it's old school and somehow seems retarded, it used to be my #1 but now i guess i change my vote to dragon age: origins
Your all entitled to your own opinion and since my PC is custom built, by me, and I own alot of games pc and consoles, I have the best PC games period. I have all consoles on my PC, the ones that I own (NES, SNES, Sega Genisis, Saturn, playstation 1&2, dreamcast, N64, Gamecube, all handhelds, etc...) BG1 was fun. BG2 was astounding in a story line, however, as far as gameplay, I agree with last poster. Icewind Dale 2 was more favorable for me. The gameplay was awesome. Personally... I want someone to put Shing Force 3 on the PC or Newer system! Or at least do a Shining Force 4!! Spent all my childhood days on that game... LOL And yeah, I got it on my PC, but with extras. Scenario 2&3 are in japanese EXCEPT someone has turned it to English for me. :) Oblivion was a good game, but as comparison to BG??? Graphics was better, but gameplay? No way. Crysis was fun... I'd put it on par, but not better. Any RPG you can beat in a week or less is not an RPG or you don't read or listen to the story line, which in turn makes you a moron. RPG is called RPG for a reason. So, quit F'ing it up and go back to the old days, make a PS3 game look like a PS3 game, but play like the old. Example, Panzer Dragoon on a PS3 or 4? Don't boost the graphics, instead add to the already immaculate story and you would have a masterpiece with gawking eyes at every corner in disbelief. That's my opinion. I say Baldurs gate 3 mixed with Icewind Dale's gameplay, with some PS3 graphics and long, long hours of story line and gameplay... perfect. Better than WoW I'd say. Don't like my opinion?? Good. I Don't care. Call somebody who does.
What about Icewind Dale 2? I thought it was better than Baldur's Gate. I still play them today.
I still prefer Baldur's Gate (the first one) in BG2 you know what will happen from the beginning...
Hey man do you know what are you saying? How the hell can you hate a game you didnt played?
What are you 5 years old grow up already in order to hate or love a game you have to play it before.
guess the ones who hates on bg2 never played it... fo'sho no newer game comes even close to bg2.
Whatever graphic-freaks say about this game, it's storydesign is still the best ever made (maybe except for Arcanum and planetscape: Torment) for any RPG!!!!!!!
i cant believe that such a old game is 1st place on the list
doesnt deserve this place maybe 5 or 6 place but not this what kind of list is this a corupt one?
for all those who question themselves how this game is on the top...well probably because it was added 4 yars ago i think it was the first game added on the list if games like Gothic,Witcher,DA,TES and so on would have benn for 4 years on the list they would have passed 10000points by now each of them
oh and by the way...WOW so far down on the list? Jesus, probably one of the best selling game ever and the most played RPG in the world and you placed it in 63?? The Judgment of this list is about graphics and personal experience with the game and not a real Top list...
I can't believe you didn't put DiabloII and Final Fantasy VII and VIII in the TOP 10... if you're looking for "recent" games I could understand but beeing this a topic about greatest RPG of all time you sure are far away on judgment....Diablo Series and FF series are number 1 everywhere.
its a good game but is not better than Gothic or Elder Scrolls series
As of yet, still the best RPG I ever played. Sadly, all modern ones are flat so that the big masses can digest it. But... after seeing the announcement of Project Eternity I've got hope I might experience the BG-feeling again with a new game!
i love this game so much.. And i laugh each time some1 trying to even COMPARE new games to this one
i have played The Temple Of Elemental Evil so many times. i am like the number 1 person who hates turn based games but this game keeps pulling me back in especially when the CO8 group keeps adding more fantastic mods. if they would remake any of the old games with better graphics they would instantly become #1 on game charts..."imagine dungeon and dragon 4.0 rule book..all those beasts shown in the best graphics ..u play it at night with the lights out ....men that would be fantastic"
The reason old games are beating out new games is because as graphics increase the length of the story of games decrease, the developers aren't spending any time on the story anymore, now it's all about graphics. Which is retarded, graphics don't make games fun, gameplay, and replay value does.
Its sad that 10 year old games aren't surpassed by anything... Instead new games are only shallower..
Minsc, id like you to speak to that man :)
but the crown is divided on three(different style) games: fallout1/2, baldurs gate1/2, and gothic 1/2;
okay, technically thats six games, but they are actually more or less the same(graphics and gameplay-mechanics)
this is of course only my lowly opinion, but if you call yourself someone who enjoys rpgs, those are a must to play.(yeah torment is close by, on rank 4 id say, cause its combat really sucked)
Very good game, try also Planescape: Torment if you like BG2
so i played all the newer rpgs like skyrim, oblivion dragon age 1 & 2, fable 1, 2, 3, etc. i had looked at this game because it was supposedly the best rpg ever but didn't get it cause the graphics looked horrible. saw it on gog for 10 dollars so i got it and started playing...it was like OMFG...i got pulled into this faster than any other rpg....i must have played it at least 4 hours a day for the first two weeks...it is DEFINITELY THE BEST RPG I HAVE EVER PLAYED...going to play bg1 after i finish this
best game by far, neverending combinations of classes and there is so much gameplay but you just cant get enough
I agree with all the favourable comments posted here. One of my favourite parts was the ability to obtain a stronghold and ACTUALLY use it and have quests revolved around it. I know it wasn't important to the game so much but I would have liked to be able to do more to it....I guess if the game was more open ended it may have been possible...I really preferred the top down party based play as well. An old school gamer I love a good RPG over hack and slash any day!
Without question, the pinnacle of RPG development. We will not see a story based/tactical rpg like this again in our lifetime based on the current trend.
if someone thinks here that baldurs gate 2 isnt the best rpg ever....well...they dont have a clue about rpgs..it doestn even compare to the 2nd
epicness is probably the best word to describe this truly amazing game. Sometimes i would shut myself in my room and play this for yonks. But man on my second play-through i didn't even bother releasing jaheera at the start. She is such a *****!
Took me a little while to get into it, but once I did, it became a favorite. Enormous depth, in character choices and in sheer size. Great, non-repetitive combat. Solid writing, and some of the best NPC followers ever.
Both of Baldur's are legends! Hey, now when I saw this list, I feel eager to make again my jorney to Baldur's Gate!
Meh it's a decent game but a bit generic, yes you *could* play chaotic evil but you get nothing for butchering an entire village other than trash drops, and your companions are VERY plain, some are even just an annoyance and I ended up killing them throughout the game.
Playing the entire trilogy over again.. beat BG1 last month, imported my mage into BG2 and im only 10 percent through...when im done with this Im going strait to Throne of bhall.
There will never again be anything as deep and immersive as the BG saga/ Torment/ Fallout 1 and 2.
My XBOX 360 is collecting dust as we speak..Im so disillusioned with mondern blockbuster games. Big Budget, Shiny Packaging...no soul.
my older brother got me into that game when I was about 9. I'm a girl, and I've been in love with video games ever since, especially RPG's. **** yeah!
"WAS a great game, WAS being the key word. Dragon age is NOW so much better with Graphics, Romance and so on."
WAS a great game? What universe are you from? It's still the most immersive game out there. We're talking a game with more than 10 times more game time, the possibility of multiplayer and a wide arsenal of abilities for each class.
Regarding graphics, yes, Dragon Age is better in that regard, but a role playing game doesn't need eye candy.
Romance is at par with dragon age, the so called sex scenes is nothing but foreplay and might as well not have been there. In fact it would be better if it wasn't
Baldurs Gate 2 simply the best. I'm talking about the best story line, plus nearly unlimited combinations of class when even most games nowadays cann't even compare with. Even with the old graphic but I love it much more than any rpg games nowadays. They look nice but boring to stick with after a long time playing.
WAS a great game, WAS being the key word. Dragon age is NOW so much better with Graphics, Romance and so on.
Hah, Beat this game over and over and over, yet im always back creating a new character, new party possibilities, and there is always a quest i havent done or a piece of a puzzle i never completed. The BEST pc RPG of all time. it wouldnt let any slightly competent rpg fan down. Amazing story and fun filled characters. tons ans tons of quests, and neverending character creation capabilities.
surely the best game I ever played... with its huge world and locations to explore, fantastic items to find and very realistic conversations... the battles were awsome, as harder fights really needed a strategy, as well as usual portion of potions and magical stuff... 10 out of ten... love it
Baldur's Gate 2 - IMO, the best game of all time.
The immersive story. The interface. The epic feel and size. The humor. The challenge.
Pondering how to win a just-lost battle.
Sadly, someone lauded Deus Ex, comparing it favorably to BG2 (Deus Ex was terrible - I uninstalled it after less than an hour - only game I have ever requested a refund for - very poor interface).
BG2 is 1 of only two single player RPGs I have replayed all the way through.
I wonder whether there will ever again be a game as epic and all-around well done.
I may go start a game now.
Character devolopment was good and each DID have a different character plot/story ... Mass effect had character "Devlopment" but it couldnt realy be changed. and it felt like the only "change" you could do was via becoming there lover. Honestly you felt more like a Gigilo then a hero half the time in that game.
I completed this game many times. I played every famous RPGs for last 15 years and in my point of view this is best rpg ever. This kind of "open world" (except part with spellkeep) rpg with very solid storyline is very rare. Another great thing is many, long and complicated sidequests and very believable characters long but not boring playthrought (5 times or more then modern RPGs).
I remember this game especially for it's story and characters. This must the first RPG which really got into my mind, my heart even.
The story is epic. It is just like a very good book.
The tactics and gameplay are just as epic as well.
And I like all of it's details. The fact for example you could hear the caster mumbling "Vita, Mortis, Careo" when chanting a necro spell or something like that, it made the experience so great for me :)
I like details :)
You don't have to be a genius to finish the game, but there are some battles in there where the feeble minded will fail :)
I haven't played this since many many years, but now that I'm thinking of it again, I'm going to install it again.
Cheers
now THAT was a game!
(unlike those nasty wannabe Champions of Norrath spinoffs for the ps2 DarkAlliance?)
oh lord...you had to use tactics!!!and all that s**t...
and then the goblin comes along, scoring a critical on your caster and then...
heck, you even could DIE!!! PERMANENTLY!!!
FOR EVER!! no shield recovery...
sniff... they just dont make em like that anymore....
Absolutely the best game, ever, on any console and in any genre. It was the first RPG I ever played and it basically wrecked my RPGing life because I could never find another game that was nearly as good. Icewind Dale I and II, Morrowind, Arcanum, Neverwinter Nights, even Baldur's Gate I, all good games, but not even close to BG II.
Best FRP game ever because of its TRUE frp skills and actual DnD Rules. I remember spending hours on character creation screen.
Baldur's gate 2 is more or less the pinnacle of PC RPG, this game packs everything an rpg gamer loves. you will engage in countless epic battles, watch your characters develop incredibly powerful abilities and interesting relationships, follow the enthralling storyline, search for gold, treasure and tons of unique items. The game world is rich and diverse, combat is fierce, dialogues are witty and fresh and the characters are amongst the most memorable you will encounter.
Guess i put like one year of my youth into this game. SO WORTH IT!
The best of the best, why? It has great voice acting, and a suberbly defined villain. I could never hate Irenicus, what he was talking about in the dream sequences were so true. And the Tanaari You meet in the hell, awesome voice acting they sounded truly dark and deceptive, not some childish dark voice like "raargh i am a disgusting demon i will eat hour heart hahaha.." which we see in modern games.
The artwork, my goodness, those 2D backgrounds are much better than any 3D scene I have ever seen.
The Liveliness, the cities, people, quests were so live.
The unexpected events, the game always surprised me almost every quest had an interesting story behind it, even "go fetch this" quests turned out to be so much more. E.G. Kangaxx, Firkraag, The circus tent, planar sphere, thieves guild rivalry, watcher's keep, cult of the blind, dreams, interactions with deceptive demons and more and more and more...
Now Bioware makes a game (DAO Everyone) full of blood and slow motion sequences and calls it an rpg, please BIOWARE don't. I do not want Bioware to become Bethesda.
Baldurs Gate 2 was definatly the deepest rpg game ever created..
But thats just a distant memory..
RIP : Black Isle studios
k, i'm sorry, but BG1 is simply way better than 2. I still fondly remember the guy threatening to jump off the cliff and you casually responding with 'ok..' :) BG2 after act2 suddenly became very linear, forcing you on some chase with no way of returning to the original map - your mage fortress or whatnot to store equipment.
still searching for a RPG that will give the taste of this game , it is such a shame all new games focus on fancy 3d renders and glimmering lights , where as the true heart of the story is what a gamer seeks
All you have to do is say "BIOWARE" and you got yourself a great game...
i have played long ago but still remember this game. just sharing my tricks while played this.. #1 there's one stage (maybe 2 or 3 before the final) where your exp wil reduce after you do something (sorry-i forgot). if you continue to repeat that and the penalty reduce your exp below exp margin (to previous level) than you'll reach-totally -level 40. you can set your dual class chr to max set up.
#2 nothing could beat a party w/ a druid (or two) who has mass insect spell (forgot the nam).
#3 playing in multiplayer mode with LAN .. :)
This is actually the greatest single-player RPG ever made. I seriously doubt it will ever be equaled unless Bethesda stops tooling their games for the kids.
Fallout, Morrowind and Oblivion are all great games. As was Daggerfall (ME and KOTOR are only special because of their stories and don't belong on this list). But, BG2 just obliterated them all.
of first 40 titles i played all of them ( i know im a no lifer ) and this should be number one. dragon age is awesome new rpg and it can compare in worlf size even quest quality and quantity. but its still behind in all the art work baldur gates has to offer.
The Lord of Murder shall perish, but in his doom he shall spawn a score of mortal progeny, chaos will be sown by their passage
seer Alaundo
NO. 1 RPG
yer good backup to the first, but i honestly thought baldurs gate 1 was better, it was the first i ever played and probley the best.
Great RPG!
There are dozens of features to like in Baldurs Gate 2.
Several people have already commented on most of them.
Strangely enough, there is one characteristic of Baldurs Gate that i have not saw remembered: i refer to the faithfullness and completeness with wich the game recreated the D&D experience!
I had never played the real D&D at the time when i started playing the Baldurs Gate Saga, and, by the time i finished it, i could consider myself relatively experienced in the D&D world.
Quite impressive!! And i never saw such a feature repeted in another RPG...
No contest, the best RPG ever made! The true test of any RPG is its ability to be played again (and enjoyed) after the first time through. Very few RPG's achieve this, but Baldurs Gate 2 does. What it might lack in modern graphics it more than makes up for with storyline and characters. It is still kept fresh for veterans like myself by the multitude of fan based mods and extra's that are available.
This games should be in the 10th place -.-
It's not even that great at all
I played dozen of RPG before Baldurs Gate, and dozen after. Baldurs Gate remain the very best. By far!
RPGs published before had the problem of scarce computing
power, hence the 'inadequate' grafic; more or less all RPGs published in the late 90's and after, however, simply tend to be too little of a challenge...
Baldurs Gate is in the sweet spot!!
The best RPG ever made.
Most RPG Bioware made after this can be better on single aspects (graphics, story, combat system, choiches, etc...), but this is the BEST all around rpg!
hmm sorry, God knows I 've tried to get into this game on more than one occasion ( and im not hung up on graphics - currently playing Fallout 1.) but I completely disagree with its number 1 slot. Very overrated. Clunkie controls and annoyingly fiddly execution. The humour i witnessed was pretty childish.
So top slot for me would go to either
for atmosphere. STALKER s.o.c, (shame the other 2 stalker games that followed lost their way.) If you are going to try stalker soc there is now a large community patch to also enhance that.
* for not feeling like i was being treated like a 6 year old - THE WITCHER enhanced or GOTHIC 3 enhanced edititions. and anybody that whines about the gothic combat controls is a moron or want s god-like powers within 2 nanoseconds of creating a character. Gothic Night of the Raven, Oblivion, and Shadowrun (SNES) remember that old gem? all close runners up.
number 1??? Played it for the first time last night and was hugely disappointed. It has to be the most over rated game ever since everyone raves about it yet I couldn't play it longer then an hour. And playing it that long was a chore! I cant believe it was released in 2000, the same year that FFIX (over all incredible from the visuals to the story to the ability system, flawless game), Chrono Cross (tons of character, best soundtrack ever, multiple endings, pure awesome), Vagrant Story (possibly the best RPG ever made), Deus Ex (pure awesome), Grandia 2 (still one of the best combat systems ever created). Bulders Gate just seemed so archaic in comparison, just couldn't get into it.
