Since the arrival of Charles Dutoit on the earlies eighties,as conductor of the M.S.O,it is considered for many critics as one of the 3 best in NorthAmerica, and therefore should be among the top 10 of the World.Listen to its recordings of Ravel,Debussy, etc, etc
Comments:
The Montreal should rank higher. Both under Dutoit and Nagano, they have been known to reach true excellence. I have experienced spine-tingling performances from them. As a professional violinist myself, I would rank them near the Bamberg in overall quality, i.e. in the top tier. The numerous Decca recordings of the Dutoit years give fine testimony to their abilities, which have not deteriorated.
Nagano should simply quit conducting. The worst conductor this orchestra ever had.
Until the OSM starts paying their musicians competitive salaries, it's unlikely to move up that much. Pay rates tend to hover around 30th in North America.
With their brand new state of the art concert hall, the Montreal Orchestra is on the rise and their are making more and more live recordings which is a sign of the quality of their play. With Maestro Kent Nagano at the lead, any world renown musicians are participating with the orchestra including Quebec's own international superstar pianist Alain Lefèvre.

Amazing performance, beautiful rendition of Beethoven Symphony #6
We are taking a North American tour of major orchestras performing Mahler No. 6. The TSO's performance a few years ago was loose, bland and uninspired, almost as if it hadn't been rehearsed. Definitely deserving of its ranking here.
TSO should rank in the top 20 ! The players are fantastic, but need better guest conductors, like Haitink, Jansons, and Zinman, who can match & challenge them
I've seen both and The Montreal symphony orchestra is much better

Vibrant 70 piece orchestra with outstanding reviews playing at the acoustically magnificent Costa Hall in Geelong. Provides an orchestral stage for Australia's international solo artists and now considered by its guest conductors as the third finest symphony orchestra in Victoria.

Most of the Japanese audiences tend to forcuss on praising the performance of famaous and leading European orchestras and USA orchestras. However ,I am Japanese resident and can't afford to buy tickets for such orchestras visiting Japan.I have to be satisfied with the local ***. orchestras. YNSO's new comductor, S.Cambreling is worthy listeng
