Adam Smith Report Abuse
Economist, Wealth of Nations is a classic equal in status to Arthashastra of Kautilya.
2533 points - added 15 years ago by guest - 2 comments
Comments:
(The qualifier that Wealth of Nations is 'equal in status to the Arthashastra', strikes me as somewhat hilarious. Almost as if someone were to praise Paradise Lost as being 'at least as good as Harry Potter') Worth noting that Smith didn't consider himself an economist (the term didn't exist) but rather a moral philosopher, and if you don't read his Theory of Moral Sentiments alongside An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations you're apt to profoundly misunderstand the latter (as, for example, Ayn Rand did). The man was a thoroughgoing liberal and was concerned about the education and well-being of the working classes before Marx or Engels were even born.

Why did Nietzsche waste his time and resources wnehn he examined how christianity and other religions impede on the progress of a society and are a huge waste of resources? He was very influentious, because he influenced very much Hitler and the Nazis.

Simon Bolivar Report Abuse
Charismatic Leader, led South America to independence from 400 years of foreign rule.nown as The Liberator the country Bolivia is named after him.Between 1819 to 1822 , Bolivar won a series of cictories against Spain getting Colombia and Venezula getting confirmation of independence. In 1822 his general Antonio Jose de Sucre got Ecuador's independence. Two years later Bolivar made a deal with Argentinian liberator Jose de San Martin who was active in Peru. As a result Sucre defeated the Spanish at Ayacuho bringing independence to Peru.Soth American nations suffered successive military rulers and leftist liberation groups became active. The worst sufferers were the indigenous people who had lost control to white settlers from foreign lands and there was massive decimation of entire civilizations and cultures. Finally new age democracy notions arrived and by 1960's were being heard.By 1987 there was revival in the lost civilizations and Cultures and Peru became the focal point of New Age Movement.

Nelson Mandela Report Abuse
Fought against racial discrimination
1519 points - added 15 years ago by lance.bensch - 3 comments
Comments:
I'm a great admirer of Mandela, but the question isn't how admirable they are it's how influential they are. He was the figurehead of a movement (which would have existed without him) to end deplorable repression in moderately sized country. He shaped the evolution of the country in so far as he was a voice for racial unity and moderation after the end of apartheid. Those positive trends he inaugurated are now reversing through the ANC of Jacob Zuma, and his contribution to the end of apartheid itself was more symbolic compared to the practical impact of Thabo Mbeki's diplomatic efforts to achieve trade sanctions on the apartheid government. He is a man to be honoured and admired, but his historical influence is dwarfed compared to the likes of Kemal Attaturk or Gandhi or Simon Bolivar or any world historical figure who was more individually influential.

Pythagoras Report Abuse
Greek philosopher, developed Babylonian notions into what is known as Pythagoras theorem.
1513 points - added 15 years ago by lance.bensch - 2 comments
Comments:
Yeah but he did popularize the notion of an immortal soul which is still extremely prevalent today. He also grasped the idea that the universe can be figured out through mathematics. These two topics themselves are undoubtedly influential to humanity. Furthermore, his philosophy was extremely influential on Plato, and through him, all of western philosophy. And the Pythagorean lifestyle of vegetarianism is also very prevalent in contemporary society. This man is one of the most influential figures of all time in my book.

Created a system of viewing the Universe that formed the foundation to all cosmological understanding for roughly 1500 years. Established the Earth as the center of the universe, with all of the planets (including the moon and sun) orbiting it. Developed the ideas of Epicycles, Equants, and Deferents in order to more accurately account for the observed celestial phenomenon - tools which remained in use even by Copernicus, whose heliocentric model of the universe still relied on the ideas developed by Ptolemy around 100AD.

He received more money from wall street than any politician in the past 20 years by a sunlight foundation study. He could have had the whole birth certificate thing resolved the first day if he just handed the paper to the FBI, but no.. Why not? Philip J Berg ,Democrat even sued him on this. Jābir ibn Hayyān Report Abuse
Abu Musa Jābir ibn Hayyān (Arabic: جابر بن حيان‎), (Persian: جابر بن حيان) (born c. 721 in Tous–died c. 815 in Kufa)[2] was a prominent polymath: a chemist and alchemist, astronomer and astrologer, engineer, geologist, philosopher, physicist, and pharmacist and physician. He is considered by some to be the "father of chemistry." Born and educated in Tus, located in Iran's Persian heartland of Khorasan, he later traveled to Kufa. His ethnic background have been under debate. While mentioned as being of Persian ethnicity, other sources state that he was an Arab from Azd. Jābir is held to be the first practical alchemist.

Ibn al-Haythem made significant improvements in optics, physical science, and the scientific method. Ibn al-Haytham's work on optics is credited with contributing a new emphasis on experiment. His influence on physical sciences in general, and on optics in particular, has been held in high esteem and, in fact, ushered in a new era in optical research, both in theory and practice.

Ghazali Report Abuse
Abu Hāmed Mohammad ibn Mohammad al-Ghazzālī (1058 – 1111) (Persian: ابو حامد محمد ابن محمد الغزالی), known as Algazel to the western medieval world, born and died in Tus, in the Khorasan province of Persia (modern day Iran) was a Persian Muslim theologian, jurist, philosopher, and mystic. Ghazali has sometimes been referred to by historians as the single most influential Muslim after the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Besides his work that successfully changed the course of Islamic philosophy—the early Islamic Neoplatonism developed on the grounds of Hellenistic philosophy, for example, was so successfully refuted by Ghazali that it never recovered—he also brought the orthodox Islam of his time in close contact with Sufism. The orthodox theologians still went their own way, and so did the mystics, but both developed a sense of mutual appreciation which ensured that no sweeping condemnation could be made by one for the practices of the other.