Oh come on guys... BGII was the first RPG I ever played. It's still my favourite to this day. It takes real skill to survive on INSANE difficulty lol
as I stated under Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance, this was one of the four in the same family I played for hous and for years. Baldurs Gate 1, Champions of Norrath, and Champions: Return to Arms are the other three. Champions games are basically identival in concept and gamrplay, but with different graphics texture. They are all made with Snowblind Studios and Wizards of the Coast being their common developers. Baldurs Gate 2 has 5 instead of 3 main characters, as well as two unlockables, with Drizzt Do'Urden, the Drow Elf, Being one, which was also an unlockable in BG 1. The game story is longer and the map is wider than it was in 1, but somehow, it didnt have the same flow as 1, and it is a little stiffer, almost cheaper, than the first. My opinion is 1 is a tad better, but then again, I think many would disagree, since BG 1 at Gamestop sells for .99 cents now, and BG 2 is still $40.00 used and difficult to find. If you didnt like it as much as 1, I would certainly keep it in your collection, it will be worth more than 1 many years down the road, especially if you sell 1 with it.
Nice game. The optional quests are pretty adictive, and the number of diferent classes garantee you will get each time a new experience. It is very challenging and the different monsters demand you to change your strategy for each oponents. One downside in my opinion it is annoying to play multiple characters, in order to play correctly you gotta pause game all the time and this makes it annoying, and ressurrecting is so boring I just load game when you lose 1 of your characters. You can choose to play it with just one character anyway.
Still occasionally play it now - Go for the eyes Boo, go for the eyes! A better game there has never been. Hundreds of hours playing with multiple characters, completing the BG trilogy and hours experimenting with the many mods and expansions from Sorcerers place, Weidu and Gibberlings3. The best RGP, the holy trinity and bench mark on which all others are based. The Tolkein of the gaming world and the best string of quotes.
I cannot be caged! I cannot be controlled! Understand this as you die, ever pathetic, ever fools.
BG2 is the best RPG I've played, epic tour de force. Bioware's crowning achievement. Romance, humor, puzzles, great dialogue, character development... The art and music are so rich. Great multiplayer too - shopping together, unleashing ancient demon oopsies, it's all there!
Lol, BG2 at place 21??
BG1+2, Fallout 1+2, Planescape Torment and Morrowind. These are the best RPG's ever made.
And only one of them is in the top 10 a.t.m..
Instead we find games like Venetica, Torchlight and Fable in the top 10.
People realy don't know their classics anymore.
This list can't be taken serious, what a farce.
amazing game i was lost i it for weeks, kept me on the edge of my seat during its entirety.
I played both Baldur's Gates through all 4 years of High School, then again through College, and just finished my third run through. Play both if you can but if you really want to find yourself in the most well thought out universe and story, play BG
Playing it again in 2010, after playing Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age. No Comparison, BG2 is the best RPG ever... so freakin' big!
2.
Comments:
compared to most of the gems under DA:O in this poll, there's only one thing left to say: DA:O really sucks!!!!
Now this is a great RPG,of course its not better than Gothic,Elder Scrolls or Witcher series, but still one of the best,i hope the 3rd will come faster on the market.
DA :O = shock and awe
DA II = a real let down
DA III: I = coming soon
this is a epic game but the second was rubbish i just hope they learned by now and the third will be worth playing just like DA is
DAO is the best game(not only rpg) i ve ever played. When i play it i feel like i m in a totally different world. The deepness of this game cant be described with simple words. Amazing story, design, character. I cared for my companions like real friends. The combat is magnificent. I dont care that some ppl say the combat is slow and unfun. Actually in my opinion its 100 times better than the mindless action in DA 2. Haters gonna hate but my opinion is that Baldur's gate is overrated. As a sworn gamer my opinion is that the best rpgs are:
1.DAO
2.The witcher saga
It is a good game, and a good RPG, but I do not believe it is worthy of number 3, not when there are much better games that are far more original, like Arcanum, sitting in number 4, if Arcanum is only 4, than DA:O should be number 7.
No! It wasn't that good, even boring. Not on number 3, pleeeaaase!!! It's far too linear for being a good RPG, character-building is not that good (reminds me of WoW, and that's not good)!
one of the best prg ever definitely in the first 5 the only minus about this game is that they didnt made it longer
One of the very last great tactical RPGs that we are likely to see. I am a console gamer (can't afford a good PC) so I played this on Xbox. I was totally amazed that BioWare even attempted to release a tactical, party based throwback like this in a console port. I have played the entire Mass Effect series, and they are decent for the most part, but in my opinion this was the last great BioWare game. It has it all - non-linear play, depth of narrative, lively characters, deep and tactical combat, and most importantly for me, it makes you feel like you have the freedom to affect the world of the game. The silent protagonist was great and the allowed choices in dialogue covered all of the bases. Some of the writing is quite witty, though overall it is pretty standard for a sword & sorcery type game. I got the Ultimate Edition for around $10, it inlcudes all DLC released for this game and it is without a doubt the best money I have spent on a console game in a long time. The greatness of this game only makes BioWare's chosen path that much more frustrating and disappointing. DA2 and ME3... need I say more?
I'm relatively new to RPG I would be shocked if DAO wasn't in the top ten s it had both great story lines and best of all were the compelling characters which significantly enhanced to game.
DAO is not linear. your choice does impact the outcomes. In many cases, you perform an action/or choice in this game, eventually the game will give an reference to respond your action through dialogs or actual outcome. well, it's not a open-ended game like fallout 2 since it means to tell a story. DAO is much like KOTOR in game design.
(Comment directed to comment below) Although you could visit towns again, even the slighest bit of effort in questing upon arrival meant that there was little to no point returning (a handful of very weak exceptions aside). DA:O IS Linear. FFXIII was what we term "unrelentedly railroading" which is even more severe still. Fallout and Baldur's Gate opened and closed quests depending upon how you approached interactions (beyond "yes" or "no") and in Fallout 2 there was genuine reward to returning to previously visited towns. Added to the fact that the enemies level up with you, the game is one of those that fakes non-linearity behind a very thin smokescreen of choice. Indeed, the smokescreen of choice metaphor describes many of DA:O's problems.
just to add one thing, i think peoples description of linear differs from one person to the next. my definition of linear game play is something like FF13, you couldn't really visit towns again once you passed through one it was locked. with DA:O, you could visit almost every place again, the exception being lothering. i wouldn't say DA:O is linear at all.
Best game ever bar none. b4 i played DA:O my fave rpg was FF10 but i just think DA:O was better by a small margin. i mean 6 origin stories to begin with, then 4 possible endings. and lets not forget the climax battle in Denerim i mean how you play the game dictates what kind of allies aid you in the final onslaught. add to that the non-linear game play and the companion relationships and romances. i mean come on there may have been a few problems with it, but they were only cosmetic. if there was an rpg heaven i'm sure fereldan and thedas would be it. this was the first game i ever played where i felt guilty about the wrong choices i made within it. unless DA:3 turns out to be a better game than origins. it looks like origins will be my fave for much longer.
Right from the start the game I had a feeling of "pieces fitting together", perfectly. Long dialogues in the party camp, party banters while adventuring and beatifully composed music were superb in every aspect to anything I had seen before. It was hard to believe such a game actually existed and I enjoyed every moment of it. No other game has given me such satisfaction and probably ever will. No other game has made me actually cry before the end, or given me the sensation of a true victory while besting the final encounter in the game.
First time when the credits started to roll I remember just staring at my screen, 5 am, a half bottle of scotch sitting next to a pack of cigarettes - just two being left. After 50+ hours it was over. I went outside to have a smoke and I realized: Never again would I beat the game for the first
time. There would never be this kind of experience for me - Never again. The peak for my gaming was there. Never to be reached again.
Make of that what you will, but one thing is for sure: no reason for these other games to hold better places than Dragon Age: Origins is good enough. After an experience like this it's impossible to review this game like other games. This isn't just game. This a part of my life I remember with the same warmth, than any other event that has happened to me in real life worth remembering. To witness a piece of fiction, meant for amusement, like this to see the light of day in my time gives me hope that such superficial feeling of happiness mixed with sadness can perhaps once be crafted again.
Someone said this:
"Dragon Age was the most immersive RPG I have ever played. It has ruined all other games for me, and by that I mean everything else feels lacking in comparison."
I feel you bro, I feel you.
Hands down greatest rpg I've every played. I have Witcher 1 (couldn't stomach the combat), Witcher 2 (prob second fav) Neverwinter (too D&Dish), Oblivion (bland story line with weird faces). I was emotionally connected to this game. Too bad DA2 felt lonely compared to this game. In fact, DA2 was horrific; I still haven't beat it and I may never try.
So much better than the second one, this game is my god. i could care less about first person shooters. its games like this that keep me from giving up. i was getting ready to shed the gaming title to be away from the dumb down generation of pure action games when all of a sudden amazing story lines graphics and game play slapped me across the face with everything i love about being a nerd. I still play the game and have spent over 300 hours admiring the fact that its actually a strategy game and admiring zevrens firm backside
One of Bioware's better recent games, but still suffers from some of their modern pitfalls, like bare bones side quests (from message boards, no less) and repetitive environments. Combat is solid, characters are strong, and some of the choices actually matter.
A great game. Bioware's best effort since BGII. I have a greater fondness for KOTOR, but I think DA:O is probably the better game. Despite its fantasy cliches, Bioware managed to craft a distinct and compelling gameworld and mythology. The story, characters, and quests are all quite good, some are outstanding. The plot itself, however, falters substantially as it nears the end, and the fight with the Archdemon wasn't quite the epic I anticipated.
One of the best RPG games I have played! The Combat system is different than others, because its harder and tactical, so finally you have to use your brains to beat the coblin.. I mean enemy :D And the story was simpple, but very intresting! The game was long too, played it two weeks, containing side quests and main story. By the way, I dont want to spoil your waitings, the end battle Archdemon was disapointing :( I though it would be harder.. But overall: Best RPG ever made!
Linear, predictable. A simple tranposition of the Warhammer engine with less freedom and missing the point it was created for. Waste of disk space
Shouldn't be this high on the list. Maybe around 15-20... Its a sellout game made for the dumber generation thats all there is to be said about it... "spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate" my ass
Good Game but not replayable - tried to play 2nd time and got bored after 2-3 hours, because you already know what will happen and what skills all classes have (from your companions).
Yo, Dragon Age: Origins, I'm really happy for you and ima let you finish, but Knights of the Old Republic was one of the greatest games of all time! Seriously, This game is great, beautiful, had cool classes, excellent customization, nice animations - in short, I can say nothing bad about it. But 6 out of 230 and placed above games like Mass Effect and KOTOR? The first word in RPG is "role," as in "character" and "story." The story in this game is good, but I played through it twice a few years back and I really don't remember it well. I will NEVER forget the feelings that the stories in some of the other games in this list gave me - games like Escape Velocity Nova and Geneforge. I know that those are largely unknown, but Mass Effect is not. I will never forget Shepard. And KOTOR? The only moment in entertainment history better for me than the revelation of Revan is that of Luke Skywalker's paternity. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I don't understand the ones on this board. Maybe I'm from a different generation than most here, but what guy born in the last four decades doesn't secretly want to be a Jedi. They probably exist, but my guess is that they aren't sitting around leveling their blood mage. Even KOTOR 2 (a game that had better gameplay and customization than its predecessor, but was inferior not because it was incomplete, but because it couldn't escape the shadow Revan cast) should be above DAO. Peace and good gaming, whether you play good games like DAO or truly epic ones...Aaron
Probably not the worst PC rpg ever...
I tried playing it 2 times and, beside its insane difficulty even on the lowest diff setting, predictible characters, the only thing that was worth considering was the char customization, which other games lack, but again, there are are much better ones out there, even this aspect considering, too.
Maybe the best part about this game is the publicity the media made around it. :D
sorry ill have to spoil a bit...
i liked the game when it came out, being the inheritor to BG(yeah, right) and all that.
and even with that in mind, it was still amazingly good! i mean really great!
especially the prolouge for different races etc....
even the difficulty was ok(i played at hardest...)
the story was, well... tastes are different...
and you had to actually read through the backstory in your journal or you missed a lot (but then it was ok again)
and the kotor like involvement with the companions...i mean, the gay elf?! that takes big cojones to take place in a videogame. and even if you hate gays(or elfs;)) he was one of the coolest chars since long.
but still... there was no 'big unknown world' to explore and the rest wasnt that dense to make up for it.
game mechanics (levelingup) were a bit too cheap for a real RPGer.
you could tell from seeing the npc if it gave you a quest...(i really hate that in todays games...a lot)
and you wouldnt want to play it again anytime soon...there is not too much to be seen aside from the road.
And also you cant blame DOA for the DLCs politricks....or the so called addon or the HORRIBLE sequell(SHAMEEEE)
so it is very good... for a 3d game:)
it saved rpgs' reputation.
Simply the best - even better than FFIX, Grandia, or Baldur's Gate. You owe it to yourself to play this one.
pretty much best PC rpg since Baldur's gate II. Dragon age origins is hugely reminiscent of Baldur's Gate II in gameplay. the witty writings, rich characters, interactions and puzzles really draw myself back to Baldur's gate II. the interactive cinematic in the game is highly inspired by kotor, but this is not a bad thing since keeping everybody happy is still important. DAO shows a new way combining modernized tactical combat, dramatic story telling, and involving characters together to form a true return of classics.
K great game played it and beat it and im not one for story but i couldnt stop and i loved every minute but graphics were awkward at times
I have just noticed, that greatness of DA was particularly stolen from other projects. For example, Orzammar is almost Ironforge, dwarves story is similar to dwemers' one, and those ones corrupted by "Shadow Bastards" (idk their eng title) are rather similar to corprus patients. That's only about a part in DA that impressed me most. And the gameplay: when I tried it out, the first thing I thought was about single-player WoW. No doubt, the game is quite good, but really consists of many things that are already invented.
P.S. sorry for my elglish :)
Great storyline and game concept, but not much content toward the ending. Very impressed with the amount of work they poured into the different starting paths and the random companion dialogue.
Overrated, lacks freedom, Depth, yes I said lacks Depth. It's a good game, but compared to others in this list I found it to be a second rate hack and slash with RPG elements added. I'm not one of these AMIGA RPGs were the best, anything new that other players have played SUCKS fat nerds. I'm a let's try it and see type fat nerd lol. It's carried largely by cutscenes without those you've got a second rate game. But It does have those and they're well done. I'd rate this as a top 10-15 all time rpg. Not higher. In 5 years you'll be lucky to see this in the top 10.
Agree with all about storyline and the characterisation is great ... but we are supposed to be talking role play here unfortunately the storyline is everything and the conversations become less interesting after first play. Limited number of locations which do not re-spawn in my opinion not a patch on Elder Scrolls, and to think that it comes from the same stable as the Baldurs Gate games suggests that maybe they are now programming for consoles.
this games is outstanding its beautiful its like having sex with jessica alba
This game is my favorite game and is also one of the best games ever. Almost everything is perfect (By my standards) I enjoyed the story and your choice of race and their backgrounds. But like any game there are some problems luckily these are minor and are only noticeable after multiple plays.
1) The game is linear in the sense that you always need to get arl eamon, the mages (or at least go through the tower the same) as well as doing the same thing in denerim with little change each time.
2) The game does leave you scratching your head when you first find out your character is mute unlike another bioware game Mass Effect 2
3) Mages though it does fit the lore of the game are overpowered. I did enjoy playing as one mainly because it was fun to freeze everyone then set them on fire so they would stay still and burn.
A way to improve this game in my opinion would be to make each group you visit more reactive. For example if you visit the elves first then the mages or dwarfs reacted to you differently or if you left to get the mages to do the ritual to save connor had you not saved the mages before going to redcliff then there would be a chance that connor would destroy the castle and you wouldn't be able to get the redcliff army. This i believe would be a much more interesting story because depending on who you visit first it effects what will happen.
