The high octane mecha/slice of life/thriller/etc. anime with some great new mecha ideas. I love the Gawain, the Lancelot, and especially the Gurren Mk. II. The characters are great, the giant robots are totally original, and the story's so engrossing that you never want it to end.
Comments:
I'm sorry to you people who like this anime but in my personal opinion this just isn't a good mech anime the mechs are honestly to diverse. Theirs to many mechs for certain things like land, aerial, submersible, etc and their is no all purpose mech and it eventually gets to be a hassle. Not to mention the plot line is not description and the plot itself has no real meaning he just wants to take over. In all honestly if I had to give it a rating 4/10 maybe 4.5/10 it just wasn't an anime for me. Also I don't know who said that the mechs don't rely on anything when you are clearly contradicting yourself in the next statement saying they need fuel pilots and the like that pretty much says it's very reliant on the pilot and resources.
The anime was quite intense... had a sense of Cruelty.... Shirley the cutest character was killed.....The machines were cool.... But the origin of Geass and the sword of akahsa wasn/t explained...the story ended splitting all friends at Ashford..... The story could have been made longer and happier.... But one can still consider it one of the best anime yet........
For those of you that don't consider Code Geass a "Mecha" show, keep in mind its recent appearance in the "Super Robot Wars" video game franchise.
WHY? Guys... code geass is an AMAZING anime... like.. one of the best... but I REALLY don't consider it a mecha, I mean, just because there are Mech's in it.
beside the first season being awesome I had major problem with the number 2 it felt more a drag on then something going on and in the end it was predictable also the ending is to unrealistic to be good ending it had all this dark twist plot and then pow everyone can get along and everyone happy in mecha terms they look really cool but could have more action but I notice that was not the focus of this anime
this is the best mecha anime i have seen, the story is deep, the characters are isolated and always have secrets that u want to know about, the night mares have a unique look to them, it is just a wasome anime
HELL it is the best!!!!!! Noting of guren seiten and lancelot albion's final battle.MOST AMAZING BATTLE YET!!!
Well it's great and all, but most series the mechs are 1/2 the show but code geasse mechs are only 1/5 of the show for its also life, thriller, war, super hero, collage, super spy's, killing family's
well this list is okay but you should make the whole series 1 place so gundam cant have 3 places, and ya this show was great, great ending, great characters, check out the parody code ment (yotube)
Sure this show is good, but it's hardly #1. Hell, I liked Big-O better than this one.
this anime actually knocked down full metal alchemist brotherhood from it's place as my number one anime that's how good it is, it has the perfect fusion of mecha action, school life, romance, it has its share of plot twists that will blow you away, and it's story is dark and unique
Code geass is awesome. 4 those of u who thin the mechas suck, watch the battle between the guren seiten and Lancelot Albion.
I really, really enjoyed Code Geass, but I'm very sure it's not the "greatest" anime ever. I have not seen all anime out there so therefore I cannot assume this is the greatest. Before you respond to my comment I must note I have seen all episodes and both seasons of Code Geass, but be logical there are likely other greater shows out there.
Basically, mecha for people who don't like mecha.
Don't really care for this one.
Amazing Show Easily my favorite. This is more of a show with a lot of mecha action than a mecha show, but this show is highly mecha driven with almost half of the series being mecha fights. Gurren MK ftw.
their knightmare frames are unique, not like others they have this so called evolution where some of the robots are only used in ground battles 'cause it cant fly,, now they developed a float unit so for me this is no. 1
This anime, is amazing. Although, it has its mecha action, it isn't centered around it. It has enough mecha action, in my opinion, to satisfy your mecha craving, as well as much more. I highly recommend this. It will amaze you.
Yep, it's a mecha anime indeed but as you get into the plot, you'd be surprised that it doesn't feel like mecha at all. I dunno, but that's what i felt. Interesting characters, though, with the Geass ability...
But compared to Gundam or Macross, I'd say that Code Geass 1 & 2 utilized mechas as support for the plot of the main characters...
Watched both the seasons. its a must watch anime. the story is filled with political manipulations.
It is a really good show to watch. Unlike Death Note (which was depressing at the end) this character doesn't lose his humanity. As for the 2nd commentor I doubt you watched beyond episode 10.
Story line is awesome, the characters are okay (It focused a bit too much on the main characters). It had just the amount of mecha needed to make these series look good. any more would ruin the anime (yes, you can have too much mecha in an anime)
sure it has very little mecha in it, but i HAS mecha.. Story line is awesome, characters are meh
I don't know what others are on about, there is loads of mechs in this and they are quite unique mechs as well. Its an awesome anime that doesn't rely on outragous mechs that can do anything by themselves. In 'Code Geass' mechs need to 'refuel'. They have attachments that allow them to 'boost', 'jump' and help them ascend or descend cliffs and buildings. They are not multi-role mechs either. There are land mechs, aerial mechs, and submersible ones too. They have a more realistic cockpit and ejection system that is frankly just cool.
As the episodes go on you get more advanced mechs but even these ones aren't unstoppable behemouths like in some other animes. And most importantly the story is really amazing. It's not just a monotone mecha anime there are other 'plot devices' and some special abilities that broaden the anime even more. Just give it a try, most episodes can be found online very easily. :P
fav anime in the world. Watch it. it will, no doubt, blow your mind
Terrible characters, mecha hardly had anything to do with it at all and a diabolical deus Ex machinae in pretty much every episode. Couldn't be less about the mechas apart from episode 1 and 2. (and 2 episodes out of 50 don't count.)
Hardly a mecha show, were The he'll is votoms or any of go nagai classics this isn't a very good list
2.
Half of it may be making fun of other mecha anime and anime in general, but this high octane show is just too hard not to love. It has great characters, the most unique mecha after Gasaraki, and some of the best catchphrases in anime history.
Comments:
One of my favorites. Great story, great animation, and great ending
This is a great show, not only the mechs and all the fighting (this is my first mecha anime, i do not know much about it) but the characters make it the best part, everyone plays a great role in this anime. From it being sad to totally badass, it is totally awesome!
Was a good anime, but I think it lost itself after Lord Genome was defeated. Got too pseudo-philosophical.
People have called Gurren Lagann a ripoff of other mecha series. I couldn't disagree more. It is a TRIBUTE to the super robot genre if not the entire mecha genre. We see the series progress from the zany hot-bloodedness of 70s series like Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, and the Nagahama Trilogy (the time the Episodes were named after Kamina's Quotes) to the grounded, militant series with romance like Dancouga, Zeta Gundam, Macross, and Gunbuster (Nia's quotes), to the darkly emotional series like Evangelion and Brain Powerd (Rossiu's quotes) to the return to hot-bloodedness with lessons learned from all of the other phases like GaoGaiGar, Dai-Guard, Dendoh, Gravion, Dibuster, and finally Gurren Lagann itself (Simon' quotes).
one of the best mecha animes i've watched so far. people who don't like the genre will like it as well. the plot and idea are very uniques and many of the ideas and characters in the anime are completely different from most mecha anime seen
Beyond than any Anime... Gurren Lagann its a statement. You can use all your "good story" and "its overrated" arguments, but you guys will just keep blocking yourself from the Core Raw Greatness that is TTGL, (witch haves a more than good enough story to drive the message home and back) This work of art goes beyond all standards and so It shan't be compare with standard Anime...Pierce the heavens and don't stop there, make your own Reality regardless EVERYTHING, Thats the Gurren Brigade way, thats MY WAY!
I guess you have never watched Armored Trooper VOTOMS or any of its OVAs. That is the true king of mecha animes.
I like this show, but the truth is that I've never found any other anime so overrated. What really makes me sad is how people praise the "manliness" of it's characters, when most of what Kamina and Simon do is to loudly repeat empty and meaningless speeches. I would find them more mature, malier, if they actually thought before speaking: of course the characters can be as brave as they want when they have the Spiral Energy working as THE Deus Ex Machina engine.
Watch for the action, but don't expect much plot.
This series is SO amazing that when I first watched it, I stopped for a while 'cause I was worried it was TOO amazing.
A worthy sucessor to the crown of such greats as Getter Robo Armageddon and GaoGaiGar
I loved every second of it. Empowering, courageous, triumphant, and wicked, WICKED AWESOME. If Gainax had the budget to make more than a mere 26 episodes (recap excluded), I could die a happy man. You'll get closure in the end, but you'll be on your knees wishing the story had genuinely happy ending.
Watch this anime if you are a fan of unbelievable camp with few real-life issues.
Only a select few become "instant classics". This is one of them
Despite what anyone says I don't think the world would be complete without this anime... Watching it should be part of an initiation to manhood
I personally wasn't a fan of this one. I look for a little depth and reality I guess, and this show is not that. If you're not going to have those factors, just go alllll the way in the opposite direction, like FLCL or something, this show kind of 1/2assed it... just not to my taste, but apparently others enjoyed it.
Just a note for those who didn't want it to end...HOW COULD IT GO ON? I mean, it is bar none the most epic of anime, but with the way each episode didn't just one-up the previous, but ten-upped them, and with the final battle having mechs so big they're literally tossing ENTIRE GALAXIES at one another and hardly even feeling it...there's very little they could do to top that, and they quit while they could.
THE PURPOSE OF LIFE IS TO SEE THIS ANIME!!! I just finished it today and after the last episode ended, I just sat there depressed because the best show in the universe had ended. I RECOMMEND THIS ANIME TO EVERYONE, WHETHER YOU LIKE MECHAS OR NOT!
Another amazing mech anime. Pretty cool if you know a bit about physics, because they drop a lot of stuff about things like the Uncertainty Principle, make a reference to Schroedinger, etc etc... on top of all that, lots of mindless fun and some of the greatest catchphrases I've ever heard....
The ending seemed to be kind of rushed. They could've made it way better. Or atleast they could've made it that the last episode doesn't deny any kind of follow-up with the same characters. Still there's huge potential to the storyline, but sadly I doubt that anyone is gonna pick these series up and make something under this name.
You just gotta love this anime! I DIDNT WANT IT TO END! I RECOMMEND IT TO ALL ANIME FANS! EVEN THOUGH U DONT LIKE MECHA ANIME, YOU'LL LOVE THIS ONE! "JUST WHO DO YOU THINK I AM?"
3.
A modern version of Gundam Wing, complete with super cool new robots and a superbly political twist that brings new life to the franchise. It also has some interesting new characters, most notably the four Gundam Meisters.
Comments:
Gundam Wing started my Gundam infatuation. Gundam 00 only helped to instill it.
Currently 11 episodes or so in on season 2, so far it is 100% worth the watch... Targeted and ready to Fire! xD so badass!
I am not surprised that this show is number one. Its got amazing Gundam styles, the story is superb, the realism that this series contains is unmatched and how all these aspects come together into one of the best things i've ever watched. This is the kind of show that you will always remeber in the back of your head. Many people dont realize this but the future that series shows is extremely plausible, especially the oil crisis we are facing now. The Space Elevator is being developed currently with the plan to make solar power from the help of the elevator structure. Aside from the realism, the characters in this show are done masterfully. I hope to see more shows done like this, very life changing! Enjoy
For me its really the best anime i have ever watched,it was just so perfect,so in depth story great action and awsome design,i enjoyed every second of every episode, although it is a sci-fiction it was so realistic and it features some real life events such as the war in Ireland and real countries and the twist in the story is just incredible.Never in my life though that any gundam series could come close to gundam wing until i watched 00,i love both of them but i certainly enjoyed 00 more.
I was blown away right from the start. The characters are incredibly developed with such TRAGIC pasts, and as time goes by you can't help but love them. (helps that everyone's also incredibly good-looking)
Good series, just be sure to wait a little between ending the first season and starting the second.
Only gundam series that used A.D, as their timeline.
AWESOMENESS + REALISTIC = EXCELLENCY
Lockon Stratos "Sniping the targets" FTW end of 1st season sad though. This I would really recommend.
Best Gundam series ever!!! There is not one thing that i didn't like about it. It was like the perfect anime for me. It is a need to watch show!!!
The best gundam series for me!!! Love it! The characters are great, story's good! 1st to 2nd season is GREAT!! The movie is good too lot's of action just a bit weird out on the ending other than that it's still great if you can bypass the weirdness of the story of the movie.
I actually found the characters more enjoyable than those of Gundam Wing (and I'm feeling like there's a sniper rifle trained on my head right now)
This is a good series. It takes some of Gundam Wing's aspects and adds a pinch of salt in the form of interesting characters. Heck, I found myself actually rooting for some of the so-called "antagonist" characters like Patrick Colesawar and Sergei Smernov.
Good show, but the main flaw is that no matter how powerful you make them, YOU CAN'T DEFEAT ENTIRE ARMIES WITH JUST FOUR MECHS! That aspect really bugged me.
One of the best Gundam series out there. It sways off from the typical Gundam stereotype set by old Gundam series and Tomino creations and goes off to create an universe of it's own. A masterpiece of modern age.
A series for a bored gundam fan that is fed up with constant repeats of the same story TOmino created.
Amazing how modern anime fans haven't experienced series from the 70 -90s. So many shows missing from this list like Space Ideon and Macross 7. While 00 was a decent alt universe Gundam, it fails in comparison to Zeta Gundam (later) or Stardust Memory.
If you want to watch classic anime, you might want to check out this site:
www (dot) mechacore (dot) com.
Most of the classic and modern day mecha anime is posted there.
Gundam 00 is a remake of a better Gundam series called Gundam WING! go watch it! You poor souls were tricked into liking this crappy series and then brainwashed into liking it. Wing FTW!
This series started off pretty boringly, and my first impression was "this will never top gundam seed. never." But eventually after the 8th episode or so, things began getting so epic, so fast that I was practically blown away by the sheer awesomeness. Also, you can never right a positive review on G00 without complimenting the 2nd OP- Ash Like Snow. Simply awesome.
Simply too awesome!! I have watched many of the shows listed below, and i can confidently say this was the most engrossing....also the music is excellent and the animations are top class.
Recommended for anyone-absolutely anyone
This Gundam series was the BEST, in my opinion. It was REALISTIC!! It could even happen in the near future!! GUNDAMS IN REAL LIFE!!!!
Oh my god, words cannot express how AWESOME this anime was. It comes in two seasons, similar to Gundam Wing, 25 episodes each. Just be warned, after you finish the First Season, let it sink in, then watch the Second. I swear, the ending of Second Season was amazing. I love this anime, amazing storyline and awesome characters. The Artwork is simply amazing and the connection with the characters is great.
My favorite anime. It has some of the best fighting I have seen in any of the Gundam series. The mechs are amazingly awesome and the story is amazing. I also think this Gundam series has the best characters of any Gundam series. I ACTUALLY fell in love with the characters and almost cried when one of them died. Amazing anime. Watch this.

