Dr C W W Kannangara founded free education in Sri Lanka by bringing an act of parliament in the year 1944 resulting the freedom of education for all walks of life including the children of poorest of the poor, remotest of the rural villages. Until 1944 the education beyond first 8 years of school was a priviledge only to the students who can pay for their education all the way up to obtaining a University degree. After introduction of free education act in Sri Lanka the number of students graduating from high schools and from Universities has consistently been increasing over the past 65 years or so. A large numbers graduating from Sri Lankan Universities not only served Sri Lanka but also contributed increasingly towards the growth of the developed countries such as USA, Canada, Australia, UK, Germany, Japan, and of many other developing countries. This single most important act helped maintain not only the literacy rate but also the continuous flow of brilliant minds to work in the Global environment contributing to the development of the World at large. As the numbers increase with years to come the positive impact of this far sighted act of Dr C W W Kannangara will become increasingly visible.