(Continued) It had a gripping story and it was one of the few games that I didn't find the romances to detract from the plot. Even the graphics were stunning if you turned them up to the highest settings. Out of all the extraordinary things that I could stress about this game, number one would be -immersion-. I can't recall ever getting so completely and helplessly absorbed in a game before. You won't find a better game unless you abandon the electronics and sit down with a group for a good old-fashioned self-designed game of D&D. This game also has amazing replay value because of the numerous side quests and character back-stories. I would highly recommend this game to anyone over the age of 18. If there are parents reading these comments looking for a game for their kids, the game is rated mature for a reason. There is plenty of cinematic violence and just as many dark or adult themes in the dialogue. The sexual scenes are less scandalous than most R rated movies, so no concerns there. A mature teenager would be fine with this game, but I would guess that it's aimed at 20s and up. On the whole, it is a truly wonderful game. I have no qualms about giving it a 10/10 on everything.
The characters felt like they could walk out of the screen and into your living room; their personalities were just that believable. The moral choice system and dialogue were superb. I can only think of two or three times that I wanted to ask something that wasn't a dialogue option. Even then, they were questions I only thought to ask from a CCJ/ Forensic Chem background and not anything that was necessary to the game (well, and I thought of a few cheesy pick up lines, but we'll forget about those.) There were genuine moral dilemmas included in the game that frequently required careful consideration and delicate handling. And remember the days of hanging on your first love's every word so you could surprise them with that perfect gift? Well, use those skills, 'cause you'll want to pay attention to the details of the script for each of the characters because you'll need to pull up those facts later. The combat system was friendly to new players and delightfully difficult on the upper settings. If you don't like thinking about strategy than I don't advise progressing past the normal setting.
Dragon Age was the most immersive RPG I have ever played. It has ruined all other games for me, and by that I mean everything else feels lacking in comparison.
the hero doesn't speek...no hear no voice from him...it become really boring....its like you watching people talk for hours....hate it
If this game was rated on graphics and storyline, I would rate it about five. But for playing the game it is very much like watching a DVD movie and selecting which scene to play next. I enjoyed Oblivion IV and was hoping this game would play along the same line. This game is very predictable and requires little involvement from you. I'm very disappointed it wasn't for me.
I don't feel involved at all with my character and the story which is kinda the point of an rpg. Also the combat is far to simple and easy even on nightmare. On the plus side it's better than Mass Effect. I used to love Bioware but they are crushing my faith in them with each new release.
A decent console port, but cannot compare to BG2. Can't compare to Morrowind or Oblivion either, honestly. This, Mass Effect and Kotor are abysmal "games". They are WONDERFUL stories, but without those stories, these games would sell about as well as horseradish tacos.
Bioware makes wonderful stories, but they no longer have the slightest interest in making wonderful games.
this game is second? WTH? This isn´t even a good, nor long. took me 30+ with all the best equipment and bosses killed. battling is boring, the world is pretty small, and the main quest is really lame."
LOL, you didn't even come close to beating the game within 30 hours, I can guarantee that. Even if it was possible, you'd still miss out on 60% of the content you end up skipping, which all has mini stories of their own.
It's okay to hate though. Really, it is, because there's not many games on the same level as Dragon Age.
"Worst character advancement system I have seen for years in the RPG world. Any modern hack & slash does it better. Shameful level scaling system, only Oblivion does it worst in the matter. Good storyline however, though very classic and linear, nice graphics and decent dialogues and romance."
Holy ****, are you serious? Really? Worst character advancement system you've seen in years, and hack and slash games do it better? ROFL! Hack and slash games don't even HAVE character advancement! Your character is typically the exact same at the end of the game as it is at the beginning!
Linear? LOL! Really? I guess if having the option to tackle the story in any order you want is indeed linear.
Good lord, sometimes I wonder where some people get their info, and if they've ever even played some of these games, especially Dragon Age.
I will admit, Dragon Age is fairly slow paced. The whole joining the Wardens thing, and that first blight battle is kind of drawn out, slow, and all in all not even necessary as its the most boring part of the game, but once you get beyond that the game is what you make of it. Want to help the elves first? Go ahead, it's your choice. Rather go to the Mage tower and seek help from the Mages first? It's your call! The story is extremely dynamic and unfolds differently for every person.
THE BEST GAME EVER... not just the best RPG, it is the best of them all
DA is good, but suffers from some significant flaws. Positives? DA "feels" right. It conjures up a solid fantasy world, its cliches feel comforting rather than painful, and it throws in its fair share of darkness on a superficially sugary setting. When you reach the tail end of a dungeon, there is usually something pretty grim waiting, and it by turns horrifies and satisfies. DA's story is good, no question, and features the best party personality of any Western/PC RPG. The way you interact with your companions, and, crucially, the way they interact with each other, makes you feel like they are more than just a bunch of stats. They are also incredibly funny. Not in a slapstick way, but in a very dry, human and plausible fashion that makes them deeply likeable. It doesn't conflict with the darkness of the story, but makes the world seem real. These factors, combined with decent character advancement, made me think during my first playthrough that DA was truly special. Then the flaws crept in. DA's combat is at best simple. The classes look different, but ultimately mana/stamina do the same thing and you'll be using those same standard attacks for most of the game. This, however, is the jab to be followed up by a haymaker of a flaw. For 95% of the game, DA's enemies level with the player. The whole process of levelling up is - ultimately - completely pointless. Then, when you realise how little input you actually have, DA reveals itself as little more than an interactive novel. The world map is terrible and seems only present to give a false sense of sandbox. On older systems, DA's graphics, damage and mechanics can separate when the CPU is pushed. As far as I can tell, if the slow-down gets too bad, enemies will keep on attacking (and being attacked) after they have taken enough damage to die. Pray you don't encounter it. Dragon Age contained enjoyable features but as a successor to BG it falls woefully short. ------06/10-------
it feels like a watching a movie, nice acting
but the gameplay is limited
I did actually like oblivion a bit more, but this game was very fine. I found myself feeling actual loyalty to some of the characters, and pondered every dialogue choice very carefully thinking for the best army to pick. While sometimes its hard to figure out, which makes it a bit boring, but i loved it.
10 on all except freedom, 9 for that because no random exploring, but i suppose freedom of dialogue made up for that.
Though there are definitely classics out there, this game just blew my mind off... fantastic. I lost myself, found myself getting involved with all characters. The sideway missions are fun and interesting, the choices you make in sideway missions effect the story overall, the main story itself might just be a tad bit cliche but because there are so many different ways the story can bend because of your choices it still gives a great variety. Favorite.
I Really thought that it wasn't that good, it seemed to have copied some parts from oblivion, the story wasn't that great, and it wasn't an open ended game.
It felt like a rip off of every other rpg that came before it.
Played this game longer than any other game in the last 15 years, enough said...
The ONLY gripe i have with this game is that you couldnt just go around and level up like crazy over and over again. ALL the monsters once you kill them are GONE. FOREVER. So basically once u beat the game ur done sitting there looking at your sweet armor WISHING you could still kill something.....
cant say there is much good about it, i hear everyone say how good it is but its just so boring to me, couple of my buddies said it was like KOTOR, definitely not, clearly just not the game for me, wouldnt mark it down though, im just an elderscrolls/fallout kind of girl i guess
epic story, epic consequences, epic sound, epic violence, epic end boss, epic graphics.
Worst part about this game is that it ends.. wish it could go on forevr
This game should be longer. First i played about 60% of the game and got bored.A month later i started a new game, finished with best equipment and high dragon killed, and almost all sidequests in 35 hours.
to add to my previous comment, the way you can make moral choices and get on peoples good or bad sides is fun. play it once as an evil arcane warrior+ blood mage, play again as good arcane warrior+ spiirit healer, play it again as a nuetral reaver+champion that only cares about the women, and WAY WAY WAY more. THE best rpg to date no questions asked
just awesome. the ultimate edition was amazing. sexy women, badass finishing moves, epic armor, quests and storyline. bioware is just a boss. smokes oblivion and morrowind combined. 7 times better (at least) than the fallout series. i was awestruck at the sight i had at the amazing graphics. I also love the character creation sequences and the different story lines.
^^^^^^^You are crazy. I've played a lot of games, if you follow all of the quests, it is mathematically impossible to beat the game in 30 hours. Just not possible. If you add the expansions, excluding awakening, it should take you 70 hours no less. I am on my second play through and I'm 50% through the game, I don't die, and I know where everything is. No way man.
this game is second? WTH? This isn´t even a good, nor long. took me 30+ with all the best equipment and bosses killed. battling is boring, the world is pretty small, and the main quest is really lame.
One of the few newer RPGs that is in the same league as the games of the infinity era.
This was a very long game. It was supposed to be 80 - 100 hours, but I beat it in 60 I believe and that was with completing 90% of the game. I can't say that there wasn't too many comparisons between the game and Lord of the Rings, but this was probably LOR for adults. Very immersive game with 10s across the board. I only give storyline a 9 because it was predictable for me. Some may not agree with that but it was put together well and it kept me sucked in for a while.
guys first of all if you think this is hard right first of all is if you have a ps3 like i do get demon's souls kinda like this game but sooooooooo hard
I'm playing this, definately well made game but I find the battles boring and I just somehow can't buy these generic-character storyline. My character really acts like he was actually born at the time I created him which makes it kinda artificial.
It is MY FAVOURITE rpg so far. I can't believe some people
Regret it. I have completed this game several times and I strongly recommend everyone to try NIGHTMARE level. Only then will you enjoy the game and feel it worthwhile
Best RPG game on the market.Played it several times.Loved all the mods that can be added
I wont do a full review here, but ill adress a couple of things. Firstly, considered by many critics and the majority of the gaming culture as one of the best RPGs of all time. And thats not a joke, and you can contest it as much as you want. Go look at the game review sites, such as IGN, or Gamespot, to name a couple.
Overall this game sucks you in, makes you its B*&^h and you love it for doing so. Totally amazing game. Way to go BioWare.
Its not the best rpg, but its not that bad. The story is somewhat good/decent, but the way its told is exquisite, wonderfull, you can feel in the game, I havent lost mineself in a game in a loong long time, sometimes story can be great, but when its not told correctly, it can be crappy. The combat system isnt revolutionary but its executed so fluidly, so awesome its just soo great, so much fun, sometimes i redo some fighting parts. The rpg parts are your typical, nothing new but they are very interesting and fun. This game is so great because it came in the best time it could get, RPG games are so scarce these days that this typical average RPG is so greatly executed, sooo darn good refined, its just one of the best games in the last decade, its like it went straigtht from heaven in these dark times of FPS bullcrap with shiny graphics. I just missed those typical average old school RPGs...Im enjoying this game soo much, but surely its not the best RPG ever. But it deserves the praise...except those bugs and the download content money making trick...
This game is not that great..the story is predictable..no matter what you choose in the dialogue...lack of unique armors and weapons..no part in the game that i felt frustration cause i cant go further.......Mario is harder than this
i really dont understan how anny1 can say that DA has a great story... comparing to witcher, or planscape this story is, well... i mean, it like a tv series packed in 6/8 episodes wher every1 has their probblems and you end up solving the... terible.. pretty decent fighting sistem thoug, beats witcher. but the witcher was much much much more machure, in amorality and brutality.
Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves andI cannot believe some of the comments I've read about this game. I've played almost every hit "RPG" out there and this one, by far, has been one of the best and most compelling game I have played. I loved everything about this game. I've heard numerous complaints about their graphics, but I suppose idiots still tend to focus on visuals than the actual depth of the storyline today. The decisions you're forced to make, the customization, the amount of time and effort that can be spent on this game. After this game, I literally wanted to cry because I didn't want the story to end. There's so much to offer and it leaves you wanting more. Not only that, but it leaves the game open to imagination; free interpretation. Definitely one of my favorite games, hands down.
I just finished it and it was the best, the storyline was great and graphics was also sweet; just cant wait for the sequel, Dragon Age 2!
While it doesn’t have the best visuals, Dragon Age: Origins puts many RPGs to shame. The complexity of the moral choices you make in this game is just one of the reasons why Origins is one of the best RPGs ever made. In many times while playing Dragon’s Age: Origin, I found myself putting the controller down for over five minutes (sometimes more) just wondering which moral choice I want to select in order to progress in the game. Add to this a great battle system, superb cast of characters, mind blowing customization options and a very long main quest and you will see why Bioware is the king of the genre.
This game has the worst combat and graphics. The story is very much linear and boring.
Worst character advancement system I have seen for years in the RPG world. Any modern hack & slash does it better. Shameful level scaling system, only Oblivion does it worst in the matter. Good storyline however, though very classic and linear, nice graphics and decent dialogues and romance.
Amazing storyline, beautiful graphics.
Only downside is lack of freedom to do some random exploration and dungeon crawling, which means that once you're done, you're done, making a second go around simply repetative.
best game ever...amazing...story...complex...and diverse characters...deserves...to be number 1.... :)
I suppose I did make the mistake of buying this for my 360. I don't doubt that it wasn't good. The consel was just a terrible transfer. It had an amazing story and good characters. Sten... Is still a badass. It just sucked for Xbox.
Best game I played so far next only to Planescape : torment in terms of storyline. (story, gameplay, graphics all TEN in my book) a must have for any gamer
3.
Comments:
if a game need mods to be good then it's not that great...leveling scale system on monsters totally ruined this game, also the item progresion was crap too...so easy to get glass, ebony, even daedric gear, when those items were supposedly hard to get and find.....
With the expansions and plug-ins becomes a little more enjoyable but i still have those monster who after some lvl the become all like some kind of gods, very hard to kill even with the best armours and weapons on you.
The greatest thing about this game is the arena where you can polish your skills before youre going out there in the dangerous world and where you can have some fun advancind in ranks and gaining fame and glory just great too bad that you cant take what the defeated enemies are droping.
Shame that the armor rating is limited with all those powerfull monsters and bandits they should have made it to several hundreds or so and where is the medium armors, shame about that too.
I agree, the story-plot and the charachter evolution isn't that great, but the vast world that can be explored in 3D and the guild quests are nice. besides, once you've maken a good choice for your character evolving and make it a part of the game it's really immersive. That's just my opinion of course..
The leveling system of the monsters ruined it every time i level up the monsters are becoming more powerful than me so the second time i played this game only with level 4 the entire game and was more enjoyable than the first time the lower level you are the better people anyway Morrowind is way better than this one
While this game was entertaining it lacks in so many ways that it doesn't deserve to be listed. Random crashes and a buggy system, Lack of in-depth character development, No conversational emotions, Terrible leveling system, I can't think of the name but the thing that decides what spawns where when and why. Oh and lets not forget that one of it's biggest bonuses is Mods which automatically makes me think the game is trash and it needs to be heavily modded to be worth playing.
This is definetly the best rpg ever. Even bethesta can not make a better one than this(led zeppelin cannot make another stairway to heaven). My point. Any case, Okay graphics, Best storyline, Nice combat, Nice Theme, Nice music(seriously Nice!). i can draw some dungeons from memory. This game has definetly been a part of my life...(On to the math)
I could get into all the technical differences between Oblivion and Morrowind since I played them both extensively. Between Morrowind and Oblivion, I can safely say that Morrowind is the better game because it simply felt more immersive. The strange thing is: I played Oblivion more. I found it more fun to play since the melee combat was changed to be based on aim rather than a dice roll. Yes, damage was still calculated with a dice roll, but impact on the target was based on aiming. Should Oblivion be 3rd on this list? Probably not. Should Oblivion be in the top 10? Most likely. It was a great game that I spent around 140 hours playing, but there are still better games that should be above it in the top 10.
the storyline didn't catch me
leveling up was useless because...thieves with wearing ebony armor??, yeah right...
the only good things were modding
and the freedom, and I don't know how people got so impressed of it, because freedom is the constant of TES, at least since morrowind
i enjoy wandering through this game so much its just a great and beautiful world
Nah, this game is much better than Skyrim; it's a real RPG! Skyrim is more a console based RPG for beginners. But it's through the plot isn't great and there aren't really significant choices.
Just a question: does no one find 'Divine Divinity' agood game?