ITs all a chess game with Mechas if you dnt watch this your not wothy to call yourself an anime lover
Comments:
A truly brilliant mecha anime, with awesome(Incredibly awesome) fight scenes, original storyline and great character & mecha design. id recommend it to just about anyone whom loves watching anime! both 1st and 2nd season where just captivating to watch. trust me on this one!
Yeah, sorry but I think you can be an anime lover and still be forgiven for not watching this due to an aversion to overly emo drama and a massive lack of likeable characters. Tries to be a very clever anime but only gets half-way there.
Is the abundant amount of misspellings in the description a mistake? Or is it purposeful and I'm just missing the joke. It really could be either.
I have mentioned my comment about both parts of Code Geass in the above Code Geass entry..... :P
im not gonna lie.... this anime was breathtakingly good, its not often anime of this calibre arise however i didn't feel like it was better than TTGL, my opinion. i think this should be 2nd and TTGL first :)
To avoid confusion, I don;t think it would hurt to call this entry "Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2"
Code Geass is SOOO AMAZING that it deserves this second entry. I suppose it has a different feel than other mecha anime shows. It was the second anime i ever watched (ive only seen 3) but it was a great transition from death note because they both have A LOT of strategising.
Um, don't you think this is redundant seeing as there's an entry for Code Geass already?
I dont call this a mecha but it hold one of the best anime storys out there. mostly because it gives a genuine feeling of truth to the story and not just fantasy written all over it
5.
One of the biggest names in mecha anime, it's all about Ikari Shinji and his struggle to pilot the Evangelion to face off against Angels, giant living beings bent on destroying mankind. It gets pretty weird at times (and I mean WEIRD), but the characters are very memorable, and it's excellently psychological. Just don't be surprised if you don't get the ending. No one else does.
Comments:
Thank you so much i saw the bigining several years ago and have been trying to find it thank you so much.
Technicality! This series is technically NOT a Mecha series, due to the fact that the units are bio-giants sealed in armor and operated via a neck probe.
WHY THAT ENDING... I'm going to be depressed for weeks. Not to mention it was just terrible, if it had ended any other way.. 5 star anime.
I love how people bash this anime here...
They should be thanking it for half the storylines/Characters you see in anime today. There wouldn't BE A Gurren Lagann if there wasn't NGE. Whats more is that not only has NGE influenced many many anime, but all the ones that have tried to follow in its footsteps in terms of story or even characters, have ever yet been as amazing. THIS should be in the top three...
ill admit that the ending may not make much sense at first, but rewatch the series and think a little, once you get it, youll have to admit that its a way better ending than just another battle. (which are cool btw)
fav anime for me.
This anime is for people who really know how to appreciate it, if you don't understand the amazing argument of this anime it doesn't mean that is not good. Imo, is the best anime 've ever seen in my life.
Personally, I couldn't bring myself to like this. There's just too much ambiguity and confusion, but I can safely say that I'm probably not a member of its target audience.
NGE is mainly aimed at people who hasnt had a childhood and havent grown up, imo
i agree its a very good anime despite the fact that it can get confusing at times but i must say i did really enjoy it
This anime is amazing, but it's the kind of thing you have to analyze a bit. If you watch it repeatedly, there are lots of easter eggs for people that are into things like psychology, philosophy, and comparative religion. Tons of Kabbalah stuff, Christian symbols, even references to Babylonian religion... and don't get me started on all the Freudian stuff. One of the most cerebral anime ever made. The Rebuilds (1.11, 2.22, etc) are brilliant, even better than the original series.
This series is not the type of series you watch on a whim. This series sucks if you are just watching for fun. you have to sit down and be prepared to analyze EVERYTHING, and enjoy doing it, to even think this anime is good.
Not for me. 0-star rating.
Well it should make you think shouldn't it, anime is for thinkers.
there was actually a remake of the last 2 episodes. everything will make sense after you watch it.
This show is really good. Personaaly it is one of the best animes. But be warned. You mind is going to get a work out.

