He is the best. Orbison is close. Orbison has a beatitude voice but he can just sing high. Elvis is just as pretty and he can sing high low, slow, fast. He is just the man what can you say? When god created him he said ." And you will be the greatest singer ever"...and he was
Highly overrated, there were others much better than him, and certainly he is not the best vocalist
He wasnt called the King for nothing. You cant put Mercury above Elvis.

Paul was a great vocalist who could do amazing things with his voice . Good range, excellent dynamics & could go from crooning to screaming
Amazing range and good vocal quality even after 50 years of singing. Amazing song writer as well.
Between his time as a Beetle and w/ Wings, he has sold more music that anyone in history.
4.
Comments:
i agree, Lennon had an average voice, but the amount of soul he poured into his songs is unmatched
Jon Lennon=average voice
Beatles=most overrated band in history!

The quintessential rock and roll "Bad Boy", Morrison has been called the perfect front man. He had the looks to please the teeny boppers and the attitude to drive parents and police officers crazy. Combine this with one of the darkest and most menacing sets of vocals in Rock and you get the incomparable Lizard King.
Comments:
One of the best vocalist of all time if not the best. I always love his vocals on "The End"!!!!!
Great singer. Not a tenor though, definitely a deep high baritone. Nothing tenorish about his voice.
Solid deep tenor and excellent "screamer" although his actual vocal range was limited. Great at what he did.

Comments:
SP's voice dwarfed Freddie;s voice. He should be ranked #1 on this list.
Steve Perry has a very great voice that rivals Freddie Mercury's.
No one on this planet can match Steve Perry's vocals and delivery. Sure there are great vocalists out there but who can do justice to a song like Faithfully or Mother, Father? No one. He's a freak of nature and if you don't believe me just try singing one of his songs at karaoke.
One of the best voices ever! Wish he would sing again. Don't miss Journey. They ended when he left! Just miss Steve and that Soulful, strong, clear, commanding voice. He earned the title: THE VOICE! Miss him!
Gifted tenor vocalist. 80 million records sold can't be a fluke. Has enough class not to go after the notes he hit in his 20's. Great singer.
Over 80 million albums sold plus being named the fifth best American rock band in history in the 2005 USA Today opinion poll, Journey has loads of fans.
7.
The total package - amazing voice, great range, charismatic. He's a living legend for a reason - at the time nothing on Earth sounded like Led Zeppelin.
Comments:
Overrated? are you joking? without led zep rock wouldnt exist percy plant is one of the finest vocalists to ever walk the earth respect must be paid.
hideously over-rated!
admittedly, a great R & R Screamer.
Vocalist? Not so much..

I'm so glad to see Lou Gramm at #6. In my opinion, he and Klaus Meine have the greatest voices in R&R.
Lou Gramm (born Louis Andrew Grammatico; May 2, 1950) is an American rock vocalist and songwriter best known for his role as the lead vocalist and co-writer of many of the songs for the rock band Foreigner. He also had a successful solo career. Gramm was the vocalist for many top-40 hits including "Cold as Ice", "Waiting for a Girl Like You", "I Want to Know What Love Is" and "Midnight Blue".

One of the greatest vocal ranges in rock music ever. Take a listen to Queen's body of work and marvel at the versatility. That band could do anything, in part because there wasn't a note Freddie couldn't hit perfectly.
Comments:
No , mercury has great range but axel rose has more so big whoop .Elvis, orbison, perry they all have much prettier voices. They just sound better. More quality.
Out of everyone on this list, I'd say Freddie has the best range.
I feel Freddie is better than John Lennon. Possibly even Paul.
Freddie was unique and unsurpassed in every way, not only his vocal ranges. The warmth of his voice, the passion with which he sings, his magnetism and charisma, the way he was connected with the audience, the emotion you feel when you listen and watch him. Listen to the beginning of 'Somebody To Love' from 'Live at The Bowl', if you do not feel shivers and you're not in tears, then there is something wrong with you. And not only that, he was a great songwritter, a great and complete musician. That's why he is the greatest.
awful band and singer? your taste of music must be questionable.
Paul rodgers live singing with Queen was ridiculously good. I never would have imagined I would ever state that I liked it better than Mercury live but I do. It has always been Plant, Mercury and Elvis to me. Paul Rodgers blows the roof off. Check out you tube videos of Rodgers with Queen.
Incredibly vocalist, obviously. Perhaps the best. Range is a bit overrated. Great belter but couldn't go THAT high. More of a low tenor anyways.
awful band and singer..but theyre popular..they werent included in RS TOP 100artists and for very good reason..