One of most overrated and shallow games. Surely doesn't deserve to be in top10 rpg with its scarce plot and conversations... It runs on 10 years old schema... It bored me to death... Modders save this game somewhat but we shouldn't give credit to game for that... Also repetitiveness and bad combat system... Why its so popular... I don't know.. Must be brainless casual undemanding pop culture
hey, poster below me: idk where you got those words from, but i totally agree with you. in fact it may be the wisest thing said about that game on the internet...well, of what ive seen^^
+1
Skyrim is much better than this game, but neither of them really deserve to be in the top ten. Bethesda makes games that are a lot of fun in an exploratory sense, and they spend a great amount of time making their worlds into places that you want to spend dozens of hours walking around in. However, their writng is flat; the plotlines in all of their recent games are completely forgettable and linear. Also, their underlying mechanics in both character advancement and combat are extremely boring and shallow. If they could get a grip on their writing and combat they would be the crowned champions of the modern RPG, but I am still waiting for them to release that game.
After loads of linear JRPGs an open-ended RPG where you can ignore the main story and still have access to every portion of the map and also still have a meaningful experience with FUN involved. "side"-quests give structure to an otherwise directionless path. Yes everyone looks rather ugly but let's be honest--does anyone actually have a flawless anime face that's perfect in every way? My answer is no. I definitely do enjoy Oblivion currently and eventually Skyrim as well.
As a TES III fan I was expecting a equivalent experience with the IV chapter, but since the very beginning the game failed to capture my attention. A poor plot, a terrible introduction (you are the hero because I dreamed of you, so go and do things for you will save the world... WTF), too many quests one after the other (from the prison, before reaching the nearest city, I have been proposed 7 sub-quests XD). I forgot what I was doing. No, I uninstalled it. A little disappointed.
Oblivion is good, but definitely not the 3rd best PC RPG of all time. Hell, in terms of gameplay, even Daggerfall is better. Still, the leveling system cleaned was stream-lined nicely since Morrowind, the way enemies scale in power as you do makes the game entertainingly challenging at all levels, and it has some really pretty sights.
Plenty of quests to do. The FREEDOM is something unique to this great game, you don´t need to follow the main quest if you don´t want to, you can be a thief, a wanderer, you can even purchase your own house!
The way of learning skills is different too, I mean, most games when you choose to start as a warrior, you will be a warrior for the life. Not Oblivion. If you train magic, you can be a warrior/mage, if you train archery, you can be a warrior/archer. Its up to you really.
The combat is one of the best things of the game I think, although for some newcomers and people used to auto hit style will find it hard to master. You WILL miss spells and arrows with frequency. But there is always the difficulty slide bar for newcomers, until they get used to the combat style at least.
A thing that I didn´t really like: The enemies and items are bound to your level. If you´re low level you will get crappy gear and you will face goblins and imps. When high you will face giants and so on. While this might balance the game it may also unbalance it, because if you spent a lot of time doing speech skills or trading to level up, you might find yourself losing to a bunch of goblins that you beaten with ease yesterday, again the difficulty bar is probably the solution. Further about the items, the game makes it impossible for you to find a daedric in the beginning, and in the end, every generated npc will use it, making it common and unprized.
Anyway, Oblivion is a great game but without the addons it´s not even close to perfection. Use the addons(after you played the original for a while or else it will be too hard), and you see that your experience will be a lot better, with added realism and gameplay. For example: greater array and random monsters and items in dungeons not bound to your level, better combat with fatalities and timing, more quests and much, MUCH more.
I used to play oblivion, but then I took an arrow to the knee :/
Oblivion is possibly the finest walking simulator of all time. It contains a huge and beautiful world full of fantastic graphics and lush scenery. Even the dungeons look like someone has polished every cobble as you trawl through them. Flowers litter meadows as you wear out your boots walking and the entire thing is really like you're trekking across a fantasy realm.
The combat, of course, is completely dictated by where you position the difficulty slider at any point during the combat, levelling up is hopelessly easy but ultimately pointless (the whole thing can quite easily be done without ever levelling) and there is no emotional involvement or meaningful character interaction to speak of. An absolutely terrible RPG, but as a walking simulator, even better than Morrowind!
I invested so much time in this game and then just stopped playing it. Didn't finish it. Lost interest. I think it was the storyline -- it never sucked me in and seemed optional anyhow. And without a story to pull me forward, the random world exploration got old and I put in another game and never went back.
i've been playing rpg's since 1988.. i've played alot. One of the first games i played was an epic role playing game called Daggerfall, made by a small software company called bethesda softworks.. and i loved it.. the scope and the ambition were unmatched.. I also played the orginal fallout games and fell in love (although couldn't complete F2 due to bugs) and then, years later along comes Bethesda with OBLIVON.. love it, a huge world rich in not only graphics but content, an easy to master control system. A DEFINITE MUST FOR THE RPG GAMER.. then they bring out FALLOUT 3.. you can imagine my excitement.. that and new vegas have kept me busy enough until the release of skyrim. WELL DONE BETHESDA.. keep it up!
Lost some of the magic from Morrowind, which I personally rate higher, but still an amazing game, one of the few role playing games that actually involve ROLE PLAYING. Tons of exploration and choice in how you play it. I enjoyed this game immensely and sunk 140+ hours into it, but never finished the main quest.
whoa! this should be in top 5!! (just a personal opinion though, don't really like "dice roll and wait for your turn to attack" RPG :P) This game makes me wait for skyrim.. lol,, I hope they really improve everything in skyrim (I compared this and fallout 3.. both are kinda sucks in characters movement... n still continue in fallout new vegas.. T_T) LOVE OBLIVION
I loved Oblivion, but I feel like all of my characters looked like they had down syndrome.. can't wait for Skyrim!
all the elder scroll games are great but too easy to make your character into a god not enough powerful creatures still cant wait to play skyrim
THIS is probably the most overrated RPG in the universe. Not even worthy of the top 50. Only kids could say this is the best game ever.
One of the most overrated games in the last two decades. Poor animations, crappy voice acting, boring quests and story and lots of repetitive dungeons. Its funny how marketing can turn an average title into a blockbuster.
Bethesda makes great settings with tons of detail- Enormous worlds that are fun to explore. Unfortunately when it comes to writing a captivating story they fail every time and to top it off they have the worlds worst voice actors. I imagine they spend their whole budget for voicing on one or two talented actors like Patrick Stewart or Liam Neeson. Then the rest of the games hundreds of npc are voiced by like 5 people- and honestly, most of their "no name" voice actors/actresses are just pathetic. The stories are always terrible, but you can mod the game to be like whatever you want. The modability of the TES games is easily their best strength.
It's a good game but after a while you get bored doing same quests. level system is poor. don't like the fact that same monsters are always stronger than you, no matter what level you are. bullcrap
i've done the game for the first time for 1 night being lvl 2 fighter. Bored to death, i shut the game never again to open.
ok, to the post above, obviously you were an incredibly low level, because i've modded out a deadric sword to do sh*t tons more damage and i can't kill spider deadra in one hit. and to everyone else, oblivion isn't an absolutely terrible game, but neither is it the greatest game of all time. i've put an ungodly amount of hours into morrowind and honestly, its just better. the graphics aren't amazing but the story is at least interesting. and really? no one has commented on how characters in oblivion fall unconscious.... i mean really, at least in morrowind you could kill anyone and they would just tell you that the world is doomed. All in all, vanilla oblivion wasn't much to brag about and if that's what i'm rating, 7/10 max. with mods, maybe and 8.5/10.
For all the morrowind haters, and morrowind mod haters. morrowind is open world because you can actually go anywhere, levitate and swim forever. you can't glitch into cities by going over a wall because it's all loaded. and seriously get the morrowind mainland mod, cause it freakin kicks ass and makes morrowind twice as big at least.
It was really fun but then I found out that i could enchant items with 99 health drain for no money and killed everything i saw in one hit.
oblivion kicks ass. free to do as you please, realtime combat none of that turn base BS, not really gear orintated. no one spec has a advatage ofver ther other. most rpg players are looking for the easy games that do everything for you which is dumb this game does have downsides as to its very easy to hurt a npc and get thrown in jail, nothing really to do once you hit the top ranks of 1 side (good/evil). all in all i think we can expect great things from the makers of oblivion in the near future
This game is absolute **** compared to any of the prior games in the series. They dumbed it down so much just to appeal to the masses; removed so much content and destroyed so much potential greatness. Morrowind was much better. Daggerfall was the best in the series. Can't wait for Skyrim though. Maybe it'll make up for all the abhorrence that was Oblivion.
oblivion is great ^.^ i only have two complaints 1. it had less depth than morrowind "though i guess this means it is also easier to get into" 2. the combat was boring, its all just button mashing, and watching the three moves of his arm that he does :P the only part that makes it even slightly interesting is when, god forbid, someone blocks! in this area it needs a boost "i totally agree with the guy that said to combine oblivion and dark messiah! dark messiah had the most fun combat system i have ever played!.. and shame on the person that said dark messiah was a joke.."
This game is really cool. It not only provides what most people want:graphics, but provides a decent enough story line to play. Sure, some stuff could be improved, like the insane amount of bugs it has, the limited armor and whatever, but it makes a good game in total. Not every game is perfect.
I've played with the fallout series, stabbed diablo in the forehead like a dozen times, run alond the isles of Vvardenfell, and I still must admit, Oblivion is epic... Even after years, I still recall sometimes the feeling when riding my black horse, I finally see an open Oblivion Gate... My heart beats in my throat, I can't help, i ust go shut it down. Only the question "what kind of Sigill Stone will be there...?" makes my brain go bananas.
I don't really care about graphics, it's good, but that's not everything.
If you say the main storyline is weak, than do the Knights of the Nine, or the Assassin's Guild stuff.
If you're bored, go out in the wild, hunt some bear with a bottle of wine :D
Buy a house in Skingrad, and put your most famed weapons in the display cases, and while watching them and recalling the memories about them, tell the slave chick to make some pie.
I remember when I got the Shield of Chorrol (Escutchion or what the hell) I was smiling for like so long time my face started to hurt...
Of course there are better games, and there will be too, but everyone who played with this must admit, that TES 4 was great, and that it wasn't as bad as some of you described, cause if it had been, you wouldn't played it and wouldnt' be arguing about it
(oh and the guy who said he regrets the time he spent on this game... no comment, if you don't like broccoli, you don't eat it!)
Oh yes, I want only to add my personal opinion about this game: it's one of the most boring games I ever played.
Oblivion should stay in 100th position or something like that. Some of latest comments say it all, probably the most of people voting Oblivion are under 20 years old or something, but more likely it's the new generation of players that have different tastes, or they can't distinguish between a bad game and a good game.
That's why a lot of people (fanboys) are already stating that skyrim is the best game evaaaa! Even though it has not been released yet.
1 of the best rpg ever! But it have some really stupid things. Like the leveling and the thing if you are a mage you can get really good with the bow and sword, even if you are a mage!!! So,you can never be good with magic as you get the sword and bow skill! Should be better made! But huge map, great character selection and graphics. I remember,i couldn´t run the game untill 2 years later when i get a better pc! My vote is 8 of 10 points!
if you dont have to say something nice about someone, better say nothing at all.(or sth like that)
but i still do:
have to admit, Shivering Isles was quite good(more like morrowind)
but even if you dont mind the levelscaling f*''*kup or instant travelling to where you havent been before (cities)or the absence of any balancing at all...there is still the loser storyline, the empty woods\badly placed trees(seen a wolf or two on the way to the next dungeon), dialogues???wtf? havent you realized this?there are none!...ill stop it now.
there are better 3drpgs...like gothic(1+2)[THE BEST EVER, sry bg+fallout], older elder scrolls(or just elder scrolls..haha) even arx fatalis or risen have a feel to them.
Yes, you step out of the prison and suddenly realize that you can go ANYWHERE you like...
but after some time, you realize that there is no place outside the dungeons to be worth travelling to...through the empty lands...
and mods...whats with that?
it takes several years to make the game good, and the devs didnt even intend it that way+ it crashes on and on. ill go now and buy some armor for my buggy horse, wich propably dies in the next encounter or just disappears into...Oblivion.Not that you would need it. The Horse. For real money!!!!!!!!
Wake up!
And in 'Skyrim' theres propably gonna be only 10 skills left...anyone noticed that?
Come on people, how can you keep this so high in the rank? There A LOT of much much better games than this, it's a nice game but... the main quest is very boring, the leveled enemies are awful and completely invalid your character progress (and daedric equipment on bandits when your are high level? Are you kidding me???) the economy is a disaster, when you have explored each kind of dungeon once, you've seen them all. Really. seriously, it's the worst >TES game.
how can you hate on a storyline for being repetitive? if every single game tried to have a completely new story line there wouldn't be a lot of games to choose from. shouldn't the depth of the story and the detail put into the game, count more then the cliche plot? Yes morrowind is far superior to oblivion in everything but graphics, but oblivion is still an amazing game. I've beaten the game on several different characters each time playing a different class, and each time it was like playing the game anew. your constantly finding new items or random quests that you never thought existed, so to all you people who say it's not a true rpg play the game before you talk; and no don't just do the main storyline because that's not even a tenth of the game. in conclusion, don't judge a game by what other games have or don't, but rather what that specific game provides to you; there's a flaw in every great plan waiting to be exposed.
I can't rate Oblivion up because the only reason the game was good was thanks to the modding community. Vanilla Oblivion was terrible! Boring countrysides, a dull and plodding main quest, and the laughably ridiculous level scaling that spawned ebony-armored bandits who were trying to mug me for 5 gold when what the freaking PANTS they were wearing was worth 10,000 times that!
It was an alright game but the level scaling killed it for me.
The only thing this page shows is the average age of visitors to this page.
Ps from the person who wrote the comment right above I really like it and it is one of my favorites and it deserves to get a really higher number i would make it number 7.
Awesome game but I think that: In a future mod they should make it so all the unfinshed quests which are listed at UESP Wiki are finished and they should add more secrets and easter eggs for all those easter egg hunters out there like me and that there should be more shops and guilds and NPCs and more quests and some more official mods and i hope Skyrim will improve on that but for me the overall score for Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is a 4/5.
Gentlemen, and that pair of girls over there, There's a TON of Oblivion hating, But that speaks to the importance of this game. People claim to despise this game for the same reasons they love Dragon Age. In truth people hate this game because it is So popular, If things that are popular (read people) are going to hate them, they'll hate popular things right back. This game is clearly a top 5 game all time. Not #1 , but Obviously NOT #39 like it is rated at the time of me writing this. Wide open sand box type game, more natural leveling system then the typical I've instantly become stronger because a number says I leveled. One of the best modding communities going, prob second to only The Sims series. The weakness of this game is that all mobs level with you. That does keep the game a challenge, Morrowind, which I also enjoy becomes easier as you play, Once you've hit level 10 in Morrowind you're well on your way to becoming a God.
Among the best games ever. You can what you can, what most people here stated as complaint Í would say they dont understand the essence of a RPG.A must have, if you never played, just try and see.
This game is fantastic. I have no idea why it's not in the top five: Many people have argued that morrowind is better, but Oblivion has fantastic graphics, gameplay and is more easily compatible with xbox 360 (xbox standards are very uncommon now).
In short, it's amazing. :)
If you've commented from playing the Xbox 360 or a vanilla game, and think this is anywhere close to the top 25, you're wrong.
Vanilla, this is a disaster of a game. Completing it at level 3 is easier than completing it at level 30, due to thoughtless and broken game mechanics. The graphics are "meh"; the quests largely dull (Feddex are-us) and the vast skill sets pointless when you can make yourself a GOD through abusing the enchant / spell making system.... oh, and melee combat is dull. Advance, slash, strafe backwards, rinse, repeat.
That said - with MODS and the huge modding community, this ranks in the top #10. Any serious game of Oblivion should be racking up over a gig of mods loading with it, which turns it into a sandbox delight of a world that you can play in.
