Greatest Musical Theatre Songs written by Stephen Sondheim

10 items ranked

Sondheim's greatest due to both the song's exsquisite melody and it's brilliant lyrics! Only songs where he wrote both the music & the lyric! (i.e. ~ do not include songs from WEST SIDE STORY &/or GYPSY!)

"Sunday" (from SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE) Report Abuse
This song is both totally & completely musically satisfying as it is lyrically too! Besides the never ending goosebumps one has as it continues to build and build with each new stanza, who also can't get that Perfect Fourth interval out of their head after hearing it repeatedly throughout the song?!! True creative genius from each and every standpoint here with this one!

"Unworthy Of Your Love" from ASSASINS Report Abuse
How somewhat unsettling & creepy ironic to have such an absolutely gorgeous melody and beautiful lyric attached to these two historical characters Hell-bent on killing a President! This song is sheer genius as it's so creatively outstanding both lyrically & musically!

"Move On" (from SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE) Report Abuse
One of the most heartfelt & gut-wrenchingly beautiful duets ever written for the stage from both a musical, as well as a lyrical viewpoint! Also one of his most emotionally draining (and satisfying!) for both the singers as well as the listeners!

"A Moment In The Woods" (from INTO THE WOODS) Report Abuse
How could one go wrong with a clever little melody you can't get out of your head when it's paired with such a brilliantly crafted lyric such as; "Let the moment go… Don’t forget it for a moment, though. Just remembering you’ve had an ‘and,’ When you’re back to ‘or,’ Makes the ‘or’ mean more Than it did before.”

"Pretty Women" from SWEENEY TODD Report Abuse
Another example of one of his most incredibly beautiful melodies that just floats & soars effortlessly as it contunues on, blending oh so seemlessly with his ever so lovely descriptive lyric that leads us to imagine every single pretty detail of the female the singer is referring too.