This series is amazing. I'm literally having withdraws because i cant find anything like it. I'm going crazyyyyy.
Good series... new concept... though I think they killed it in the later episodes.... with a better plot i think it would gone higher.
To not see how truly amazing this anime is is quite a shame. So much passion in the story line, it sends shivers through my spine. Btw getting into a good anime isn't too easy for this guy, just thought I'd share. Highly recommend this show.
Good God this was a horrible show. I watched the whole thing hoping it'd get better. It's a long anime full of the main character whining. It's a mecha anime because it has mecha in it, but they're a side thought in the series. Unlikeable characters, sparse action and a lot of whining. Avoid at all costs.
I did like this series for blending super and real robot themes together, but the series has major flaws. Watch it if you are looking for an out-there type of anime.
its an ok anime, but it didn't keep me on the edge of my seat like the others on this list. In my opinion it lost its edge after episode 20.
By far the greatest anime i have ever had the pleasure of watching, not so much for the mecha which is the best of any mecha anime, but for the story line and romance, which is unbelievably great. The first half of the series is difficult to understand and you got to be okay with some weird and stupid at the beginning but if you watch it episode by episode and pay attention, you will come to agree that it is the best Mecha/Comedy/Romance anime out there without a doubt. 100/5 stars any day.
Ah, this is what I give a sub-category: Extra-terrestrial Mecha anime, like Evangelion, Cybuster, etc.
An interesting show. I recommend watching it. (Written by: MC)
Glad to see this show at #1. Overall, the action, story, characters, romance, themes, are amazing, making this one of the best multi-genre mechas out there.
7.
A modern reinterpretation of the original Gundam saga with updated mobile suits and totally different characters. It may seem like nothing more than a rehash at first, but eventually, it grows into its own story. It then becomes extremely exciting and the best Gundam has ever had to offer. Plus, the Strike Freedom is possibly the single coolest Gundam ever.
Comments:
the best ever gundam series i've watched. the plot is good an so with the characters. it has its flaws but the the thing that makes it best from the others is that the story in seed which is continued in destiny are connected to reality, and everytime the main characters opinion cames out, it hits the spotlight, all the thoughts, the argues, the lessons were always so clear. it also shows the truth to how the problem to blood killing, the hunger of war , corruption and discrimination to human differences starts. i mean seriously, you're illogical if you dont get the story
this one should be number one it's the greatest first anime series i have ever watched when i was about 5-6 and now at the age of 17 i've just finished watching the whole series again and it's opened my eyes to how corrupt the world is and that we will only end-up destroying ourselves with all the pointless fighting that is everywhere in the world even in schools where kids are being treated poorly by their peers and teachers at some schools still won't except the fact that their school is exceptional. when those students then get older even ones they thought were there friends stab them in the back. everyone's guilty and us as a human race shouldn't be allowed to continue living if all we do is pollute corrupt and kill innocent people with no remorse. we should all just die a painful and slow death, not considering that it's already happening with north koreans thinking neighboring countries are there threat and them claiming to posses nuclear weapons and scaring the innocent people in countries where the leaders will only say that they don't have the capabilities and that everything is fine, if their wrong then the whole world would be destroyed nuclear draw no one will win but if north korea attacks one country there would be retaliation and everyone will suffer and there's no way around it. sure gundam seed was sad and ended with the human race almost being annihilated by their own actions, but we should all learn from that war isn't a pretty thing and that no one actually wins one persons killed then another in revenge and so on...it's all pointless
i never liked Gundam Wing, dont understand the fascination with it, full of plot holes. character development is non existant or illogical.
having watched all gundam incarnations in existance, i LOVED the 08th MS TEAM, the original SEED series and Gundam 00. Destiny SEED has its flaws and for a while doesnt know where it wants to go, but halfway thru becomes interesting again.
bottom line i felt most emotional connection ith SEED. probably score and phenomenal songs had something to do with it too.
I think one of the problems with SEED and SEED Destiny is that they are often grouped together, and thus, the flaws of the latter make people dislike the former.
Meh rather go Wing or 00 any day. It was just too awful to bear I couldn't consider this a part of Gundam to myself. I would suggest the other Gundam instead they were better.
This series is AWFUL! The story is bland and sappy, The relationships between the characters are over-dramatic, the character designs are too similar to each other in a way that makes males indistinguishable from females, the main mechs are overpowered, and the overuse of recycled animation is just glaring. These are just some of the problems with the shows. Of all the AUs of Gundam, this is the worst. Go watch and read the side-stories, they are all much better than seed or destiny.
In a list of the worst gundam produced, Seed would be in the top 3 for sure.
Just a copy of several other gundam series with a childlish art to bring younger fans to the series.
They totally focused on the gundam and completely ignore the storyline. Just Trash.
This series had a well drafted story line. I would give it more than 00. good guys fighting against good guys. strongest mecha ever seen "gundam freedom"
The best Gundam I've seen. In fact the only Gundam i've seen. I don't seem to like any of the others except for maybe Wing (which I got bored of after ep 5 - Probably since i loved this one so much).
(Wriiten by MC)
seed is a better series than most i've seen in Gundam. . . .not just because it's visually appealing. what it has, that i could not find in its predecessor, is the intrigue and a story that's not character-driven.
The problem w/Gundam Seed, is that from a realistic story point, the only mech one needs IS the Strike Freedom, or one of the other Ubermechs. Everything else militarily is irrelevant. Its like building a Battleship the size of a pontoon. Sad really, most gundam series are rather decent. Seed is the worst one I've seen yet; unless you're looking for the highest powerlevel gundam of all - Super Gundam Level 4 - Bwah ha ha!

