The Berlin Phil are a classic example of the "what's in a name" psychology . How can you say they are definitely the best - it's impossible. They are certainly one of the best through consistency of quality (more so than the VPO which seems to vary more) but what makes them better than say the B.R.S.O. or the Concertgebouw? Well, nothing really.
Best orchestra in the world but not the best conductors lately.
the Rattke tenureship is deceptive in many fields of German repertoire...very precise but often cold and without pathos
Just listened to the Berlin Philharmonic's performance, and it was truly outstanding....a true tour de force with such precision and elegance!
With the Vienna Philharmonic, definetely the best orchestra in the world.

They made the best recording (with James Levine) of The Planets by Gustav Holst I've ever heard.
They played with an amazing precision and an awesome sound.
Been to Chicago and Cleveland both in the year...splitting hairs..even this ranking is absurd regarding the variance in the artist form. I would give the nod to the balance of the sound and musicianship to Cleveland, although conducting and that bright brassy sound keeps Chicago neck and neck..

is a symphony orchestra of the Netherlands, based at the Concertgebouw (concert hall) in Amsterdam. In 2008, a group of top critics ranked the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra as the top symphony orchestra in the world
Comments:
the RCO is still one of the very best. the recent mahler 9 concerts under haitink (unfortunaly he fell after the second concert) were breathtaking!
Wonderful velvety strings, woodwinds are unsurpassed, brass exceptional. An orchestra capable of playing like a chamber music ensemble with utmost clarity and transparence. Flexibility is also astonishing.
I love the Berlin Philharmonic but NO ONE outshines the RCO. One of the wonders of the world!
definitevely the best symphony orchestra in the world with luxuos sound and an incredible commitment in the repertoire from bruckner to shostakovich: lady macbeth of mszensk under Janssons, and many other great recordings show this preeminence
Best all round philharmonic from the modern calssics as well the early classics
5.
This has got to be the most prestigious and the most famous of the world's orchestras
Comments:
incomparable strings but for the modern Repertoire or even Ravel BPO and RCO are far better
As a regular visitor to concerts all over the world, I can honestly say that I never heard any better orchestra than the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
There might be orchestras with a fuller or clearer sound, but to all people out there seeing this as a disadvantage: I ask you to at least try finding out the reasons for it - because there is a very simple one.
Overrated Orchestra, Berlin Phil, London Symp and Concertgebouw are all better. Hasn't got a sound like the other big 4. They play Beethoven well though.
IT IS the best orchestra in the world... playing opera and symphonic concerts daily on that high level is simply mesmerising and astonishing... they are brilliant.
Very disappointing with D. Gatti conducting in Mahler’s 9th (Madrid, May 24th).

Their recording of The Planets was played way to unprecise for being that famous.
But at least heir sound is great.
The L.S.O. is not as consistent as the B.P.O. but at their best they are hard to beat and definitely belong in the top 5 IMO. You can't judge them against other top orchestras in their home hall because it suffers from poor acoustics compared to many Continental and American venues. I think the appointment of Rattle as new chief conductor was a mistake but time will tell.
probably the ensemble with the most wide range repertoire (Russia, under Gegiev; English, French, German): this is due to the great discographic tradition of this orchestra which has been led by the greatest of conductors from each corner of the world...they succeed everywhere, as they did 50 years ago in the Monteux-Kertesz era
When they are on top form (which is not always) the L.S.O. can match any orchestra in the world. Their biggest problem is that their home, Barbican Hall, London, is no match acoustically to the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Vienna Musikverein, Boston Symphony Hall, Bartok Hall, Budapest etc. etc.
LSO are in a different league to the American Orchestras. I live in new york and see NYP 15+ times a year. Went to see LSO when they were in New York and they blew the Phil out the water! They played with fire and passion and the string sound was twice the size! Under Haitink, they are the best orchestra in the world. Concertgebouw are over rated, way too many bad performances every year!
I think London orchestras are over-rated compared to American ones because of magazines like the Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine. Pay levels are much lower as is the competition for spots. Players also move around frequently, which doesn't help.