If only modern developers (looking at YOU 2k games / Irrational for including the damn editing splash screen in bioshock, but not the tools) realised that in many cases... their fans are better at making games than they are. At least Oblivion
loved the fractions in this, liked the large world area, main story heh yer..... like no one didnt see that comming, really enjoyed the sidequests they made the game for me cant wait for number 5 hopeing they give the fighting system a makeover tho and possibily through some aspects of fallout into the game
I was cycling through your comments and I was very disappointed. How can you call Tes:Oblivion the best RPG? The storyline has a lot side paths which I love, but besides that it is quite poor. With such large area it is losing the dynamics and makes the player bored. Although the skill tree and fight system is very rich, it does not motivate the player to go on. That is my point of view, you're welcome to disagrre, ANYONE SHOULD HAVE HIS OWN OPINION.
This would be the third best RPG I've ever played and I've played everything on this list. Fantastic graphics, living world, great voice acting, multiple intriguing story lines. What ever you decided you wanted to be there was a whole story line adapted for just that. Only thing that this game lacked was better animations and fighting mechanics.
A good RPG, with wonderful visuals, but i dont think it deserve a position in the first 10, not to talk the second position!
the best RPG ever just the amount of exploration and choices during the main storyline makes this game the best
Love it. For me it's the best Game ever created. I cant w8 4 skyrim to come out.
this is totally one of my favorite rpg games, it has so much to do but it gets boring to to follow the one big quest the whole game there should be more then one story line... but other wise its a totally awesome game.
Solid story, but seriously, it lacked the sheer "vastness" morrowind had.
Plus they removed certain aspects of the game (like a levitate spell) , so you became more "bound" to their path rather than stumbling upon Umbra early in the game and getting so drunk you become ultra powerful (and dumb) for 15 seconds while you proceed to smash him and now have a brilliant weapon @ lvl 2.
THAT is true freedom.
But oblivion was and still is a good game, just took too much out of what made elder scrolls great.
Also,
key point here, which FAILED hugely...
In morrowind you had to find a city (walk there) to have a kindof "taxi" to another city..
Oblivion on the other hand, you could click and teleport INSTANTLY to anywhere you had been.
it 100% negated ANY need for a Horse, which was such an outstanding feature, yet totally and utterly redundant..
I felt so proud when I got (a certain kind of steed), cool red eyes, and dark black coat...until I realized....."wait a minute...it's slower than what I have been doing..and completely useless!!!
..I hope they make aspects from ES 3 &4 to create a brilliant ES5
I love it. the thing about all the travel you have to make, is what makes you even more addicted ! hidden quest, and more than a hundred hidden places than you only can discover them by TRAVELLIN ! just loved. it would definitively be my favourite game IF the main story got bigger..
^I wouldn't go that far. I will state that the game is, like the aforementioned guest stated, an overrated game. The game world was the highlight of this game but the characters and enemies were dry and boring
I think this is a great game on the console. I agree that it is a good game on the computer but mods, cheats, and the like are so very tempting and with them I turn the game into a more morrowind style game that makes it so I can wear clothes under armor, kill everyone and anyone and so on. This game has only one problem, I've beaten it like 50 times on console so don't try to tell me i'm wrong, the main quest is done in 1-2 hours. Max. It also isn't very immersive, excluding the add ons. All you oblivion die hard fans need to suck a kings giant werewolf fist and go play Morrowind. All said and done, a great game but way to crappy-movie-like in immerision and the graphis are not that good and they're not everything. Word to the wise saying the word graphics in a review is like saying "I can't think of anything else good to say about this game, but the graphics are great and up-to-date". Nueh.
Gothic Series>Elder Scrolls.. I wish I could sue them for the time they stole from my life.
Whoever said that people value graphics over gameplay and storyline on this game, I must respectfully disagree. I thought the graphics in this game were absolutely gorgeous. I have a sick rig and I've played every benchmark game there is (crysis, NW2, risen, arma series, etc). I personally think this game is up there with all of them. The actual gameplay is weak. I agree with the above comment that Risen is a better game overall though Oblivion has better graphics. Also, dragon age and the forgotten realms games are infinitely better. I can't comment on the story because I only played it for 10 or so hours total. My final statement: What good is quantity (the hours of gameplay), if there's no quality (the gameplay itself)?
I was in basic training for the Air Force and I told this kid that I was new to the RPG thing but I did play fallout and dragon age and beat and enjoyed both. He said that this game was the best rpg ever!!!. I played the game for a few weeks and thought the graphics were solid, even though my rig could handle pretty much anything I throw at it other than ArmA2 on maximum view distance.
After a couple of weeks of playing this game I determined that it had it's advantages but the actual combat was so so terrible. I truthfully feel like dragon age and neverwinter style is better. I've recently played a few more rpgs and I honestly feel like Risen is better than this game as it has the same immersive qualities but is way better when it comes to combat (unless you play on console then it blows). But this is a PC review and Risen, although not the greatest, defeats this game handily and Dragon Age absolutely obliterates this game.
hard to rate...hardly an RPG in retail version to almost like Morrowind with mods.
This was indeed a good game, although I wish it would have had more random encounters. Roaming around only to run into the occasional wolf etc made it kinda boring.
better gameplay than morrowind by a long shot (made even better by mods!)
this game should be sent to the oblivion for 100% dullness. the dungeons must have been designed by barratt homes because theyre all the same old dull stuff. yea the graphics are good sure, but the gameplay is boring. go on folks, treat yourself to gothic 2 or arx fatalis, thats where the business is going on.
All of its gameplay flaws in the game nullify it's amazing graphics. I wouldn't value graphics more than gameplay if ya' ask me. It's a pain in the butt to level up. When you do a crime, the guards appear from no freakin' where, and know that you did the crime without even seeing what happened. Lack of creatures when your out in the wilderness. The default face of the character's ugly. The game crashes more than 1337 times and is full of bugs. Only the modding community makes the game alive, other than that the game is a joke. I wouldn't even call that an RPG. The game becomes more harder when you level up, what retardedness is that? It's supposed to be easier. It really doesn't need a leveling system but they added it to make it more RPG'ish and it failed horribly. Decent graphics, bad engine. The people who made the game worked hard, but the result is this... Such sadness. Combine an awesome RPG with these graphics and that's it, you've got one of the best games. I've tried many things, mods, cheats to make this game fun.. But no hope at all, it exceeded the maximum limit of lackness, honestly. Mods do nothing more than make the game crash more, I feel sorry for the people who got their game crashed by a mod and now they must search for this blasted mod between all their 200+ mods just like searching for a needle in the hay.. Hard leveling, retarded difficulity, empty wilderness with no creatures except some few deers and wolves ETC. ETC., once again I wouldn't call this an Role-playing Game. More like a Graphics Game, sorry to burst your bubble, Oblivion lovers.
This is one of the most open rpg's i've ever played. In what other rpg can you go steal a horse that would otherwise cost you a lot of time getting the money ;) .
First off, not to knock the fan-bois down, but honestly? This was considered to be one of the premier RPGs when it came out.
This game was and is great, and so much more because of all of the custom content out there. Its an absolutely fun and amazing game. Any one who believes different, while its your right, is not considering that things will always change. One game will never be like the next. Not exactly...
Compared to Elder Scrolls 1 - 3. Oblivion was a massive let down. If people truely loved Oblivion then they are 1. Never played any elder scroll but oblivion. 2. Not true rpg fans.
I have not played oblivion more than 30 hours because a rpg were ennemies are stronger and stronger as you progress is stupid. I mean when the same poor naked bandits from the very beginning of the game become equiped with top ranked armour and weapon 15 hours later for no reason, the game lose all the coherence of its universe.
Plus i hate when the main character become the center of the world in 3 minutes.
Plus the universe just looks like in any so-called RPG; where is the discovery and the lost feeling from morrowind?
Plus the fighting system so much better that you have to take your weapon, whatever your character is.
A word to DeadricBastard: i'm quite young, i was 8 when diablo the first came out; however i have to admit that old games are usually better because more imaginative. For instance dragon age origins and especially fallout 3 are flat and boring. Do you want some colors in your life? games that are at least a bit imaginative? Try out gothic, darklands, Deus ex, albion or the 2 first fallouts. F*ck, what other RPG than fallout the first allow you to finish the main quest without killing anyone?
ive played many rpg's in my time and i honestly belive that this game in many ways is far superior to most, ya the main quest could have been a little better and the lvling system isn't what people are used. but the game made up for it in amzing graphic details, choices your able to make and an immence amount of quests. this is one if my favorite game by far.
although i find your constructive criticism amusing just do to the fact that its laughable that you guys think this game sucks. i also, at the same time find your ill-conceived notions on how "LACKING" this game is appauling and offensive the ELDER SCROLLS series has been critically acclaimed and praised since the dawn of its existence. i do agree with some though that MORROWIND is better in many ways(READ MY POST UNDER MORROWIND ON THIS LIST to see why& why not). but the fact that you guys are saying that the story sucked i STRONGLY, and i mean STRONGLY DISAGREE. one of the best stories i've seen in a while. levelling system is actually, in my opinion, better designed then most other RPGs, because you level up with what you use, i.e.- if you bash some Marauder skulls in with a sword your sword increases. or snipe some goblins with your bow your marksmen increases. to the person who said it has limited classes, the classes are actually limitless, because you can create your own you dont HAVE to choose from the ones the game gives you unlike many other RPGs that force you to pick WARRIOR or a MAGE, etc. etc...... to the person who said its not even an RPG, SHAME ON YOU!!! maybe you should look into what an RPG actually is before making comments about things you dont fully comprehend. and lastly, to the guy who said DARK MESSIAH was better than OBLIVION, guess what??......................WRONG AGAIN!!!!! ive played dark messiah and that game is a JOKE. dont believe me....JUST GO PLAY IT FOR YOURSELVES---ZACH, CA
@guest above, I just think some people are irritated that people seem to care more for graphics of a game rather than the game as a whole. I myself wouldn't put Oblivion in the top 10 for overall gameplay, but perhaps as 11 or 12.
Impossible. This can't be number 50. People! Holy shiznit! First time I ever played this game it was one of the most amazing, in-depth gameplay experiences I've ever had the privilege to enjoy. From the moment I escaped the sewers, all the way up to the climactic ending, and EVERYTHING in between, I've spent more time on this game then every other game I've ever played combined. I haven't even explored the entire world yet. There's so much random things and people and places, it's overwhelming! Sure, it isn't the biggest game world, but it's surely the most detailed! no landscape looks exactly the same! Mountains to climb, hills to fall down, doors to pick, towns to massacre when you're bored. I love this game and everything about it
Awesome game and when it starts getting old just install a mod and quest some more.
Lol this game would actually be nice if it lacked that painful leveling system, and it had some better quests, story, and combat system.
Sometimes less is more. Like Dark Messiah. It didn't have as much freedom, but it still had much better gameplay. Sure, its shorter, but Oblivion is long just long hours of pain unless you install 999 buggy mods to make the game playable.
I wish someone could combine those two games, then we could get something really awesome. You know, the strenghts of both, weaknesses of neither. Better combat and leveling system than Oblivion, something simple and still satisfying, but more freedom and actual roleplaying than DM. Just add a good story, and decent graphics and physics, best game ever.
hmm to one of the above comments it is actually correct oblivion is a lot easier if you dont level up cause if you dont then you dont get mobbed be millions of bears you get mobbed by 1 and i actually leveled a guy to the max on vanilla went into this portal that i was supposed to do a long time ago and got owned by a spider woman it hurt a lot the only good thing is the mods if you go to tesnexus.com they have over 1mil mods i think 1 million mods the only bad side most of those are models and armour and weapons very few of anything else there might be a few good ones by now but i doubt it
how do you figure this isn't an rpg?!?! it is one of the few games that just throws you into a world and says "do what you want!" you can follow the main quest, or just go off an do whatever.
Storyline is a bit lackluster. I felt the character development was minimal. The setting (which was what really helped along the last one) felt like it was over exagerated. Lots of potential with the main storyline, but too little was done with it.
Though with the games out right now it is probably one of the few modern games that is actually worth your while.
The best rpg alongside dragon age origins. What makes it even better are the thousands of mods so you can make the game exactly how you want it
Definitely deserves to be in the top 3. Sure it has downsides - clunky interface, too few voice actors doing all the voices, crap levelling system where you can 'cheat' to maximise bonuses easily or simply finish the entire quest at level 1, etc. BUT, the graphics for 2006 blew everything out of the water and still are a benchmark for hardware capability. Don't rate the game by the vanilla version which Bethesda clearly rushed and ruined (ruined to what it COULD have been). Modded with Oscuro's Overhaul and others to make the game what it SHOULD have been, and it remains the absolute pinnacle of medieval fantasy RPG's.
OBLIVION ISNT REALLY RPG think.. game is MUCH easier if you dont level up.. and what about story.. demon trying to control world.. emperor in danger.. well i havent seen that before (sarcasm) still i liked.. "100%" cleared.. it was souless.. bad story.. bad leveling.. but still managed to be fun
A truly horrible game, bitty play, limited class system, very limited fun compared to many other RPGs. Morrowind will reign superior for many years to come.
For us people who werent 17 when diablo (original) came out this is the best game yet. along side of dragon age origins, diablo 2 (LOD), and fallout three. cmon people get with the new games and quit saying those old dusty games are better than these. yes, good for their time but not better. Have you seen the maps on TES4 and F3?! or the down right kick Azz graphic epicness of Dragon Age? Blood Mage + Arcane Warrior. Templar + Champion :P
When I first came to this site I could not believe this game was not in the top 5!? Then I saw how this voting worked. This game gets my vote as best RPG EVER!! Even if you don't agree, I simply cant understand not voting it in the top 5 just to give people looking for a great rpg a great choice for a new game.
This game was great. A little too much on the travelling to complete quests ( its a huge world ).
Completed 154 quests ( including Knights Of The Nine and Shivering Isles ) but did'nt finish the main story. Got stuck on Spies somehow and could'nt get past it. Try again later, gonna check out Risen for a while.
4.
Comments:
Everything is awesome about this game, except the to small inventory.
The first two or three chapters were great. But the last couple leave a lot to be desired. There are numerous glitches and small issues which, if fixed or improved, would make the game much better and more 'real'. There's little in the way of equipment. The storyline and freedom of choice might have been impressive, but most of the time I felt none of the available choices are what I would actually say or do, and I was being pushed along. As the game neared its end, it felt increasingly incomplete.
yea it really is a good rpg not the best but still one of the best
witcher 1 and 2 are the best things that happened to rpg genre in LONG time... It actually takes things further instead feed on old schema from 10 years ago like many nowadays rpgs try to do... I really liked how they made choices meaningful. excellet rpg even if 1 lacks in battle system.
i didnt like the combat system very much...the ots mode was okay, but having played games like nvn on that engine before, i quickly saw that it is actually the same, only that you now have to click in the right rythm..anyway, enough hate, this is really an outstanding rpg, by the definition...you make choices that really influence the later story, in a dramatic way(not youll get the uber item because you saved the elf before), it is necessary to decide, and decide now. very high replay-value, great setting/realistic fantasy approach, and actually better than the books imo. if you like dark, adult fantasy and/or rpgs you have to play this. and otherwise too...remember the quest when you have to drink vodka with that guy, like all night long, and suddenly he asks you to go outside and there are those spitting giant flowers? im sure youll smile like i do now :D
not to mention the epic battles vs the stryga, werewolf...i could go on and on ;) and rank 5 is not so very unrealistic....
absouletyl amazing. As i am playing it on my alienware x51 aurora , the graphics are astonishing! really long story too about 40-60 hours. Fabolous game , Id also like to recomend you guys Gothic!
The absolutely best RPG i ever played. Great combat System (way better than the one of the witcher 2), awesome story and the atmosphere is just brilliant.
One of the best stories I've got to experience!
It's just so dramatic, serious and all that other crap that makes the story interesting and likable.
It has lots of codex (about the world, characters, creatures etc.), good dialogue, interesting quests and nice UI.
Also the atmosphere in the game is really good, makes you just dive in (and the music helps a lot).
The combat in this game is easy and fast to learn, while keeping it fresh and fun till the last cut-scene.
It also has a few mini games that are fun to try (and easy to get addicted to), also the controls are fairly nicely planned out and the game feels really polished.
My rating: 8½/10
I just can't get past the combat system, which made me want to smash up my mouse and keyboard within a few minutes of starting play.