I don't see how this is so low on the list, this was the first anime I ever watched and now, years later, it's still one of the best, at least as good as Gurren Lagen!
Worth the time to watch. I would recommend this. It's a bit old but heck its has pretty original characters and Gundam designs. There ain't nothing too fancy that makes them uber powerful just the kind of Giant Robot action no catches no secrets..... except maybe Zero and Epyon but they still aren't overpowered and invincible. Any fan of mecha action should check this out.
I remember watching this as a kid. its what first turned me on to anime and to this day i rate it the best mecha anime ever!!!
This is the only Gundam i recognize. I could not watch any other Gundam, i tried, honestly. 00 was too fruity to me and i didnt care for any of the characters. It my not have the visual effects of today, but it makes up for it with story.
One of the best Gundam series. Stotyline, along with new gundam designs and awesome characters gave new life to the franchise at the time.
Possibly the most powerful gundam, ever, wing zero, you just don't find good mecha anime like this and all the other mecha shows listed here, anymore.....
9.
The anime just started, but its already in my top5.
Friendship, betrayal, magic, war, great action scenes and breathtaking Mech, this anime got it all!
You definitaly should watch this one!
Based on the awesome manga Broken Blade.
Comments:
the animation, the setting, the story , the potential love triangle... everything is fantastic but two things:
the ending which is really not the ending.. you know there are things to come.. and so it does in manga..
and i didnt like the final battle, as the abilities of its ancient mecha were at most dissapointing after a whole buildup thruout the episodes... i expected something else, more complex, hidden... because the story was so effin' great up to that point.
i hope they make more..?
This is one of the best mecha i'v seen. It's strenghts are its setting, mecha and character design, story, direction. The combination of all tehse factors, make this one of the top mechas, comparable to gundam and macross.I'v seen the complete series in latin america, it truly is great. The action seen take time, but they are orignal and stylistic, making you want to see more.
I hope there will be more OVA or spin offs.
At the moment only two eps are available out of 6. Definetly watch it and favourite it. Finally something to break the dry spell.
10.
The story's theme is based on stories in Greek mythology, especially those surrounding Heracles, upon whom the main character is based, and his Twelve Labors. Many of the other characters are also based on Greek mythological figures; characters share similar names to their Greek counterparts, and how their relationship is defined with others correspond with Greek stories. The title of the series, Heroic Age, is also a slight testament to the similarities to Greek mythology, referring to the time of the Heroic Age. The tribes featured in the anime are loosely based on Hesiod's Five Ages of Mankind.
Comments:
Great show! I found this because I like Greek Myth and this is awesome! Watch it it's a great great show!
(T-REX GrimStud)I also recommend this anime, action packed, and great art work.this anime is way better than Tengen Toppen Gurren Lagann or Big O...come on really 31 place

