Wild Strawberries Report Abuse
The self-imposed and deeply regretted loneliness of an old man at the end of his career was so moving to me as a 9 year old girl (from an entirely different culture) that its beauty must surely be universally understood. It shows how one should never make this man's mistake of isolation and yet knows that we will, and forgives us.

Pan's Labyrinth Report Abuse
The Seventh Seal for modernity - explores the meaning of the consequences of life through the creation of personal myth (or is it?). The reason myths were created are to give meaning to the uncertain consequences in life. In Pan's Labyrinth a myth is unfolded to bring meaning to the death of young girl. But is it myth or reality? Or does it really matter? Where and when does personal reality become reality on some level? On some level, does it really matter whether Ofelia's myth is true or not? - For her it is quite real, and provides purpose for her in her life. If there really is nothingness after death her myth provided the only meaning there is, a personal one. The film is littered with symbolism (i.e., Ofelia's 'sin' committed by eating the 'forbidden fruit'). All of this depth may be lost on the casual viewer who may simply be awed by perhaps the most engrossing adult fantasy in film and the stunning special effects. A classic in its own time...