Absolutely best atmosphere ever made in video-games. Great storyline...great everything. The best game I ever played, with Gothic II : NoTR.
I havent played many RPG games but this definitely is one of the best games i have ever seen and played.
Solid game, and I'm looking forward to playing the sequel, but #2 of all time? Seems like the bias of short memories, limited experience playing RPGs, or both. Best thing about for me is that it feels like its own place, not a direct copy of other games and other fantasy settings.
The Witcher is amazing!!! I have hope CD Projekt will made 3rd part of that game rly
This game simply rocks. The atmosphere, the storyline and even the sound tracks. It's amazing..
Well the only thing I hate about this game is the lack of quest guidelines. Mostly you just get a bit of info about the quest and then you have to roam around, exausting every single option on that chunk of map until you run into something useful. Without a proper walkthrough, it takes more than a month to beat the game, which is really too much...
Bad combat system, long loadings... nah, there are better games...
wonderful game!
it is even better than the books.(that means a lot!)
and a game where you can do booze and fistfights and gambling ...and theres sex, too! you dont get that very much... perhaps in gta:sa...why isnt that in the list ? well its not a classic rpg but it has many elements...well, no dwarves involved i guess...think about it.
'the witcher' was pretty cool plus you had even had to think and memorize stuff for some quests.
place 6 is appropriate for that one.
and right now higher than any elder scrolls...harhar
This game is amazing! First actual game I played that i felt like the story actually happen. All these other story lines are way to childish with no language violence or sex. Like that would ever happen in real life... About time they made a game for us adult gamers.
combat would be one of the best in terms of the rpgs i have played general story, ehh yer they could have tried harder
Didn't do it for me.
I see why others like it, but i thought it was boring.
Dandelions face was the scariest thing I've seen in any game! And he is supposed to be a ladies man?
Joke aside, superb rpg...hope the next one is as good.
I didn't think the English version voice acting was that bad. Heard far worse in bigger titles than this.
One of the best RPG games ever...
And for the third guest... What controls? The game can be played with mouse and pause button only lol
I initially enjoyed the game but the game will not allow for dual gpu, i.e. I cannot run sli with this game. Even with 1 gtx 295, I had to turn one of the cards off. Also, being on the same side as people with upside down crosses just wasn't my thing
This was one of the few games that had more than just nice graphics. The combat system is nice, as you can choose between wolf style for power attack, cat style to fight agile enemies, and griffin style to combat multiple enemies. Alcohol as a health potion that can actually impair you with drunkenness is a nice health potion concept too.
amazing game with fantastic background, unique dark fantasy world where no easy choice exists, highly recommended
Great game
Give it a 8 out of 10
cant wait for Witcher 2 coming out in march 2011
The Witcher would be ranked *way* higher, if you guys could experience the polish version of this game. I guess that making a quality release in at least three languages was a bit too much for a startup company, so I'm not blaming them.
Voice acting makes quite a difference, because thanks to it you feel like you interact with people, not brainless NPC's. It draws you into the story. It makes you care. And you don't have this feeling in English version. due to poor acting.
It is one of the true rpgs where your choices really affect the story line. This game deserves to be in top 5
The controls sucked, awesome graphics and story line though *shrug*.
Played through the game, but wasn't that impressed. It doesn't meet the hype. People are always like "It's more mature than modern RPGs", but really all it adds is sex and gore. It wasn't bad, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't as great as it's made out to be.
great RPG based on some awesome polish fantasy novels...i really enjoyed the more mature characters and storyline and am really excited for the sequel! it had its flaws like any other game but not a bad release for a debut from CDPROJEKT im looking foreward to seeing what they do ... also as a fan of metal music i thought it was very cool that Vader made a song for the first game as they are fans of Andrzej Sapkowskis works :)
5.
I think,if oblivion is on the 4th place,morrowind deserves the 1st...
Comments:
I dont think they ever make another Elder Scrolls game better than Morrowind.
Occasionally an absolutely brilliant game comes along Morrowind was one of them yes it has a few glitches but that is more than compensated by the shear scale of hours of playability and things to do.I have many happy memories of playing this epic it has set the standard and no RPG has come close yet - This should be in first place
Morrowind definitely should be on the 1st place on the list best RPG ever and even after 8 years i still playing it.
I play this game for years and still have a lot of hours of playing and i still enjoying it veryt much even after all this time with all those new games out there.
Im still playing it even now great game and with all those mods ever greater, Morrowind forever.
Another vote for Deus Ex and Morrowind being higher on the list. I absolutely loved Oblivion, but Morrowind still felt like the better game to me even though I never beat it.
I need to know how the hell Oblivion beat Morrowind on this list, sheer treachery!
it would have been awesome if TES III would had the whole Morrowind continent just awesome if you know what i mean
great game but when i put imperial cuiras or armor game crashes all the time
From this kind of RPG I only played 'Skyrim' and 'Oblivion'. (Think Oblivion 's still better than Skyrim,...), but now I'm seeking for this game. Seems to be really nice!
Morrowind has one of the best combat elements in my opinion. I wish the other games followed what Morrowind offered in range of explorable areas, hidden treasures, rarer pieces of armor, and the immensity of gold some things were worth. All skills based from chance and luck, and that is what made this one of my favorite games of all time. :)
What we need, is Skyrim set in the world of Morrowind. That way we'll have the amazing graphics and better combat from Skyrim but still the sheer awesomeness of Morrowind.
This one should be above oblivion and skyrim because after morrowind Bethesda improved only graphics and started to make gameplay, atmosphere and plot worse and worse :(
this game has consumed more of my time than any other single player game multiplied by 100. the world is massive but at the same, very intricate. this is the only RPG where you are truly a vertual person placed in a vertual world with complete and total freedom to live your life. The freedom of this game has made every other rpg feel like a fraud. like im just being led along a path with no ability to be an individual. The least linear of games feels like a prison in comparison. The world is massive and near incmpletable but if you ever manage to exhaust all there is to do you can simply download mods enough to creat an entire new world larger and more magnificient than the original. The problem people have with this game is nothing is laid out for you. you aresimply dropped in a world and expected to find your own way. If you are not willing to use your own resourcefulness, wonder through massive wildness with only written directions that arent always easy to follow, and most of all use your own brain and agency to find entertainment then you should stick to the other 10000 rpgs where everything you do is desided for you before you even put the disk in. If you have what it takes then this game will immerse you like non other and provide more owers of entertainment than any other game ever created. I am a FIRM believer that morrowind is the greatest game ever released to this point in time and would challenge anyone to put forth the effert (because it takes more effort than any game ive ever played) and discover just how amazing this game is.
Morrowind is by far my favourite; it even surpasses Skyrim in my books :) System Shock 2 was also a great game.
Morrowind is the best RPG ever, I have been playing it very often in past 10 years. No other game matches that.
I think it's the best elder scrolls game I played (played the 3rd 4th and 5th) the graphics are outdated (nothing retextures and new models from the modding community can't fix) but the stories are very good
Like many others, I spent countless hours on that game. It was without a doubt the best RPG in that time and I prefer it more than Oblivion. Obviously it does not compete with Skyrim now but it has been more than 10 years.
Like many others, I think that the combat system is the main flaw in that game. Beside that, however, is the only RpG that kept me playing it over and over for years. Probably not the best, but surely the most catching. The highly and easily customizable content grant immortality to this title.
Without doubt best RPG ever :). Love the variety in every aspect of the game
The best original fantasy world ever created. There is so much loving care poured into creating ever facet of Vvardenfell and its history, mythology, literature, ecology, architecture, cultures and more. Some of the gaming systems are now archaic and painful but its strengths far outweigh its flaws. One of the largest, longest, most unfinishable games ever.
I wanted to like this game so badly. I do respect many things about this game--its massive scale, its comprehensive ability system, and its statistical foundations, in particular. But what this game does wrong, it does very wrong. Most significantly, this game didn't engage me emotionally. It even struggled to maintain my cognitive and material attention. Frankly, this game just bored me. Moreover, every interaction in this game feels one-dimensional, the game's design is laden with unnecessary tedium, it has serious balance flaws, and the combat, oh, the combat! It sucks, utterly, and that alone doomed this game for me.
one of the best rpgs ever....better than oblivion...should be in top 5
It have system and some quest problems but it was originally made like huge classic RPG with all classic traditions and big love. I dont knew why it was big success of Bethesda.
was trying to play morrowind againg in 2011 on my laptop(ah, so trivial since it barely run on my pc back then) and just couldn't get it to work properly, first had problems with alchemy then with shield spell, simply unplayable. if not for it's bugs I would consider it to be in top 3.
Yeah i dunno about this one. It's definitely EXACTLY the type of game i like but a few things about it keep me from finishing it. First is the quests. They are so boring and repetitious. "go here and get this." "go talk to this person"...basically just running around talking to people the whole time aside from a few times they send you to a cave or something where might have to kill 2 or 3 npc's. Then there's the unlimited option of making yourself a GOD. I don't know where to draw the line at what's cheating and what isn't. If i use spellmaking or alchemy i'm a god like 20minutes into a brand new game. With alchemy you can get your stats into the thousands and make a potion to accomplish just about anything you want to do. I make a few int and luck pots then drink em and make some more and drink em...do this exponentially and then start making other potions.Soon you have potions that give you thousands in every stat that last for as long as you want. Then you add in spellmaking and you can raise any skill you want to any level you want...make a spell that increases alchemy or whatever by 100 X 8. you got 800 alchemy plus ur base. You can make that same exact spell more than once too so if you cast both of em...you got 1600 alchemy plus base. The messed up part is that this is NOT cheating. Im only using the in-game skills to get the maximum benefit. So i have to decide for myself whats considered cheating by saying "ok.dont drink more than one potion at a time or dont use spellmaking to raise skills". At that point i just feel like im limiting myself to the level of badass that i want to be and it ruins the whole thing. Then when im so unstoppable i really have no interest in doing those boring quests. All that being said, i still think it's a great game i just wish they would've put a limit on the spellmaking and alchemy abilities so i didn't have to make up my own rules for the game.
Best of all TES. Intriguing world with it'ś own culture, religion and politics. I totally agree with the comments that says this game deserves 1st place.
A vastly superior game, which was revolutionary when it came out and changed the face of RPGs as we know them. Morrowind will forever be infinitely greater than the extremely dumbed down Oblivion. This is a gamer's game.
One word: Immersion. I didn't even play video games before I picked this up for xbox- didn't even have my own console. This thing blew my mind. You could do ANYTHING in an intricately created fantasy world. The care and creativity in this game puts Oblivion to shame. Yes the combat was pretty bad but that pales in comparison to the triumph's of this game.
How can Morrowind be below Oblivion? Blasphemy!
Put OB 40th, and Morrowind in the Top Ten!!! Now!!!
Morrowind graphics extenders - texture replacers are all there and do such a good job you won't need oblivion, all one needs to do then is think of the combat system as mathematical formula of accuracies and chances and not to not think of it as a oblivion sort of slasher
Also, when I started Morrowind the first time, I strongly felt that I would have total freedom in that world, and was damn right. Never after that I met a game with such a freedom (Oblivion is just a crappy copy, so forget.)
I've just finished the original story. Regularly play this game since 2005, but every time before I just spent loads of time to do anything, not the main quest. Now I just forced myself to forget about anything else.
Comparing Morrowind to other RPG's, I can just say that having no competitive graphics and battle mechanics says about greatest "inner filling" (sorry for my english :D) of this game. Didn't play things like BG, but Morrowind is definitely the best of 3D RPGs.
im suprised not to see this in top 10 becouse i played most of the gae son this list up to numb 50 and this is my fav
At the time I am writing this Morrowind is at 30th, It CLEARLY deserves to be rated higher.
sure oblivion had a better fighting system and graphics but i'd still go for morrowind. this game makes makes you appreciate your accomplishments, especially finding locations and rare items, unlike oblivion where locations are easy and you can just find a rare item in your nearest shop.. also i got tired of oblivion's many caves, forts, etc.. just tedious and i got bored of the monotony..
One of the best OPEN ENDED RPGs ever made. However, the NPCs lacked life and depth of personality as does this game's successor. They really need to work on that quality of game. Other than that, decent game that can keep you busy for many hours.
Good, but fatally flawed, would be my view on Morrowind. Positives are a HUGE world, hundreds of side quests, extensive stats and abilities to master, wonderful inventory, tidy graphics, and a relatively easy and powerful editor for making adjustments. Ah, but the downsides. Firstly, around 10% of the map can be negotiated by 'fast travel'. For the other 90%, you're walking. For a ten minute trip from the town you're in to a minor dungeon, that's fine. For a three hour trudge back with a sackful of loot from a major dungeon... -_- Secondly, Morrowind is about as emotionally involving as watching the kettle boil. Characters rarely venture outside of the two dimensional, the game features slightly more dialogue options than Minesweeper, no-one gives a flying **** what you are doing or why, and the whole thing is so painfully dry that those used to the likes of the Final Fantasies, Baldur's Gate Series, or even Dragon Age, will find it hard to bear. Thirdly and finally - and by far the most frustrating - is Morrowind's disasterous difficulty curve. Essentially, you level up from level 1 to 100. The game works out roughly as follows. Levels 1-20: Getting Killed By Rats. Levels 21-25: A Balanced Game, where harder fights require tactics. Levels 26-100: God Slayer. Morrowind's trouble with levelling up is that power rewards itself. An example of this is as follows. To level up our Conjuration skill, we must successfully use Conjuration spells. To successfully cast a conjuration spell, we must be at a sufficiently high conjuration level. This **** is all over the game. Then, when you take into account the ridiculously overpowered items you can make through enchantment (ring of regeneration, and you'll never die again), after a point the difficulty of the game drops out entirely, and you're faced with a walking simulator. -------- 07/10 ----------
Best RPG ever. Just the endless possibilities would be enough to grant it the first place, but there's the story too, the best leveling system I've ever seen (hands down), the realistic atmosphere...
Only tradeoffs are the AI, the combat and the scalability of the enemy levels (you end up beating almost everything with your bare hands...)
Anyways, I can honestly say it is at least three times as good as oblivion. The depth, enemies not scaling with you... (you hit a weapon damage cap, they don't.) Realistic guards (how can they fight me? I saved the world they've been standin around.)
Pure randomness, all the stuff to go do and see and find...
My favorite video game to date, a revolutionary gem. Like all recent Bethesda games, it boasted an incredible construction used for mods, which made the game truly endless. I still play it after six years, and I've yet to play anything that comes close to the charm and wonder that Morrowind delivers.
Best RPG game ever. I played almost everything above and this one is definietly my favorite !
Well gameplay lets this one down for me.
I created a Nord axeman and pumped strength. Bad Mistake! Makes for really boring combat.
All I can do effectively is to chop down with my axe because slash and stab are rubbish with axes.
It is so f....ing tedious to do it over and over until somebody drops to the floor.
The game does have a nice atmosphere when all the new packs are added - grass, textures and faces etc.
I remember when I first played this game. I was still playing final fantasies and didnt care about ANY other sort of RPG.
My mate turned around and said "***K-head, play this, it's really good"
So i saw it was on special and took this "game" home..
...
...
..I did not see the natural light of day for about 3 months!!!
The story was extremely solid, and had so many side quests and stories to go on.
HELL, if you wanted to spend a whole day reading, you could read the In-Game books and they were breathtaking.
I remember the first scene when you emerge, and you first hear the free, and breathtaking music, coupled with the sounds of the water lapping on the shore, as you witness the vastness of the game...
I was captivated.
This game was so much better than Oblivion, and they need to put more of a Morrowind aspect into the 5th game if they wish to maintain a solid fanbase.
They took out things from Morrowind (like the levitate spell), because they thought it let you activate certain parts of the game too soon, (or be too powerful too early).
But that was the magic of Morrowind, to play it ANY WAY you wanted, be whoever you wanted to be, and it did it well!!
A little buggy, but in terms of a 3d/first person RPG, BEST i've ever played!!Hands down!
Best RPG ever made...
If u dont want "old graphic" put in mods like "Better Bodies" and Better Heads"
Quite large world...many things to find, places to explore, quest to solve. In depth character creation and development. Just plain fantastic
And the magic is so uber alle speilen.