Personally i don't think this anime should be in the top 20. in the initial episodes it may seem to you like an awsome anime but when you get to the conclusion of the series youll be dissapointed by the pace & plot of this series. it doesnt have much emphasis on mecha. the action scenes are very few, poor. the fights are not technical. its just guns and simple punches. its basically those ecchi animes with inoriginal/poor mecha & character design. if you have watched several mecha animes you would agree with me on this.
Full Metal Panic, second raid and Fumoffu! Are probably on my top 20 anime series of all time!
I enjoyed the knock-off season Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu! better than any of the others...
The story could have been much better..... there was no romance between the main male and female character..... arm slaves could have more weapons installed in it....characters shown in the song in the begging were not given much role..... Kaname, should have been given a more special role..... :(
i found this anime as a suggestion from my friend when i asked if he knew any animes like code geass. this ranks in my top five, but not above code geass or tengen toppa gurren lagnn
One of my absolute favorite series... Season two was more of a filler season than anything else, but still enjoyable. One of the few series that I've seen that would appeal to both the action-seeking and drama-seeking viewers!
i think the comic part was interesting. the mecha action was cool. only the story was a bit slow.
Seriously. i liked the first session. but as far as i could tell the second session had absolutly no mech battles in it. stopped watching it half way through cause it got so damn boring. whats with that.
i loved this series but lets be honest no way in hell is this better then Code Geass, c'mon people be real.

