Located in the United Kingdom between Devon and Cornwall, crossing over the river Tamar in a town called Saltash, not far from Plymouth. It is part of the existing Great Western main line between Penzance and the west London terminus of Paddington.

The railway bridge starts from the current Blackfriars (formerly St Paul's named after the nearby cathedral) station over the river Thames, passing the original site of the station, south of the river and beyond. The road bridge next to the railway line has a plague (London, Chatham and Dover Railway, later South Eastern Railway) marking the original station before it was closed and resited to the current station on the north bank of the Thames.