I am going to install it again together with the 2 exp Bloodmoon and Tribunal. ME LOVE
I think this series of games serves one purpose; to compete in a competition for the most annoying fanboys in the world. It would be a huge 4 way brawl between (in no order): 1. Mac users 2. ATI fanboys 3. console gamers 4. Elder Scrolls seres fanboys. Tough decision would win that one.
i never liked this game. its kinda stupid and crappy fighting system almost like runescape fighting system , and hard to find quests if u are lacking in english..
this game is amazing for its music, story, creation, and freedom, the only thing that it lacked was gameplay, i will agree for its time it was great, but this game would be waaaayyy better with the gameplay and graphics of oblivion. By the way anyone that has played oblivion (for pc only!) and didnt like specific things about it, there is always modding that makes the game way better and is easy to do!
Good game... if i could get over the many glitches and bugs. the main being accuracy and arrow accuracy. other than that major failure this game was playable.
Why is this game so low. This is one of the best rpg in the world. superior in almost all ways to oblivion. Oblivion only did 3 things better. 1. Graphic where very low for it time. Specailly sence games come out at the some time looking so much better. 2. Combat. Ok morrowind combat sucked. What you expect for an early xbox game. Daggerfall combat was so much better but you can not do combat like that anymore thanks to analige sticks. Concles and their lame controllers and lame games. 3. No cliffraks. I hated those birds so much.
I played at this game... something like 2000 hours. Why? The only RPG i know where you actually enjoy exploration
So, the olnly reason I didnt finish this brilliant game was because I spent too much time on it, I loved it SO MUCH that after about 100 hours of gameplay and five different characters with different classes I didnt see it through. And that might be on of the problems with it, that it was too big. I got so sidetracked with all of the shiny I couldnt keep up with the game. But HIGHLY RECOMENDED! my mmories go waay back with this one.
the post above mine is mainly right. OBLIVION took out all of the things from morrowind that were great and that should have been in oblivion. he mentioned the fact that you couldnt kill everyone thats true and it sucks too because it takes away from the realism of the game. next is the fact that in oblivion you cant wear clothes under your armor, probabley so you cant stack constant effect enchantments, but c'mon who would wear 100+ lbs. of armor without wearing anything underneath.. again taking from the realism. now onto the spells, in morrowind you could teleport, and my personal favorite LEVITATING!!! those are just a couple. they also had more, better, and more unique items, as where in oblivion evrything was the same and randomly generated. but also take in to concideration the improvements to oblivion. map size increased by a few square miles, combat was drastically increased, and of course the graphics were far superior. still play them both till this day. eventhough ive beat them both at least a couple times each. i could go on & on&on&on&on........ but ill stop here. for those of you who love the series. and have never played TESII:DAGERFALL I HIGHLY reccomend it. graphics are worse than morrowind, but the map is huge. and i mean HUGE!!!!. the downside though is that the whole world is randomly generated unlike morrowind that was painstakingly created from the ground up. but WIKI it, DAGGERFALL i mean. the map is BIG--ZACH, CA
To the guy mentioning Fable 2 and Assasin's Creed 2... Dude... The games were not that good. First off... Anything Fable had was Ruined in Fable 2. Assassin's creed 2: First off... The graphics declined. They didn't go up. 2, The game was just boring. 3 Way to repetative, and to much crap between anything that drawed me in. (At least in the first one, I really wanted to reach the next part tot he plot.) Only thing they fixed in the second was adding in items, and a very few other things.
Now. About the Witcher. I cannot say anything about that. Not only does it look good, it has great story reviews. And its based off a book. Which in my opinion already gives it a plus. I haven't played it yet however.
As to Morrowind itself. For all you graphic lovers... This game was pretty damn beautiful. It has aged, but you know... The graphics have a certain warmth to them that I don't feel in a lot of other games. Oblivion made itself to cartoony. Now... World size... There is no doubt at all that Morrowind is way larger then any of the games mentioned above. Morrowind had some very awesome scenery too. And I LOVED the expansions. The story line was deep and immersive for those that weren't to lazy to actually read all the dialogue. Oh... And one reason Oblivion sucks so much. Is you cannot actually kill everyone. In Morrowind you can. Did I mention the expansions already? Or how about the fact that Morrowind had multiple vampire clans like oblivion should of had. The only redeeming part of oblivion infact... Was its expansion. I mean... Sheogorath is just awesome. But... I have to say I still like Morrowinds expansions more. As much as it pains me to say so. Because Sheogorath is the coolest charecter in all of elderscrolls behind one person of course, which is mentioned in like... My last sentance. And how shall I end this.
If none of that mattered. There is one last thing. You played as the Neveraine. Enough said.
yes, best ever played. rare!
why are there so many rpgs with stupid storys?
Best freakin RPG ever. Oblivion maybe had the graphics and gameplay, but Morrowind had the immersion, story, setting and plot that can beat graphics any day! Truly a masterpiece :D
I like it, but I wish the quest and journal were like oblivion. Other than that good game!
Excellent choice for number 1 game could play for days and days straight and i have its so addicting
I JUST WANNA SAY...WHAT ABOUT TITAN QUEST....DIABLO WITH BETTER GRAPHICS
Great game. Setting driven storyline, but it is not the 'best' out there. It is a classic though, and every gamer should try and give it a go.
i think the witcher ,fable 2 and assasins creed 2 should top the list. and not to forget about the upcoming witcher 2.. i dont think thier standards can be met..
Morrowind really brings back memories for me. The first time I picked up the game I was close to 9 years old. I'm 17 now and still enjoy the game. I love Forgotten Realms. Baldur's Gate I & II has got to be my favorite single player PC RPGs.
Brilliant game. So much bigger in so many ways than it's successor Oblivion - hugely absorbing. Just a shame it looks so dated now graphically, and the combat sure was clunky and lame. If Bethesda can take the essence of Morrowind and make it look better than Oblivion, then ES:5 would be amazing.
i would also agree ... i love oblivion but it doesnt have the story or world that i enjoyed so much in morrowind ... oblivion is great game but i think morrowind better of the two ... and hell yes Deus Ex should automatically make top three in any RPG list
Totally agree, Morrowind should be the 1st, if not morrowind. Put Deus Ex there!
6.
Comments:
If i had a choice to forget one game in my life, it would be Torment so i could relive it again. I envy people who have not played it.
Best story ever, but worst action ever, and that's a shame; otherwise it would have been the best RPG ever!
This was most immersive game i ever played (and i play games 12 years) with truly amazing plot and atmosphere... Nothing beat torment yet. But to fully enjoy game you should play character with high charisma / wisdom / intelligence so mage... Otherwise you will miss many dialog options and choices... Though playing with low charisma can be funny. (you will get retarded conversations :) )
Top3 rpg: torment, bg2, fallout1
Best rpg ever... if only they would have bothered to finish it. From the beginning of the mortuary to the end of the clerks ward/ lower ward area this game is so freaking awesome, but the rest of the game seems to be too short and too shallow. Like there is missing an area with the same size and depth as the hive or clerks/lower ward where the mid to high level part of the game should be. And what's the point of 9 spell levels with awesome spells when you won't get to use level 7+ spells until the final battle.
ill have to comment on that one too...
it is an epic piece of art, i loved playing it, and the dialogues, well you get it, its really good, read the posts. BUT that person below, who starts with *sigh* and has a minus 9 points...hes right, in a way... the game has quite a lot of combat, although you can often avoid it, and the combat totally sucks in this game, im sorry to say it, but its true. if you want to be told an epic story with a deep characterdesign, and a almost dm-like feeling and great artwork/sound and an adult, philosophical setting with an odd touch and all those wonderful ideas they had...this is one of the best, if not the best games around. if you really really need that action and want to fight epic battles, it is rather bad, not at all like bg or iwd, unfortunatelly. bg and fallout had a (almost, depending on your very own taste) equal good storytelling, and the superior combat system, so those are the obvious choices for a videogames fan. planescape is like an exotic, unknown fruit: bite it, love it or dont.
*Sighs* Planetscape is both good and overrated. Nice world, nice questing and it's refreshing even in the silver age to find games where dialogue choices are genuinely significant. However the general combat is fairly weak, and seeing as this makes up a great part of the game, that's fairly hard to stomach. Compared to some of the modern travesties in this list, it is excellent. However when it comes to the Fallout 1+2/BG2-shaped crunch, Planetscape isn't as good as its fans would have you believe. Ignore the hype and there's a fine game within, but when put on a pedestal by so many, it doesn't quite reach those heady heights.
this game ruined every other computer game for me, all others feel shallow after playing this.
Amazing, amazing setting, one of the best ever. Feels like nothing else and never breaks character, right down to the item descriptions. A bold attempt to do something adult and innovative in RPGs.
This game is completely awesome, the story design and extra content is extremely immersing. the combat needs some work, but characters, world and storyline are second to none! i actually played this for the first time in 2008 when a friend advised it to me, although graphically it was way outdated the game swept me away!
I do not understand the love this game continues to receive. Sure, it's wordy. Yeah, it's not your usual fantasy fare - it's got a weird meta-plot about the existence of living. And there's lots of reading...but...it just isn't that good.
Ok, admittedly my expectations were sky-high when I got this on gog.com (years after buying it originally but running out of time to play) but i have never been so disappointed in a game.
I hated the humor, rolled my eyes at the fairly eminently vapid verbosity of the game, and didn't enjoy the combat, nor the fairly awkward mini-quests and subplots....i just don't get this game.
But the story -it's so...disappointing! No plot twists like BG, mysteries that never really seem very compelling, and characters and character motivations that are either forgotten or changed to fit the fairly linear plot.
It's weird. But it's not gooood weird. I don't like being such a contrarian, but honestly, I thought it was a waste of time. (for a bit on this reviewer, i adored bg1, liked bg2, loved fallout1-2, but my fave rpg of all-time, with no reservations is the piece of art known as morrowind.)

Absolutely the best story of any computer game so far, so complex it makes you wanna play it again to see everything and to try any possible dialogue option. It did change the way I looked at rpg games and truth be told, I've been unsatisfied with those I played after Planescape: Torment.
Played this a few years back now, Great game. Think its gained more of a following in the past few years. Nice well written story line good dialogue. I played through it twice and felt an attachment to the characters.
this game was, after all this comments of its "godlike" adventures, a bit of a disappointment for me... the game starts great, but i really expected a longer and more attractive storyline... the end approaches quickly and does not surprise... sry, burn me if u want, but this one aint one of my favourites... 6.5 out of 10
A work of art. The best RPG. Ever. Truth. Peace. Goodwill. Will change your life.
Can actually make you a better person for having played it.
Goes without saying you can't make a sequel to this. The writers and designers themselves are probably still wondering how they made this game. Soundtrack is also very good - although I would love to hear the originally composed scores, and not the ones that shipped with the game..I'm sure it would rock as well, and provide at least an equal and complementary experience, if not better (the original scores were holistic pieces designed to work with the game from the start.)
Might do with a graphics upgrade though. But nothing overdone IMHO...the Jungian archetype-type NPC portraits were were an excellent touch. And the voiceacting should not be meddled with.
You would probably need to be pretty mature - as a human being - beforehand to appreciate this work.
*shudders*
I had to wait over 2 years till I got this game but It was worth the waiting. Absolutely in my top 5.
THE BEST !!!
one could say that, where it not for the crappy combat (not to mention 10+yrs old graphs)
and aton of bugs(yeah...can be patched...)
but if you like story telling, if you like fantasy, if you like epic stories and crazy chars and dialogues(more than 'yes' 'no' 'i kill you') philosophic tendencies and, and, and ...there is nothing like this very game until *updated my journal*...
but games are supposed to sell and art rarely makes the money, alas, it is mostly the other way around... im gonna cry now...
this game is my 3rd favorite rpg just below BG2 and DAO, the main issue that ruins this game is the combat. otherwise it's flawless
I like BG2 Better, but no game can rival the ultra interesting main plot of Planescape Torment, and of course the DIALOGUE. The DIALOGUE options were great in Planescape.
I wrote this for BG2, but I will write it here too. Now Bioware comes up with a game full of blood, ugly creatures, and slow motion sequences (DAO Anyone) and calls it an RPG, I must admit that the companions in DAO were good but the rest is just filler material.
Dear Bioware, we already have Bethesda for useless fancy action killing, childish violence, level scaling, and potion making. We need Bioware to create a carefully thought story line with amazing quests, environment, dialogue and a combat action where I will do some thinking at least. So BIOWARE please do not become Bethesda I know they are earning more, but still please don't.
The reason Black Isles went out of business is cause they were dumb and didn't advertise this game. Definitely one of my favorite RPGs all time.
DON'T PLAY THIS GAME! I've played it recently and now I considere every other game as crap. Due to lack of things which are present in PT: lines, plot, characters, unbelievable interesting and colorfull world, habitated by amazing creatures. The resolution, and not very best, but still original graphic could be a problem, but once you are in this world, you will be propably amazed by its diversity. Hell, what is to say, this is fun of high standards. It just blow my mind.
If only there was a way to play this game in slightly higher resolution. Its wonderfully written. More so even than BG2 as it really is about characterization of the protagonist only.
I tried to play through this in 2005 and I nearly gouged my eyes out. 640x480 is just too painful. Still, a beautiful creation.
Planetscape Torment is frequently touted as the best PC RPG, due to its dialogue heavy style and off-kilter story and approach. Ultimately, for me, it didn't quite rise up to its billing, and though enjoyable wasn't on a par with the BGs or Fs of this world. Postives? PT's dialogue is verbose, and it does matter. The fact that your stats contribute directly towards your dialogue is nice (though Fallout actually does this better, IMHO) and that so many upgrades are unlocked by dialogue is nice. The worlds within are very inventive and pleasant to negotiate. The...actually when I sit down and try and list factors as to why PT is good I struggle. Adjectives like "nice" and "pleasant"? The overriding memories are of its flaws. Firstly, the combat in PT is dull. Granted, PT is not a hack and slash, but that is no excuse for the level of monotomy it brings. Secondly, the party system is weak and unpleasant. Party members are sterile and for me the likes of Morte and Nordom felt like they were mocking me for playing the game. Then, there is PT's jewel...the dialogue/story. Frankly, it isn't that good. There, I said it. More content does not equate to better. Games like FFVII or KoToR do so well with story because they don't waste your time. If you're the sort of person who read every damned book you found in Morrowind, every codex in DA and hates LotR because their wasn't enough in the appendices, then you'll enjoy PT. For me personally, Dialogue and story has to earn its keep, and in PT it doesn't. Yet having said all this it makes it look like I hate PT. I don't hate it. It's a fair RPG that will be better than most of the muck to come for the next few decades. I just wish that fans and the game itself would congratulate it a little less. --------06.5/10-----------
I cannot believe this is not in the Top Ten.
Has the same engine as Baldurs Gate, and a much better story; infact, the story is probably the absolute best!
this is one of the forgotten relics of gaming. created by BLACK ISLE STUDIOs AND INTERPLAY. the people that brought you FALLOUT............NEED I SAY MORE---ZACH, CA
I played this game last year (2009) after reading about it, so it's not part of my childhood or anything. Boy, did it blow my mind. I don't even think of it as a game, but more like a work of art. The storyline is second to none. I loved it.
yes the story is amazing and the planescape world is totally crazy, the map is not so big but its so rich with amazing characters and side quests with very interesting plots. the games so original its kinda like it JADAROSKY and DAVID LYNCH did a video game it would be like this. amazing game!!!! is it really a game????
This is the best told story ever in video game history, hands down. I don't know how well it would translate into today's market due to the heavy reliance on text and reading, but if you have an intellect slightly higher than the average Halo fanboy then you owe it to yourself to play this game. The gameplay is standard isometric and nothing special, but the story more than makes up for it.
This game really needs to be brought into the current digital age... There are alot of things in this game that could be used by Bethesda and the like that will really turn some heads... After years of subpar games, I would gladly play this again... So long as the graphics improved.
What can I say, this game, is still being played by many gamers until now, one of the best!! should be followed by all game makers today, its not all about graphics mates, its the whole package that makes the game a classic..

