Live at Leeds - The Who Report Abuse
it shows what studio work never could about the who. they were all phenomenal musicians and knew how to work with each other to generate a wall of sound (with three instruments!) but not at any time chaotic. They knew exactly what they were doing. For example listen to shakin All Over or young man blues. On this album they made some of the heaviest noises you can make-- just listen to the intro to Sparks, or Magic Bus. there is no one sound that takes the lead-- they all had a very aggressive sound. Keith Moon and John Entwistle made the backbone of the band and drove the sound forward-- they leave empty spaces. Not to mention how godlike Entwistle's tone was. Then on top of that foundation Pete Townshend lays down these acidic guitar licks that can take your skin off. He doesn't solo a lot, but his rhythm work is fantastic. And when he does solo it can really knock you dead. None of the songs on this album were hits-- they weren't meant to be accessible. Live at Leeds shows the raw power and unadulterated energy the who had in their prime, and nobody can beat it.