It's called the Boston Symphony Orchestra and abbreviated BSO not BSN

exceptional orchestra which is leading a traditional rediscover of German repertoire by an Italian chef, mr Chailly, technically improving year by year
Gewandhaus has one of the worlds most vibrant musical histories and is alive with these traditions today! Definetly one of the top five in the world!

Definitely one of the 20 finest orchestras in the world. Improving season over season in most sections.
Dudamel is the best conductor ever, under his arm, they played amazing, I think they are better than any of the orchestras
Under Dudamel, they play like they're on performance enhancing drugs! What a sound!

founded in 1783 during the reign of Catherine the Great, this orchestra was know before the Russian Revolution as Russian Imperial Opera Orchestra. Being one of the oldest institutions in Russia, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra became worldwide famous under the direction of its conductor Valery Gergiev.
Comments:
In my opinion this orchestra is as good as any of the world's best orchestras including Berlin Phil, Vienna Phil and Amsterdam Concertgebouw. I attended a spectacular performance of Mahler 5 under Gergiev in Lucerne in fall 2016 and was truly impressed. Being a professional orchestra musician myself I like to think that I am picky about top orchestras. But I am a big fan of Mariinsky Orchestra now and now listen to their recordings on youtube in order to prepare for pieces that come up in my orchestra. They never disappointed me so far.
No shame in acknowledging the greatness of this orchestra. I think it's way too low on this list.

From it's formation in 1946 until around the mid to late 50's the Philharmonia were arguably the finest orchestra in the World. They are not in that same league today but are still an extremely fine ensemble and I would certainly place them above the mediocre New York Phil.
15.
resident orchestra of the finest hall in Europe and one of the finest in the world (Symphony Hall, ICC) and has the most talented and energetic young conductor. The music making that goes on in Birmingham with this orchestra is never anything less than utterly amazing and so fresh and new. They have built an international reputation, with thanks for that to Simon Rattle for the time he was conductor here. And their name is getting even bigger thanks to Andris Nelsons!
Comments:
Very fresh and exciting times ahead with new female conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla
16.
With Chief Conductor Mark Elder, they rank as one of the finest orchestras in the world. There recordings (particularly of English and Choral music) constantly receive acclaim and are awarded internationally. The recent recording of Elgar's Apostles won both the Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine recording of the year award.

PSO’s four reed principals will stack up well against those of any orchestra!
If this list were organized best HORN sections then pittsburgh would number one. William Caballero is probably the best horn player in the world right now. It's the same with Pittsburgh Brass!!! Awesome!!!

This orchestra was not included by an international panel a few years back when compiling a list of the world's finest orchestras but it seems to me, having streamed many concerts from the Salle Pleyel, that with Paavo Jarvi in charge they can match almost any of the competition in most sections, particularly the brass which is brilliant!
I have heard this orchestra play several varied programmes over the last 2 years and I find it is an incredibly adaptable and enthusiastic group of mostly young musicians. From a great jazz-concert performance of Gershwin last year to the drama of Beethoven and Copland, this orchestra should rank closer to the Boston Symphony and both should be higher. Thanks!

They have an extraordinary unique sound, especially in the older days under Ančerl and Neumann. Also an awesome brass section
Despite the fact that the orchestra cannot compete with the shadow of itself under Ancerl, there are plenty of proofs of great music making under Mackerras, Beholavek and others...they defend their nation's music heritage which incredibly vast from the XVII century onwards.
Mafia's music creators :) A great art from the small country! One of the finest
fantastic string section, delicate sound, very abitous musicians. great orchestra

clearly Ivan fischer's work (who issued from the vIENNESE SCHOOL OF THE Abbado's Metha's and Barenboim's) has created a worlwide orchestra incredibly effective in Brahms, Mahler, Kodaly, Bartok...it was difficult to say something new in this repertoire and they have succeeded

The concert orchestra of the City of Vienna. Philippe Jordan will succeed outgoing Fabio Luisi as the orchetra's new Music Director in 2014. The appointment of this sought-after young conductor will certainly boost the orchestra considerably.