Actually this Anime aired same time as Evangelion but due to high popularity of Evangelion this anime never got the attention it deserved. It's a great anime
If you think this is a rip off of evangelion you probably think everything based on judaism is a rip off of evangelion. They are two different animes inspired from the same story. Black eggs white eggs etc, and used giant living robots as an analgam to biblical figures.
Worth watching. especially 16th episode (or 17 i'm not sure. you will understand if you watch it^^)
watched a few years ago but i remember liking it probably top 20 of all anime in my view
Horrible, boring bs,
It's a shame, I really liked the mecha design.
actually Neon Genesis Evangelion and RahXepnon are ripoffs of Space Runaway Ideon, made by Yoshiyuki Tomini(hope thats how you spell it) Everyone dies. Literally, EVERYONE DIES!
I disagree, it does borrow somewhat from N..G.E. but it's more inspired and influenced by Yuusha Raideen, the aliens are called "MU", Ayato fades in to Rahxephon, you could call it a mash up, but it's well done and can stand on it's own.
RahXephon is a total and utter ripoff of my favorite anime of all-time: Neon Gensis Evangelion. Its not bad but its not on par with the rest of the Mecha genre on this list.

"Do You Remember Love?"(Macross First Movie), it's my favorite anime movie!
Definitely a must see
The design of a plane-to-mecha is very much plausible...
Macross Frontier... 7/10
This is by far the best mech anime I watched, I still compare everything to the original Macross series. Amazing mech, gripping story, good characters, and great animation (well for its time). I highly recommend this series.
Who doesn't like a mecha that changes from a plane to a humanoid mecha realistically. I recommend some of the later Macross series (final frontier or something like that) - (Written by MC)
. . . if only it could go back to its more 'novel-ish' war-like drama roots. that had been its most enduring appeal.
14.
A good series with a lot of heart and an absolutly FAN-TAS-TIC ending.
{REMOVE THIS ENTRY IF IT COUNTS AS A PART OF THE "Macross" ENTRY}
Comments:
This is a great mecha anime series with innovative technology & hands down awesome mecha design. the plot is very unique to that of other mecha animes and has characters whom are quite memorable.
One of the best mecha animes ever. The musical parts get boring from time to time (you can always skip ahead) but when you watch the last episode you will think it was worth it.
Not the best anime ever but the last episode is the absolute best anime episode ever. dont miss this great series
15.
Original story, great plot, and space battle. This is a great series with almost everything you could ask for in an anime
Comments:
better than gundam 00
is not serious, not depressing, and very moviative
I like the way the Vanguard combines with the Dreadnaughts.
VanDread vs. Gundam 00 Raiser, now that's cool
Men and Women are enemies and live on different planets! I'm sold. Its really funny watching three blokes and a male robot stuck on a ship full of over a 100 hot women, not to mention the awesome mecha/drone battles. (Written by MC)

Complex, excellent direction and animation and a compelling soundtrack all make this a must watch. One of my first series and one that I continue to compare as a standard.
One of the best series ever created... however it could have been even better still.
it was a great series.. though it dragged on a little at the end.
17.
awesome robot fights. its got no huge robots and people with special abilities but the robot is just a metal suit that covers half your body and it has a lot of girls and one retarted main character. Its very easy to find on the internet. Watch it and you'll love it.
18.
Has 5 seasons each with a different story to it. Zoids is a series that features mechanised combat units (called Zoids) that battle each other in either wars or tournament based competition etc. The main difference between this series and anime like Evangelion, Macross and Gundam is that their mechas don't look humanoid, they resemble animals. Everything from your extinct dinosaurs and Mammoths to your wolves and sea creatures.
My personal favourite Zoids are either the War Shark (Primarily water bound but has been seen in sand) or the Raynos (ariel combat unit).
Its a must watch show. Recommend NCZ or CC
Comments:
Not a bad anime although the terrain they battle on could be a bit more diverse as it's usually just desert but that's just minor. Also it could use work on some of the zoid designs as some of them are pretty ridiculous like the gun-sniper owned by Lina I mean that is way to much firepower and the design theoretically wouldn't be able to support the weight of all those turrets missile tubes/launchers and plasma rifles on their.
yes i agree also but after you have watched them often enough the humour gets kinda dull yes i do love the first four series's but the fifth i am yet to understand as so far they have not release an english version which i might add is really silly if you ask me cos for one i have watched it in japanese and from what i could tell the evaloution of the murasame liger is just something incredible and yes i will admit there are a few references to chaotic century and new century but in my oppinion the links are only noticable only if you have seen all episode from the previous seasons but of all the seasons i prefer both new century and fuzors in all i give zoids franchise a 9 out of 10
I totally agree with the comments below, cant believe this isnt one of the top shows here. I'm sure if you watch one or to episodes, you will be hooked! amazing concept and great stories.
How is this show not top 10, its totally amazing! Just watch Zoids Zero and you will quickly realize how amazing it is. New Century has some amazing adventures and tons of humor. Watching any of the seasons from Zero back, you wont be dissapointed!!!
New Century Zero shall for ever remain a classic for me. Bit Cloud and Liger Zero... man does that bring back memories.