Only in his Guess Who days. YouTube "Share the Land" live on the Johnny Cash show and you will get it. Period.

Klaus Meine is European legend. He must be on the tope. Lennon was good but Klaus is one of a kind!
Klaus Meine should be in the top 5. How is John Lennon better? Klaus Meine's powerful voice is as good today as it was 20 something years ago! I love him and Lou Gramm.
Klaus is definetely a singer with an incredible power! That delivers a lot of emotion in every single song. He deserves to be up there in the 1st spot with halford!
Still a brilliant singer into his 60's. Even after losing his voice in 1981, he recovered and has been as good as he ever was since. Always totally on key, and the vocal harmonies on record are amazing. Klaus has everything a truly great singer needs, power, range, passion and emotion. One of the true greats.

One of the greatest rock vocalists of all time. Forget the '80's power ballard era (as good as it was), listen to the '70's stuff like "Dog and Butterfly" that really show just how gifted this woman is!!!!
Anyone who says Anne who doesn't know anything about rock music or singing. She continues to be a premier vocalist and has been since Heart's inception.

Great range of vocals and an incredible performer and entertainer in concert. Not many better.
When Steve was at his peak, from 1974 to 1980, there was no one that was his equal. Freddie Mercury's different stylings puts him up there with Steve and Brad Delp would be a very close honorable mention. Steve could play keyboards amazingly well, would jam on the bongos and do handstands while playing the keyboards. Steve Walsh is legend.
His voice isn't very good now due to overuse and cocain use in the 80s but he could sing during the 70s and most of the 80s.
Another 12 year old with bad hearing if you call Steve Walsh NOT bad!!! He could sing anything, totally naturally. Amazing singer, amazing band, nuff said!!!
ok not bad..dust n the wind is good..he can sing but not top three of all time above legends of rock like elvis,morrison,cobain..you people like high-pitched shrill hair band singers dont ya?????????
steve walsh without a doubt was the greatest vocalist hands down end of story

How can any list of the Greatest / Best Rock and Roll singers not include "The Voice"? Need proof ... check out You Tube performances with Queen singing Mercury songs. And these are live !!
Comments:
He will never be able to sing like Mercury. Never! He maybe can scream, but not sing as Freddie did. It's a blasphemy to compare him with The Legend Freddie Mercury. Did you ever watch Freddie live? There are no comparations betwen them .
actually frank sinatra was "the voice" not rodgers..if you like retro 60's hippy woodstock rubbish with lots of screaming then hes your man..another robert plant...very very overrated.

IMHO Brad is the greatest vocalist ever, the emotions and melody in his voice is second to none, RIP Brad.
I cannot believe that Brad Delp is ranked 24th at the time of my commenting. Shameful. He is top 3 along with Steve Walsh and Freddie Mercury.
More than a feeling--mercury couldn't have hit or held those notes.
Just ignore the pathetic 12 year old troll, his balls haven't dropped yet!!!!
Since when was Boston a screaming hairband?? Obviously you've never listened to them for making that comment...
another hairband screamer..theyre coming out of the woodwork here..

You may not like his music, but he's sold more than 250 million records and can actually sing, unlike many of the jokers appearing on this list.

Great voice and performer. So many outstanding songs that will last the test of time. No one else like him. I don’t think he gained the recognition he deserved. Just can’t say enough about how talented and remarkable a song writer and singer he is.
25.
A full chested Golden Voice with a very complex and rich timbre. The most dynamic range of any singer in this list who are mostly screamers.
26.
Queen of rock. Great personality, vocal power, amazing songs with great meanings. A little woman with a huge talent.

under rated lead singer, great range, close to Steve Perry in style and vocal depth. Still trying to hit the notes though and needs to take a lesson from Perry.

