This is my favorite show. It pains me that this isn't at least top 100, and it's my personal number 1. As a composer, I can't help but pay attention to the role of the score in a show, and here the score is simply unbelievable, so perfectly communicating the incongruity of Leo Frank, a Jewish man from Brooklyn, and Georgia in 1914, which is clearly still dangerously committed to the ideals of the Confederacy. It has a solid book and masterful music that makes you feel the tragedy. What bugs me the most is people complaining that the show is too heavy, since that's precisely the point of showing this event; it's meant to expose a dark chapter of history by way of powerful, moving drama.
Added 9 years ago by guest, 0 points
OK the story is a little down for a musical. Probably one of the most original and innovative scores of the past 20 years. I can't hear "All The Wasted Time" without tearing up.

This stayed so long on Broadway because it was a parody of the 50s and caused people to think. More people know more portions of this musical than many of the 180 ahead of it in this ranking. The entertainment value of this musical was and is huge. It does not belong at this "rank".
Added 13 years ago by guest, 0 points
I agree that Grease really is not the best musical when it comes to morals. However, what if the whole purpose of that ending was to make us think? To make us feel sorry for Sandy at the end and encourage the opposite response from the "slutty" one she chose? Just food for thought.
Added 13 years ago by guest, 1 point
There is nothing funnier than when a Catholic high school produces Grease. The moral is not only encouraging conformity, but that if you want the guy, go slutty.
Added 14 years ago by guest, -1 points
Grease has fun songs, but the moral at the end is misplaced. I mean, it basically says that it's ok to compromise who you are as a person just so you can be a **** and get the boy. What kind of message is that? Shame on you, Grease for encouraging conformity.