A crowning achievement of mecha and a fantastic noir mystery story to accompany it. It's definitely a must see
If you like giant robots and film noir, then don't hesitate! BIG O! SHOWTIME!
This is a great show, but the ending is confusing as all hell. watch it if you want to see a giant robot detective story.
How the hell is infinite stratos higher on the list than Big O?? This is a stupid list and you should all be ashamed.
By far my favorite anime i think it should be number 1 the story is amazing i was so sad when it ended
20.
The father of the Gundam franchise and the one to take the genre into mainstream. It brought us the first really cool giant robots, the Gundams, and gave us a great, epic war story along with it. Most of the other shows never would have even happened if it wasn't for Mobile Suit Gundam.
Comments:
seriously, yes gundam is good but they dont need 4 freaking places, puty them all together.....
When I finished watching this series, I got a warm an fussy feeling inside of me, not like when I finished watching the three other Gundam series I had completely watched at the time (G, Wing, and 00).
It's easy to see why this series was so revolutioary when it first aired. It looked more on the subject of war and showed us that when it is boiled down to it, there is no "good" or "evil" in war.
If you want to get into the Gundam metaseries, I recommend starting here and watching every other series in chronological order
Really great. Piece of Art. Every gundam serie ever made has a piece of the first.

I still don't get how Van can't pay for food, but owns a satellite. How does that work?! Anyway, watch this show. Period.
Just watched the final episode, and I can only recommend this series, EXCELLENT, the lead character "Van" is great, part goof, part hero, and loves the spicy food, and the fight scenes are epic, and the "claw man" as a villain is brilliant, they should make another chapter, "Wake up Dann"!!!
22.
Comments:
One of the best shows of the Gundam franchise even though it is said that is one of the darkest series. I believe it was a better story than MSG, bringing back the most memorable characters and showing the cruel reality of war. Kamille starts as a whiny boy and ends more mature till the end
An amazing show. Much better than the original Gundam and probably better than most of what has come since.
23.
The quality and epicness in this anime are astounding. While the main character of this anime does not actually pilot a giant mecha himself, there are plenty of other characters in the anime doing it. The concept of this anime feels unique and gives plenty of room for variety in fighting (even if he as the main character one shots almost all mechs he comes across) i would definitely recommend this here.
Comments:
Forget the ending, the whole second half of the series was completely stupid; but the very first episode made my blood race as much the last arc of Gurren Lagann did. For what the show could have been, I believe it should come right behind Code Geass. Also, Mika Kobayashi's "Bios" is phenomenal.
24.

Take the courage-borne power of Gurren Lagann, sprinkle some of the over-the-top methods of G Gundam, and a pint of the physics used in the Transformers series, and the result is a cocktail of EPIC
Comments:
Personally, I think that this series has plenty of aspects that were inspired by older shows and still some that were taken up by newer ones, resulting in well-thought-out mechas. However, that's just me. I recommend watching it just to see how you feel about it, OVA sequel included.
My God, this series was BORING AS HELL. Combining in the exact same way, while doing the exact same attacks with a barely changing design, bland-looking allies, and an awful plot and antagonists does not make this a good show. All of you fanboys out there who like this show for whatever reason need to stop overhyping this series and disappointing us with this in the end. The sequel OVA was much better than this show. Don't watch this ever.

Newest Mecha Anime about how the humans pilot giant robots to protect their home from the aliens !

for me muv-luv is the best, it should be the num one mecha anime..it gave me an intense heartbeat while watching the first episodes and i totally like yui and yuuya!
"Let's kill off all of the lead characters in the first episode!"

This show is epic! I love this itssad though but APOLLO is HOT! I would love him as a boyfriend!

Classic Mecha at its finest, little awkward and absurd old-school beginning, but it gets better and better. Also characters are sometimes bit annoying and plain... But I liked (a lot during second half) the plot, universe mechanics and very awesome ending.

Not really to spoil it but the japanese version is waaaaaaaaaay better than the english one...
Recommended if you're a super robot fan. Not so much if you're used to other Gundam series

Is it witty, realistic, or realistically witty?
Either way, worth watching?
An excellent combination of sitcom comedy, mecha anime and political thriller. It can also serve as an introduction to the Patlabor franchise.

LOVE this!!! In my opinion it's so much better than Gundam Seed! The characters looks too similar but other than that the story line is definitely better and the characters are much more memorable and lovable than gundam seed. I cried at some scenes! Must watch the movie and ova too great story.
32.
I couldn't believe this wasn't on the list. Easily one of the best Gundam animes out there, it's themes are far more mature than the average Gundam anime. It's very short, but it's a romantic tragedy akin to Romeo and Juliet. It's an OVA, so it's short and to the point, but it's like one of those short story masterpieces that leaves you feeling emotional.
Comments:
Best installment ever. Gritty and real with no special gundam just ground units fighting but awesome and well thought out
This installment of the Gundam series is to me, the best. Written with a keen eye for drama and storytelling, with none of the teen angst that haunts the rest of the franchises series. Definitely on the more mature side of the genre with morality plays and the big question of "Why do we fight?" figuring throughout the OVA.

I usually kinda hate mecha anime, but I'm in love with star driver! it is dazzling!

It's so awesome because Inaho fights the technologically superior Martians with limited Earth technology. He's an awesome genius and the plot is unpredictable yet gripping.

It spends a crazy amount of time panning to every character's face with no real audio. I lasted about 3 episodes before I couldn't take it anymore. And I made it through the second season of Haruhi Suzumiya...soo...there's that
36.
Giant Robo is considered one of the true classics of anime. With each episode varied in time(35-60 minutes each), each episode is like a movie, it sounds and feels like one. It's over-the-top action and adventure will leaving you grinning cheek to cheek. It was so over-the-top, those who watch the last episode after watching the first six, have known to spontaneously combust - it's that good and enjoyable!
Overall, I give this a 10/10. This is a must-own to any and all anime fans. Truly a masterpiece in every sense of the word.
37.
Good atmosphere, especially in the beginning. Character development and story flow felt pretty solid. The only thing I didn't like was how it ended.
Comments:
Not very known, but this is a great anime. The storyline is good, and the character development is solid. Mechs are quite cool as well. The only problem was that this anime didn't have enough funds for better animation and graphics, thus the quality. What a waste because it was such a good anime.
Well the story-line is pretty good, the main male character goes from been a wimp to a great hero. The heroine kicks ass. I'm not even talking about the really scary and catchy music. The graphics were... how can I put it, they were bad like really bad for an anime of that year (1999) they could have benn better. It really reminded me of the movie: Starship Trooper.

