Jan Sokol of Lamberk, so called Wild Falcon, 1355-1410 Report Abuse
An important military commander of 14th century Bohemia. He was one of key commanders in battle of Grunwald and master (military teacher) of young Jan Žižka. "sokol" means "falcon" in czech, his nickname was Wild Falcon.

Actually it was him and his troops who decided battle of Grunwald. He was later poisoned by polish nobles because they were jealous of his influence on Polish king. He was his best friend.

braxton bragg Report Abuse
18 points - added 11 years ago by banna32 - 2 comments
Comments:
Bragg was not a great general or even a good one but he gets way too much criticism. Who did better in the West for the CSA? Pemberton? Holmes? Kirby Smith? Hood? Beauregard? AS Johnston who lost most of Kentucky and west Tennessee? Van Dorn? Longstreet who botched east Tennessee? Zollicoffer? Joe Johnston who abandoned Pemberton and kept falling back against Sherman? Polk? Floyd? Buckner? Hardee? Bragg was average at best but it's not like his fellow Confederates out West were much better and most would have been even worse.

Bragg gets a lot of flack from Confederate fans but he is nowhere near as bad a general as often portrayed. He was no Hood to be sure and kept his army in the field for more than a year. Having said that, he is nowhere near a great general.

Teddy Roosevelt never made it pass the rank of colonel. Although very good president, he was not a career military man.

David IV ( The builder ) Of Georgia Report Abuse
Muslim powers became increasingly concerned about the rapid rise of a Christian state in southern Caucasia. In 1121, Sultan Mahmud b. Muhammad (1118–1131) declared a holy war on Georgia and rallied a large coalition of Muslim states led by the Artuqid Najm al-din El-ğazi and Toğrul b. Muhammad. The size of the Muslim army is still a matter of debate with numbers ranging from fantastic 600,000 men (Walter the Chancellor’s Bella Antiochena, Matthew of Edessa) to 400,000 (Smbat Sparapet’s Chronicle) to modern Georgian estimates of 250,000–400,000 men. All sources agree that the Muslim powers gathered an army that was far much larger than the Georgian force of 56,000 men. However, 12 August 1121, King David routed the enemy army on the fields of Didgori, achieving what is often considered the greatest military success in Georgian history. The victory at Didgori signaled the emergence of Georgia as a great military power and shifted the regional balance in favor of Georgian cultural and political supremacy.

James Graham, the 1st Marquess of Montrose Report Abuse
I believe this general was overlooked. He fought for the Royalist cause,Charles the 1st,in the 17th century against the Covanenteers in Scotland. He too, brought an army through the mountains,Ben Nevis,in Scotland. This was the battle of Inverlochy. He had Alasdair MacColla,an Irish soldier and his troops during most of the campaigns. His battles, tactics etc are studied by many soldiers to this day.....considered by many,a genius!

Nathan Bedford Forrest Report Abuse
13 points - added 14 years ago by tboneya - 2 comments
Comments:
Forrest was a fighter--but he often failed in his duties of keeping his eye on the enemy. He left Hood blind at Spring Hill and John Schofield and the union troops slipped off. Hood found them a few days later at Franklin--the worst Confederate defeat of the war. Forrest should shoulder some of the blame for letting Schofield slip off and join Thomas.

During the war he was one of the best tactical leaders, North or South. But his involvement with the KKK after the war has to take away points!

John Joseph Wenceslaus, Count Radetzky of Radetz Report Abuse
Famous Bohemian general Radetzky was in the military for over 70 years, until 90, almost up to his death at age 91. In 1813 he was Schwarzenberg's chief of staff and had considerable influence on the councils of the Allied sovereigns and generals. Langenau, the quartermaster-general of the Grand Army, found him an indispensable assistant, and he had a considerable share in planning the Leipzig campaign Radetzky famous hour came much later: He is known for the victories at the Battles of Custoza (July 24–25, 1848) and Novara (March 23, 1849) during the First Italian War of Independence. He is immortalised by Johann Strauss I's Radetzky March

Sir John Monash Report Abuse
General Sir John Monash, the great Australian soldier and engineer, a true leader of men, could be in the top 10 of this entire list just for his role in the Battle of Halem alone, the first battle to unite infantry, artillery, tanks and airplanes in a single objective (which Monash predicted would take 90 minutes - it took 93). But he then astonished the world by a remarkable string on victories at the head of the Australian Corps on the Western Front throughout 1918, including breaking the Hindenburg line, leading to Armistice. Monash emerged in the estimation of his colleagues as the single greatest general of WW 1. King George V was so impressed that he knighted Monash personally on the battlefield. (Halem was the first ever battle fought by US troops under foreign command; and Monash basically taught the Americans how to fight and win in Europe.) Monash single-handedly transitioned warfare to the 20th century through emphasis on meticulous planning, understanding the psychology of one's own soldiers, and the achievement of victory at the minimum human cost.
