This is the first movie i saw with a lot of action, I LOVE IT!!
To be fair to 300, it did inspire LOADS of people to read up about Spartans. It was meant to be the Battle of Thermopylae, THROUGH the eyes of the Spartans, not through history. It was an inspiring film, that publicised a crucial moment in history.
Don't know why everyone is banging on about historical inaccuracies, pretty sure the the Director wasn't going for accuracy (see goat headed Persian). You clearly didn't get the film, and if you're looking for historical accuracy, or even a depiction of reality- watch a documentary!! Not a film made for entertainment purposes :)
Drivel unless you have a comic book mind, repetitive and dull..very inaccurate full of one dimensional characters and stereotypes.
Inaccurate and cliched, but what can you expect from a comic book adaptation. Good fare for teen or young males.
I don't know what everybody is bitching about. 300 is one of the BEST movie I've ever seen
I have no idea why this is number 1... There are much better movies than this.
Just for them kids who are like wow this is just awesome. If you look it at the way sure, but in no way is it better then Gladiator, even though I liked 300 better.

I am so sick of every movie about rome being about gladiators. Seriously it was such a small part of such a rich history...
Not to mention there are no movies about Rome during it's republic days. I didn't hate this movie but was disappointed by it
During the reign of Marcus Aurelius, one of his best generals was called Marcus Valerius Maximianus who was victorious against the marcomanni. Perhaps his name was shortened by the legionaries. That part about his killing Commodus was not true though.
Except it is a complete travesty as far as historical accuracy is concerned. I couldn't take it seriously after the first scene where Maximus is riding with STIRRUPS. This is basic historical knowledge and the fact they couldn't be bothered with a proper roman saddle (which you can simply buy if you want) and the fairly trivial effort to learn to ride with a Roman saddle (they are more intuitive for the rider than stirrups) tells you a lot about their faith in accuracy.
Totally off base, but gives the flavor of the times to some degree. Magnificent, but brief performances by Richard Harris and Oliver Redd - both gone now.
how is this the best when the protagonist is completely fictional, maximus didn't exist, so he couldn't have killed commodus,
not completely accurate my friend, the gladitorial games went on in a different manner then that shown in the film
Excellent & accurate.a portrayal of.a.time-,,piece as Hollywood gets.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! It has a great plot, and a great score (Soundtrack).

An adaptation of Homer's great epic, the film follows the assault on Troy by the united Greek forces and chronicles the fates of the men involved.
Comments:
You know they at least read one line from the Iliad. The comment Achilles made to Hector about there not being pacts between lions and men is from the book; not exactly, but close.
A very modern interpretation of an ancient epic.
A lot of the Greek mythology was completely overlooked, and the gods are not depicted as nearly as magestic and powerful as they were depicted by Homer. I think that's were it loses a lot of it's flavor.
I also didn't like the fact that many modern frases are used in dialogue, which no one would ever be say in ancient Greece.

Based on the life of Hypatia - a female mathmatician and astronomer - during the religous struggles of 4th century Egypt. Great movie!!
Comments:
Pretty lame, only reason this is here because the cult of waamen says so.
One of the amazing ancient movies I've watched so far. Shows the horror which mankind had to go through in the name of religion.

'accurate in the fact that english were (are) as horrible as they are portrayed'
That is a terrible comment! Would love to see Hollywood actually use historical fact. Ok film, not the best.
accurate in the fact that english were (are) as horrible as they are portrayed, but inaccurate in the fact that Robert the Bruce's role in Scotlands history was minimized
The most inaccurate movie ever made glorifying the wrong people. It is total Hollywood style tripe, but it set new precedent for battle scenes, etc. So forget the inaccuracies and if you are a teenager you will love it.
Totally inaccurate in almost every aspect as far as history and character. Has a great plot however, which can draw in the viewer.
I've watched this approximately 8 times. It moves me each & every time. Love it. 10/10.
one of the best of all the time ......... and perhaps best of gibson

there's 3 or four versions of this movie, the short version is butcherd, awful and doesnt make sense. The longer versions (iv'e seen 2 of these) are very good though if you're not in a patient mood dont bother as they're very long. Thery're not historically accurate but a good story in themselves.
Amazing movie, one of the best historical epics I have ever seen. Unlike movies like 300, they did make one side of the battle the 'evil bad guys.'
true, the muslim army had a sultan not a king. but you're wrong about balien running. after the defeat of the kingdoms army at Hattin, balien and a small number of soldiers remained in Jerusalem. the muslim army laid seige to Jerusalem, and it lasted from sept 20th oct 2nd of 1187. Balien then surrendered the city to saladin. Actually, saladin never allowed the cities people to leave for free. a ransom had to be paid for each that left. those that couldn't pay ended up being sold as slaves.
Not the king but sultan of the Muslims, n it's completely inaccurate and kind of "lord of the ring"Ish with his non stop blabbering about honor wen the person the main charecter is portraying actually ran from the city b4 Saladin army came...

This movie attempts to depict the Aztecs as a dying culture, ripe to be removed by Christians. I agree, that the Aztecs were a brutal culture and sacrificing humans was commonplace. But Christianity was not much better -- just think about the Inquisition.
Might not be the best graphics or the most epic wars but this is definetly the best ancient history movie i saw.

TV miniseries, but ended up being a moive. About Attila the Hun, during the times around the end of the Roman Empire (~400 AD). Epic battle scenes, scenes of life in general in Rome and other places, love scenes, etc. Quite a few historical inaccuracies, but very intriguing.

This movie should be ranked because:
It has a great plot
It has a great battle
It is very "epic"
It has great graphics

Hannibal: It is 200 years before the birth of Christ and Rome is the new superpower of the ancient world. She believes she is invincible - but one man is destined to change that. He is a man bound by oath to avenge the wrongs inflicted on his home and, in pursuit of revenge, he will stop at nothing. Hannibal explores the man behind the myth, revealing what drove the 26-year-old to mastermind one of the most audacious military moves in history. With 40,000 soldiers and 37 elephants, he marched 1,500 miles to challenge his enemies on their own soil. It was an act so daring that few people believed it possible. Hannibal combines drama, the latest historical research and state-of-the-art CGI to bring this spectacular story to life.

An exceptional film about three quite probable Neanderthal fellows sent by their tribe to retrieve the wonderous element of warmth amid a primordial backdrop of treacherous obstacles; the land itself, cannibalistic tribes, envious peers, lions and tigers and bears, oh my! And oh yes, the mysterious girl saved by the three who seems to posess the knowledge of how to "create" fire by friction. The tribe that possesses fire, rules life!

A medieval magnificent 7. It tells the story of a motley bunch of warriors under several months of brutal seige from king john's (the king who pissed off Robin Hood) viking army.