Comments:
Robotech is a bastardized version of the original Macross series... they took out key parts and played it out of order when it first aired. True Macross fans dismiss this series completely because of this. Just watch a subbed version of the Macross series from the beginning for the full experience!
Robotech's BGM soundtrack was vastly superior to that of Macross. Minmei/Minmay's songs were poor in either language of Macross.
On some scenes in Robotech you can see the original Macross character names written, "Lisa Hayes" has a shuttle with "M. Hayase" written next to her seat (Misa Hayase is her name in Macross) in about episode 10.
I'm not sure why you're saying the art is better than Macross. The first 36 episodes ARE series 1 of Macross. The Robotech art is the SAME ART as Macross. Episodes 37-85 are from the anime series "Southern Cross" and "Genesis Climber Mospaeda". Might as well watch all of the original series with the storylines and music intact. The American adaptation music sucked.
Watch this if you havent watched macross yet. Drawings and animation quality is much better since macross is pretty old. Other than that they are pretty much the same

One of the best things I liked about Gundam X is how its main protagonist, Garrod Ran, was just... normal. He didn't train all his life like Heero Yuy. He wasn't a urgeoning superhuman like Amuro Rey or Setsuna F Seiei. No, he was just a normal guy trying to survive, AND HE BEATS THE CRAP OUT OF PEOPLE THAT FALL INTO THE CATEGORIES I MENTIONED DESPITE THAT!
41.
A retelling of the classic Getter Robo story that has inspired later works like Gurren Lagann.
42.
43.
It's not even finished yet, but already it should make the list. Has all the style of the original, but with a new story and updated fight scenes that look so super fantastic. The animation is mind blowing enough to put this show on the list, without mention of the improved voice acting and brand spanking new soundtrack as well. Plus, it's Evangelion. Top 10.

the story is very good, thought it quite confusing in the early episode. Very cool mecha with awesome power.

Mechs that goes head to head in a battle of intense racing. Each Race is done with 2 competitive teams that consists 3 people/mechs each. The actions are also during the racing such as mech vs mech, kicking, punching, grabbing etc.

Although not well-known in the West, it is arguably one of the greatest classic anime produced by the same designer Kunio Okawara, who also designed Gundam. It also influenced some video games such as Lost Planet and TitanFall. I highly recommend you guys to watch it!

It's a very good series(in my opinion), it deserves to be more popular that it already is. :)
I did acually come here in search of just this series. I saw it many years ago, I think one of the main characters were pretty cool. If i remember correctly he had a patch of white hair and a yellow eye due to a injury. And the series was kind of sad. Good, worth seeing.
-3 Points? (Bumped up to -2) This is one of the most interesting and mystery-unravelling series I've ever seen!
Great plot, great story-line, great ending. And it always contained more than one surprise behind everything.
It is also quite sad, sad for the little girl, sad for the protagonist who slips in to quiet madness.. Sad for the metal alien creature, peiced together in a lab.
But it all ends well. Or at least, well enough. :)
50.
One of the best action anime I've seen. The animation is godlike - the action scenes are amazing. You can feel the intensity of every exchanged punch. There's explosions, large beams of doom, and giant mecha battles. The characters are awesome, and the anime has a great serious tone to it. If you have a good woofer, prepare to be blown away.
But DO NOT WATCH THIS UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE FIRST SERIES (GUNBUSTER). If you have seen Gunbuster, it will make your Diebuster experience much better

I can't believe gurren lagann is not the list of strongest mecha!
"Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann" from the movie, mechas are fighting on top of the freaking universe!!! This is to be the beastliest!!
56.
One of the originals and best. Landmates are one of the best mecha designs out there showing how mecha likely would be if they got made. Legendary design, characters that stay with you, awesome, massive universe. Only problem for me, is the storyline tries to get too philosophical at times, and as happens more often than not, fails.
58.
59.
The Mecha fight scenes are epic and the storyline and direction is easy to understand in the realms of Japanese anime which is a breath of fresh air when you try to understand something like Evangelion. Detonator Orgun was my first and still my favourite Mecha Anime.
61.
An artistic way of retelling the classic Mazinger story, with no shortage of plot or action either way, and new twists on old characters and mecha.
62.
63.
Awesome mecha anime. The story is kind of fishy - apparently all the humans have died, and the remaining ones are those who live in a virtual computer-simulated world. Some however have managed to break out, and are fighting, to protect, what seems to be the location of last server, while the enemies are trying to find the server, and make it their home.
64.
A deconstruction of Mecha cliches and conventions, but not devoid of plot, Dai-Guard is a great series with plenty of colour!

Who hasn't seen Voltron , the 5 lion mecha .. well , he cannot call himself a mecha fan :D
Even if the american version is more child friendly and all the violent/deaths part is cut off , the anime is still one to remember and watch whenever you get the crave for an awesome mecha anime.

A mecha anime that gets way too little credit. I loved the characters and the sense of dread in the fights against the mysterious alien creatures called Gauna who possess overwhelming strength.
76.
It's original name "Go-Shogun" was beaten by the american/european name and soundtrack of Macron One. And besides , when launching in the first episode , who did not loved the "Beat It" song of M.J.
