Comments:
To play lead trumpet with Benny Goodman's orchestra, one of the greatest bands during the swing era, then to take lead trumpet with Tommy Dorsey, he had to be one of the best. Just listen - he was subtle, melodious and played from the heart ... and nobody else could bend a note like that.

I agree with the Herb Alpert comments, and that is why Harry James must be in the top five. His technical ability on the instrument was astonishing, but surpassed by the likes of Mendez, Sandoval and Andre. He was no doubt the most popular of them all - starring in movies, married to Betty Grable, a host of #1 songs, similar to Herb Albert in the latter. He had longevity and changed with the times; first recording in 1936 and into the 1970's, from 39 forward he employed a big band and kept many families fed. His recorded output is enormous and has small group, trio work, be-bop work, classical, popular, swing etc. Also, why has noone mentioned Blue Mitchell, Buck Clayton, Red Allen or Sweets Edison. Are you people biased against the great swing trumpet men?
Comments:
What an odd thing, to take up almost the entire post arguing for Harry James' placement to be higher and only give Red Allen a passing mention on Red Allen's segment.
Henry "Red" Allen played with King Oliver in the '20s, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, and lots of others before forming his own group, touring with them throughout the 40's and 50's and continuing to record with his friends in the biz into the mid-60's. Great all-around jazz player with a Louis Armstrong derived sound merged with an avant-garde attitude.
