the man was good and had one of the best rookie seasons of all time, and he did something that no one else thought would happen at that time and that is copy OJ Simpson and rush for over 2000 yards in a single season. so he deserves to be this high.

This guy is the best, he played for the terrible lions. I am not taking anything off the other greats here, but how would they perform with the crappy lions?

Comments:
Yes, the man is a murdering pig. Yes, he is a top of the line jerk. Yes, he's in prison. However, after Jim Brown he may be the greatest running back of all-time. He was the first to gain over 2000 yards in a season, and he did it in 14 games, not 16. He was a hard-nosed, tough football player. In his case, I'll give the devil his due, literally......

My personal favorite. Hard-nosed, tough, and fast. He would run over top of defenders. He even looked the part. A great football player.....

There are individuals greater in one or more aspects defining superb running backs, but Walter Payton had no equal in his level of excellence in all aspects: intelligence, field sense, quickness, acceleration, touch, versatility, strength, toughness, durability, attitude, courage, and class.

Two Jims led the league in the 60s, Brown of the Browns and Taylor of the Packers. In 62, Taylor, a fullback, averaged over 105 ypg. That's almost 1700 yds in a modern era season, by a fullback.
