#1 on the US Billboard Charts in 1985, it won 2 Grammys in 1986.
The theme plus all the instrumental music from the first few seasons was composed by and played by Jan Hammer, completely by himself. It was all mechanically produced and a scientific breakthrough in its day. The drums were completely synthetic, except for Mr. Hammer's input.

“Making your way in the world today takes everything you got/ Takin’ a break from all your worries sure would help a lot; Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name/ and they’re always glad you came” and it was sung by a man with the sweetest and earnest of voices. I loved the show, but I actually loved the theme song more, and it has endured as one of those refrains that you hear from time to time and it always makes you feel a little better, this idea of going somewhere for even the briefest of escapes, where you're known and welcomed.

A whistled tune, immortalized and recognized by most anyone, including those who didn’t grow up with it. We’ve all heard it; we all know it; we’ve probably found ourselves whistling it, then even gotten irritated that we couldn’t stop, but more than all this, it makes all feel good.

“Shlamille, Shlamozle, Hatz and Bher Incorporated… We’re gonna make it…. We’ll do it our way, yes our way… make all our dreams come true… for me and you” the show was a battle cry for single women before they found their collective voice, and the opening theme song remains timeless, perhaps more so than the show itself.

“So no one told you life was gonna be this way/
Your job’s a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s DOA/
It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear/
When it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year, but…/
I’ll be there for you… Cause you're there for me too…” An upbeat tune sung by the Rembrandts, it embodied the show and an ideal that we all need to know is there for us: that we’re not alone in this sometimes ferocious world.

Edith and Archie belting this out seated at their piano, it always put a smile on your face – a warm up of the 30 minutes yet to come. “…Those were the days”

Charles in charge of our days and our nights. Charles in charge of our wrongs and our rights. And I sing, I want, I want Charles in Charge of me.
