than other female singers, she's herself and very down to earth. She has the best songs of all time including complicated,sk8ter boi,I'm with you,my happy ending, don't tell me,and girlfriend. She has also received an uncountable amount of rewards and top hit singles other than being able to play the piano, drums, guitar, and produce of all of her songs unlike many artists.

Ok, if you read what's written above, you will see that the person who odd her didn't write nothing about her voice, just about her songs, that she produces, writes, or anything else. So, what the are you talking about? The songs? Or the singer?

She definitely is an amazing talent in the lyrics and music department. For raw vocal talent I wouldn't rank her too high. She's a good singer, but not an amazing take your breath away singer vocally.

One of the best female singer-songwriters to come out of the alternative rock movement of the 90s. Her lyrics often read like free-verse poetry, very clever and complex.