The NRPhO is a 68 year young orchestra, developped during the last 7 years by its former chief conductor Jaap van Zweden in a real great orchestra. Bernard Haitink, who started his impressive career almost 60 year ago with the NRPhO, accepted recently its patronage and will celebrate his 60th jubilee wit this orchestra in sept 2014. Recent cd releases (Bruckner and Wagner) prove the qualities of this band. markus Stenz is the present chief.

founded as early as 1854, it is the orchestra of the legendary Teatro alla Scala opera house in Milano. It has played in the premieres of masterworks such as Verdi's Othello and Falstaff. Its prestige has been reinforced by great conductors like Toscanini (musical director and principal conductor from 1898 to 1908), Claudio Abbado (1968-1986) or more recently Daniel Barenboim (first guest conductor since 2006) that have influenced its musicality through the decades.

They have an amazing sound, and is the best Norwegian Orchestra. They play so different type of music, all with high quality, but they also set up the big symphonies and get world famous soloist to play with them. It is a Orchestra in huge progress and my opinion is this the best version of Oslo Philharmonic orchestra ever been. Even when Mariss Jansson conducted them. Vasiley Petrenko have reached new heights with this orchestra and still impress and surprise in every concert.
44.
The best orchestra of Brazil and Latin American.
Comments:
The best Orchestra in South Hemisphere. Much , much better than several orchestras listed above, but due to its low visibility (due to small consideration of Brazil in world classical scene) it is not correctly evaluated. Clear and powerful sound, repertoire, excellent infrastructure and instruments, excellent musicians make this orchestra a treasure in classical world.

Way out! Now they have David Robertson and Vladimir Askenazy: they should be at least in the top 15. They definitely deserve more recognition!
Unjustly here. Should be in at least top 15.Biggest improvement since Askenazy take over
47.
A relatively young orchestra by comparison (1959), it deserves inclusion on the list. In addition to having the United States' longest consecutive-running radio broadcast concert series which continues to this day (MSO On Stage), it was a pioneer as the first American orchestra to distribute live concert recordings online. Its concert tours historically receive critical acclaim. And the group has only gotten tighter under the direction of Maestro Edo de Waart. It is an undervalued musical gem in the midwest United States.

Check it out on Youtube for yourself. Brittish commentators rank it number four ahead of London Philharmonic Orchestra
Comments:
Loud, crude playing in all sections. One of the most vulgar sounding orchestras you will ever hear.
Very good youth orchestra. Do not belong on this
list though, as there are hundreds of professional
orchestras that play much better.
Heard them in LA doing Mahler's 2nd. Tough to beat! A clear, inspired performance under Dudamel.
It is at least the first Youth Orchestra in this Rank... In my opinion should be closer to the top 10
It should be at least on the top ten.. check out the proms 2011, Dudamel grew up in this orchestra.!
they play unstyled and too strong and I think is it boring all time

The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is a Malaysian orchestra, resident at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (Petronas Philharmonic Hall) in Kuala Lumpur. The orchestra gives concerts throughout Malaysia and also in Singapore.
Founded in 1997 under the direction of its first music director, Kees Bakels, the MPO gave its first concert on 17 August 1998 under the direction of Bakels. Bakels served as the MPO's music director until 2005, and currently holds the title of conductor laureate. Bakels initially had intended to step down from the post earlier, after James Judd had been named the MPO's next music director in September 2003.[1] However, in April 2004, the MPO terminated the agreement with Judd without public explanation, and Judd never took up the post of the MPO's music director.[2] Subsequently, Matthias Bamert was named the MPO's music director in November 2004[3], and served in the post from 2005 to 2008. Claus Peter Flor became the MPO's music director starting with the 2008-2009 season, with an initial contract of 3 years.[4]

This is a joke survey if you're putting Singapore here. Malaysian Phil is superior by almost any assessment - just basic compensation and cost of living should be a dead give-away. Also, putting it way above Pittsburgh, New York, L.A., (where's San Francisco?). Be serious.

This, the national orchestra of Aoteora- New Zealand, under the nation of Inniken, has a respectably vast repertoire under its sleeve and an unique rich sound
....should definitely be in this list

I am surprised this orchestra, and an equally proficient orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonic, have no place in this ranking. I would urge music critics to hear this outstanding orchestra. It has received rave reviews during world tours.
