Easy to care for, docile, can keep one well in a 10 gallon aquarium. Probably THE BEST reptile to keep as a first pet.

Steppe Runner
These lizards are not very skittish, and they can live in a 10-15 gallon tank. Steppe runners are great lizards, even for kids. You can hold them as often as you want, and they are very loving and won't bite you.

Easy to handle, some seem to enjoy "cuddling" with people. Just be sure to get one that is captive bred! Wild caught ball pythons are not as docile and often have parasites.
