This is a no brainer! Hands down, head and shoulders above the rest. The greatest all-around catcher, and one of the greatest players in baseball history.........

A great player and baseball legend. Above average defensively, a great hitter, and one of baseball's greatest winners. If not for Bench, "Yogi" should be on top of this list....

Great arm, good defensively, and a wonderful, clutch hitter. Still, I've read speculation as to how much of his durability and hitting prowess are due to steroids. I can't stomach that, so he's no better than #3 with me, if that.....

I have to give Munson credit, he was a great player and a winner. A great leader in the clubhouse, a clutch performer, and very good defensively. A hard nosed player. I like that......

I honestly believe that if Simmons hadn't played in the Era of Johnny Bench, he would have made the HOF. A fine catcher, especially offensively.

Offensively, near the top. However, he sucked defensively, which is the main job of a catcher.

19 points - added 14 years ago by BradHemphill - 1 comment
Comments:
If you do more research you will find that he was the best player on the greatest team you NEVER heard of the Philly Athletics of the 30's. The Yankees had no answer for him. He could hit (which was unsual for carchers of that period) and was defensive wiz. He should to the list. Bench was great, Hard not to be in those Cinncy teams of the 70's.

Not the greatest offensively, but well above average on defense and a pillar of consistency for the Dodgers in the 80s.
