Ingestion will quickly cause painful burning and swelling of lips, mouth, tongue, and throat. Used to be called the mother in law plant. Making the mouth swell shut so the mother in law couldn't speak.

Poisoning from eating the flower buds has occurred. Symptoms include vomiting, abdominal pains, diarrhea, labored breathing, lethargy and coma. Sensitive individuals may develop contact dermatitis from handling the plants.

Angel's trumpet contains alkaloids that have caused poisoning and death in humans and animals and it is so potent it has been used in suicides and murder. Children are especially vulnerable to the effects of Atropines and extra caution should be taken with them.
