Ballarat, CA Report Abuse
This may not be the most famous ghost town, but maybe infamous. On the way to Death Valley, part of Easy Rider was shot here, and the Manson Family stopped here on their way to their hide out at Barker Ranch, also now abandoned.

On Route 66, this former mining town is famous as the honeymoon stop of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. Wild burros live in the surrounding mountains and come down to mooch carrots from tourists.

A silver mining town built on a series of switch-backs on the side of Mingus Mountain, it went from 50,000 down to 50. Parts have slid down the slope. Now it's an arts community of 353.

An old mining town that was deserted after the copper mine dried out, there are 40 structures (including the 14-story mill, the power plant, several other large industrial structures, three barracks, and several cottages) remaining.
