The best care for an old person can only be rendered by his own family members. Often we think that in home for the aged they would be guided more by the proffesionals, but we were wrong, cause no matter how good they are in treating the physical pain that the old person is going trough, they can never ease the emotional pain that they might be undergoing. Caring for the elderly is our own responsibility and not of the other people, home is the best place to go for a person who only have few days left in the world. Let us not deprived them the oppurtunity to have this precious thing in the last hours of their lives.

I agree.. never easy but I guess its about time for the family to return back the favour that their elderly have done something that makes them who they are now. Putting yourself in their situation as to how you would want to be taken care of when you reach their age would give a big impact to see the importance of having them in the family HOME for the last fews years of their lives.
When I was a child, there was a short time when my Mom and her siblings couldn't take care of my grandmother, and they put her in a home for the elderly for a couple of weeks. (My grandfather had already passed away, and she was on her own.) This was back in the 1970's, and she was a Polish immigrant that moved to this country around the turn of the century, lived in a Polish neighborhood with other people like her, and never really learned to speak English. During the time she was in that home, we visited her, and the effect it has on me was profound. The despair I saw in her eyes was palpable, and it engrained in me the strongest determination that no matter what, I would always assure my parents didn't have to go to a place like that. Now, with my own mother nearing the end of her life (she's 86, and a cancer patient for the past 4 years), I'm grateful for having had that experience all those years ago, as it taught me the importance of stepping up and dealing with our aging parents in a responsible and respectful manner.
