Rather than staging an already popular film, Spring Awakening took a German text from 1890 and made it popular. That alone is an achievement, not to mention the score (or Lea Michele...)

Didn't win the Tony in 2004, but won our hearts and is STILL bringing in over a million dollars a week. With an original cast that includes Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, Norbert Leo Butz, and Joel Grey, this musical had us defying gravity the entire decade.