The tragic story of Staley's life is a familiar one of pain, failure and addiction. All of this suffering is reflected in his amazing vocal ability - raw and unfettered and dripping with sadness, anger and brutal honesty. Many rock vocalists sing about pain, Layne lived it and it resonates through every note he every sung.

rock legend 4 sure..awesome power in the voice and his scream was unique.Voice had a gravelly rawness and loads of character.Interpreted a song.Best renditions are school and negative creep for power..and the man who sold the world and where did you sleep last night for timbre and interpretation.Top 3 vocalist.

Very distinctive voice no one can cover. From Golden country to 157 riverside avenue and roll with the changes and time for me to fly! Classic voice, classic tunes!
Very distinct voice that you can identify immediately but cannot be duplicated. Great voice that's been performing over 40 years and still sounds great!
Lost vocal range and power after throat surgery and should not even be mentioned as a great vocalist. Compare a 1977 version of Ridin The Storm out to any of his versions today. Sad.
Kevin Cronin (born 6 October 1951) is the lead vocalist/ rhythm guitarist/ occasional pianist for the American rock band, REO Speedwagon. REO Speedwagon had two #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 written by Cronin, "Keep On Loving You" (1981) and "Can't Fight This Feeling" (1985).

Buckley could hit every note perfectly Live. His voice is beyond amazing and could captivate anyone who was listening in person or through a set of headphones. With only one released album "Grace" before his tragic drowning in 1997. He had a great vocal range and a wide variety of influences. Buckley is definitely someone to consider when regarding great vocalism.

Needs to be MUCH higher on this list. C'mon, how can anyone put Steven Tyler above Jeff Buckley???
the passion is just what makes a song immortal. "hallelujah", "lover " .. must b in top 10. PURE vocal god
I agree with the other comment posted such a wonderful singer we all know it but people should never again attempt halleuljah nobody no matter who they are will ever get close to buckleys version it was magic

Seriously, this is not a popularity contest, is it? Top five in no particular order: Ozzy, Cornell, Orbison, Rodgers, Mercury. And, I love Grunge & Metal, but Cobain and Hetfield should not be near this list. Best Rock Entertainers is another list.

chester has gid voice .. agreed ... he has got the hold but doesn't have the talent to go up n down with e and lower notes.
honestly I think(and if i can remember correctly a famous magazine or MTV or wtv was it also thinks)that Chester is the best vocalist of his era he just owns with his what others call "unique" voice in my personal rankings it would be Steve Perry tied with Chester at number 1
His voice is incredible, his range fascinating. He is one of the only singers I have heard whose voice has multiple layers, souning like it is hitting multiple notes all at once. He can also scream in perfect pitch, without falter, and hold it for an impossibly long time.

Geoff Tate is top ten of all time 1981-1997; better than top 25 in 2006; ranking of 51 is soft; listen to take hold of the flame, queen of the ryche, jet city woman, warning, anybody listening, best I can, promise land; range and power is with out equal. It's fact he can no longer replicate the mastery and power he had in his youth.

Should be much much much higher,is a master of the bel canto technique and has worked tirelessly to achieve that amazing vocal vibrato we hear on every alter bridge and slas record, his real secret weapon is his power he is no known for it but when singing live he has the abillity to plaster you to the back wall just a wonderful vocalist technically perfect.
lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of Alter Bridge, possessing a tenor vocal range that spans four octaves.
Beats me why Kennedy is not higher. Range, pitch control, emotional content and beauty are all awesome.

Richard Noel Marx (born September 16, 1963 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American adult contemporary and pop/rock singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. He had a string of hit singles in the late 1980s and 1990s, including "Endless Summer Nights", "Right Here Waiting", "Now and Forever", and "Hazard". Although most of his major hit songs were slow ballads, many of his songs had a classic rock style, such as "Don't Mean Nothing", "Should've Known Better," "Satisfied," and "Too Late To Say Goodbye". Marx placed himself in the record books by being the first solo artist to have his first seven singles hit the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart (3, 3, 2, 1, 1, 1, 4). His record sales worldwide exceed 30 million. Aside from songs that he has sung himself, he has written, co-written, and produced successful tracks for other artists such as "This I Promise You" by NSYNC and "Dance With My Father" by Luther Vandross. The latter song won several Grammy Awards.(from wikipedia)