Comments:
Witcher games are awesome and i hope Witcher 3 will be awesome as well.
this game barely released and already this high on the list?wow that means in a few months will be 1st place
reminds me of DA 2 in a few ways if they keep doing this The Witcher 3 will be a crappy game
For story I'd say this goes top 10. It holds the singular claim of fame for causing me to blush when Geralt was working his shortsword and people were in the room while I was playing.
yea youre right i wanted myself 2 have more chapters i sont know about others but really it was short for me
you just can't compare rpg's like fallout 3 and witcher and other rpg's with each other.. it just can't.. every game has his own good things.. and bad things.. just deal with it..
I love the playthrough with Roche path to the point I felt like I need to finish my playthrough of Witcher 1 to have the end game save. After importing the save I noticed many new dialogs being available and game has changed. I took a stand with elves and Saskia and had an amazing experience. In summary, characters and the plots make you think about them after you finish playing, game is rich in detail and simply beautiful, but best thing it has going for it is atmosphere. You see a lot of political intrigues and betrayals in this game. That makes it a more interesting game rather than simple I am good and I kill all the bad people out there as what we normally get.
Only worthy rpg since 10 years old games(bg, torment, fallout)... It doesn't follow old schemas but try to improve and take things step furhter... I loved seriousness and awesome atmosphere in this game, playing on hard for first time and it wasn't really that hard... Can't believe that some people have problems on normal diff... You guys are really bad... Use dodge k? I blame progressing casualization and simplifying in industry for this.... Hopefully there are still gems like this one... This game totally beats many popular tittles released in last years, some more, some less, like oblivion skyrim nwn2 nwn1 da1 da2 fallou3, ME, AC IMO but sadly it doesn't get recognition it deserves.
Also it doesn't reek of console feel which is apparent in controls, ui and design in almost all newer games.
I'm a console gamer. Can't afford a high end PC but I am always envious of computer gamers for the quality of entertainment they have available. When they released a port of this acclaimed cRPG for Xbox I jumped at the chance to play it - and I'm so glad I did. First off, it is hands down the best looking game I have ever played on Xbox. They did an AMAZING job of tricking the ancient machine into thinking it could even run this game on medium. Add to that the excellent story and dialogue and you have a winner. The narrative is logical and follows cause and effect - it feels real or natural that people should act the way they do. The amount of difference that your choices make on the story is unparalleled in console gaming. The soundtrack is great. The combat isn't all that, but it is better than most recent 'action' RPGs. If you don't have this game there is now no excuse not to play it, even if you don't have a great PC! YOU MUST BUY THIS GAME! It is hard not to support developers like CD Projekt Red, who are practically begging for you to love them. Compare their business practices and policies to those of BioWare...
After The Witcher i was really keen on playing this game, but the fighting system was just so annoying that i gave up after the first chapter. I really hope that the old fighting system will be taken again in the Witcher 3.
After DAO and DA II this was my third RPG and initially had mixed emotions as I'm not a fan of QTE's and ending was ?? However, I did enjoy dialogue and found main characters, for the most part compelling. What really turned me on to the games was the free update for older owners of the game and also look forward to the April 2012 free update release for pc users when the Xbox version comes out.
best game EVER!!! most beautiful rpg ever, great storyline with different endings and different places - depends on your behaviour where which places you see and which not, best characters I've ever seen, funny dialogs and it doesnt ever get boring!
awesome game, sad it was so easy, i played on the hardest difficulty, at first it is a challenge, u rly have to plan ur tactics, after the 3rd chapter i think, it was too damn easyyy
great game, beautiful graphics, crazy choices. however, because of its length dragon age origins and skyrim should be rated higher.
Wow I was really amazed by that game. Story-wise this game is same level of interest if not better than assassins creed series.
Its Best RPG i have ever played. incredible graphics.
It had greater level of impression on me than when dragon age origins came out.
10+/10
diablo 2 < Dragon age 2 < Dragon Age Origins < Witcher 2
there is Baldurs Gate game that i havent played, and witcher
To beat this game, Blizzard and Bioware Betheda and others would have to work really hard
Very nice game indeed, one of the best i played, although it can't comepete with the first witcher, it's much less RPG and much more hack and slash.
Good game, nice graphics. The ending and chapter 3 as a whole left a lot to be desired though, this game deserved a more epic ending. Chapters 1 and 2 are absolutely brilliant and offer the best of what RPG's currently have to offer.
Its a great game, considering you are a dedicated gamer keeping up with the expencive newcoming technology. For some of us, its too much to constantly upgrade the machine.
Sorry, but without a powerful machine I can't review it, so I m giving it a thumbs down. The point of making games is to make them available for everyone, not just for the wealthy.
amazing game, this is one of the few rare games that are actually worth paying for
Well, that's a beautiful game, but I still prefer the original.
This game is a "must play" for anyone who enjoy rpg. Simple as that, PLAY IT!
has good design and atmosphere, but it was much too short and the most time hack´n slay. the skills are also very simpel and you dont need the most of them. so a funny game for 20 hours but could be much better rpg
Increadible game, already passed it, but I'm really curious what would have happened if I said, chose and did other things in game. There are so many ways of playing it + you can load your story from The Witcher!
Dialogs are really cool too, I played polish version, so I'm not sure how english one looks like, but I'm sure they wouldn't spoil this brand.

Innovative concept: Guns vs. Magic. And totally awesome otherwise.
Comments:
How can you compare Arcanum with Diablo or even Dragon Age???
I for one prefer games like TES,Gothic,Dragon Age and others instead of games like Diablo, not that games like Diablo arent ok but RPGs are the best.
Except for the graphics and the real time combat (the turn by turn made it better for me personally) it's all around the best and most original RPG ever (look for exemple how you had to treat your compagnons! What other RPG has ever done that?). My my, I feel olf when I look at those so called RPG's of this time... For those who've never heard of this game: poor pseudo-RPG-souls :)
I totally agree with the comment down here. Troika was one of the best game designers ever (Vampire masquerade: bloodlines is also a gem!). And if the RT combat was bopring, indeed, the Turn by turn option maked it really better. It's really a shame that games aren't made like this anymore!
(part 2)but rather took on different roles and went around exploring the world, getting to know the people in it, and doing whatever I felt like doing. That's another bonus for this game, the open world - it feels so huge that most RPGs seem like tiny 5 minute demos in comparison, there's so much to do that after 11 years of owning the game I'm still far from having completed every quest and job in the game, or having tried out all of the character combinations - and believe me, I've tried! The music is stunning, and while the graphics themselves aren't amazing in most areas the buildings for one were very well drawn in my opinion and some of the game areas are stunningly beautiful to walk through. The character customisation is another huge pro for the game as there really seem to be limitless ways to play it, it really pains me to play games limited by class systems now after having played something with so much freedom in how you build your character. You can be anything from a seductive beautiful young lady who goes about seducing and charming those around to get her way, to a beefy half-ogre ex-bodyguard who beats the hell out of his enemies usually only ever needing his fists, to a Panari worshipper who practices magickal healing, to a herbalist, to a mechanic, to a gun-wielding bandit, to an evil wizard necromancer to.. well lets just say if I continued this list we'd be here all day.
I'd even go so far as to say this is is my favourite game from all genres, and I've played a *lot* of games.
If you're reading this and are thinking "What the hell is this game and why is it in this list, I've never heard of it" - do yourself a favour and check it out. Give it a chance too, the graphics and the combat aren't that good, but if you get past the first hour or two of gameplay you'll find yourself in love and hooked for a very long time to come.
Here's to hoping Kickstarter leads to Arcanum 2 finally coming to life! :D
(part 1) Seeing something like Dragon Age: Origins rated higher than a gem like Arcanum makes me feel sorry for the newer generation of gamers who missed out on games like this. Don't get me wrong, DA:O is decent game, but the whole sort of aim of the RPG genre is to bridge the gap between games and a good book - letting you become a part of those epic storylines you were hooked into with each novel you read.
Most modern RPGs are more like fantasy-FPSes, there is very little in the way of story or depth, not much dialogue, and just a huge focus on combat. Older games like Arcanum might not have pulled off the combat side of the game quite so well but it was made up for limitlessly with the amazing storyline and atmosphere that really made you feel a part of this fantasy world.
If you're a fan of steampunk there's even more reason to check this game out - this is hands down the best steampunk game I've ever played by a long shot (there are some older gems, but at least having *slightly* nicer graphics really added to Arcanum's immersion over some of those).
It's also my favourite RPG by a long way and the only game I've ever found with quite so much replayability, I've owned the game for 11 years and spent probably over 1000 hours in total on it, and it never really got boring. I've played many of the other (debatable to some) "greats", from every Bioware RPG from BG1 to Mass Effect 3, to the Witcher series, the Elder Scrolls series all the way from Arena to Skyrim, Fallout 1, 2, 3 and New Vegas, Vampire: The Masquerade, Planescape: Torment, the Wizardry series, the Might & Magic series, Deus Ex, Drakensang, Divine Divinity, Ultima, etc.. Arcanum comes out top for me, every time, by a very long way.
The story and setting are fantastic, the characters really make you feel for them, the towns and cities are bustling with life and so many things for you to do, to the point that many of my saves never even went very far with following the "main quest"
Arcanum has a lovely world, a fantastic character creation system, a more than decent story and some wonderful mechanics straight out of BG and Fallout. It could've been a contender. Unfortunately, they forgot to make the combat work properly. 9/10 if you enjoy playing as a tank. Otherwise...
Victorian steampunk married with magic using and their child is called Frankenstein. Arcanum ; Strange High School experiment gone horribly wrong. Storyline is also very weak and uninteresting. Not worth the fifth place. In my #5 is the Ancient Domains Of Mystery (ADOM) which is way better than this Obscura game.
Greatest game ever made. Arcanum 2 on Skyrim engine would be great idea.
My first RPG! I was bedazzled and did me fall in love with RPG-games!
the options available for game-play were huge compared to anything of its time. the concept was brilliant. admittedly graphics were not very varied but they were very scenic. still a good game and I wish there would be released another one. I am glad to see that many people share my opinion of this game
i dont know what game is this but in several months or so this game will have a lesser rank let me tell you
(now youre all saying: wtf? it has horrible graphics!!, and ill tell you this, it was released on 2001)
Umm not too much rose taint? Graphics of this game were deemed bad even at release compared to bg/torment etc...
hmm personally i couldn't immerse into this game, bad ui, bad combat, boring music and landscapes. It just bored me to death, idk... Maybe i will give it another try in future... But now i think its overrated
MUSIC= 10/10
STORY=10/10
GAMEPLAY=8/10
VISUALS=9/10 (now youre all saying: wtf? it has horrible graphics!!, and ill tell you this, it was released on 2001, and the landscapes are breathtaking, the awesome portraits, cool effects too, although ill admit the graphics were a bit outdated.)
OVERALL= THE BEST GAME EVER!!!!!!! 2479 out of 10.... only with arcanum
also did you see what brian fargo did with wasteland, with the kickstart.....?..... he got a fan made funding, wouldnt that be awesome for a future arcanum 2?!?!?? BUT..... with the same team that made the first arcanum. and nothing else.
so...... BEST GAME EVER!
I'm surprised this game is so high up. I didn't know so many ppl appreciate the game. This is good. I love this game and I miss the steampunk genre in games in genera. I wish there were more games like this. But like someone said earlier, I wish you could be evil with less consequences.
I love this game. The Idea of magic vs. technology is truly unique. And the character background instead of class-system is also great. I've played through the main store more times than I can count. The world editor adds great opportunites of modding. To bad that this game has so few modders. I used to make few mods myself, but it simply was too much work since you have to add every single tile to the map.
Arcanum is unquestionably one of the best RPGs put out on the PC, and it manages it in spite of carrying a cross of a single, huge failure. Great questing, dialogue options, SUPERB character development (from a levelling point of view), in a rich and inventive world. On these levels it sits amongst the greats of Fallout and Baldur's Gate.
Sadly, especially given the wonderful approach to levelling (magic vs technology), the combat in Arcanum is terrible. Most of the starting class types and builds are rendered impossible, since the engine makes you the tank for everything. Enemies will charge past your allies no matter how they hit them in order to get to you. That means if you want to be any sort of mage/ranged fighter (which should offer so much), you had better be substantially overlevelled or that game over screen will be appearing time and time again. I can only hope that I played an unpatched version, and that others have missed this.
I had such high hopes, but it's terribly overrated. The combat is repetitive and boring. Half of the dialogue options don't lead anywhere, and if you dare to be aggressive/insulting/evil in your dialogue choices, you end up fighting entire towns with no way to avoid it. File under: could have been amazing, but comes up short.
Absolutely love the game, but evry time I play it, the game crashes around level 50. So, I've never been able to finish it. Still, an excellent experience.
Really, the best game ever. Even now I play it from time to time. Show those bastards...hmm good hit sir.
It's a shame that Arcanum have no continuation, I mean, I havent played a game, which was even close to Arcanum. From excellent storyline to great music by Ben Houge and really astonishing and very succesful concepy "guns vs magic", placed in late 19th century. With no doubt the best game I've ever played, probably I'll say same thing after next 20 years. Really looking foward for sequel.
The combat is just awful, the movement is terrible, but the setting, and some kind of "unique charm" makes me want to finish this.
Should be rated higher this is the game that made me love rpgs!
Great concept.
Like many above have said..can't understand why something similar hasn't been made recently.
Party members are a bit thick and hard to control but this has a charm all of it's own.
If you like a Jules Verne type theme this will put a hook in you. May be a bit unweildy for the Baldur crowd but highly addictive all the same.
Plenty of good humour injected too. VGG.
Wow, I read the comments on here. So I went and downloaded this Upgraded fan version on pirate bay and let me tell you... this is the best RPG I have ever played!!!!
All that needs to be said about this game, is that its like Elderscrolls series and baulder gate series mixed together. The story is great too, with some actually good voice acting. All in all this game is pure awesomeness!!!
bugs aside, this is one of the best games i ever played.. leveling up is tough and you only get a single point for your stats per level.. the story and the setting was an innovation.. i wonder why developers did not try create something similar in most recent rpg's...
I just finished it again, and lets just say, This game was and STILL is brilliant!!
So many different varying options of speech depending on the character you make.
SO many different types of character to make, and EACH effects the storyline quite a bit.
There are a THOUSAND possibilities of character creation, and so many ways of solving any mission or problem in the game!
And the characters you meet to join you on the quests, (especially the ones with voices) make you feel more 'drawn into the plot'.
Needs to be higher in the list, but sadly, it didnt get the acclaim it deserved because to many "Hardcore loyalists" decided to stick with BG or NWN...
(Heres a hot little tip, step outside the circle of COMMON gaming, and you might find some treasure! This baby rocks!!
Yes my favorite all-time. Your choices were limitless. I played it so many ways. Arcanum, Morrowind, Baldur's Gate 2, and Neverwinter Nights get my top four votes.
One of the best rpg games ever made. Kind of also one of the most difficult to play. Enough said, that my first character needed to be scrapped and I had to start new game when I briefly understood what I did wrong during creation :) Very interesting story, technology vs magic? Nice. Often contains funny elements, but other than that it seems to be one of the most serious games of the type. Vote! :)
Wow, so low on the list, yet such a better game then many above it. Granted, it was really hard to beat if you went the technology route, but one thoroughly awesome game. One of the few RPGs after the "gold box" D&D series I played through more than once. Hey, speaking of that, where are the "gold box" games... can't be a real discussion of best ever with them, and maybe Bard's Tale and Wasteland
well arcanum is ...unique and i mean that literally its the only game that at its time could have random things attacking you it had an amazing story and there is litterally anything to do in it if i wanted to (and i tried brw) you can kill the entire town you start in and kill every1 everywhere else and still technically win the game the only bad thing was graphics and somewhat short storyline
all in all i would give it a 9.8 out o 10 on the best rpg scale as of 2010 back in its time i would give it a 30 out 10
Yes, this game was one of the greatest of all time, but didn't get as much publicity as it deserved. A remake of this would do very well in the current RPG market.

WTH this deserves to be the first! Best RPG i ever played by far!
cant say its a crap or a great game because i dont like and dont play this kind of games
I've played a lot of RPG, including all the ones listed above and i still consider that this game should get no.1 . Skyrim in elephant poo compared to Fallout2 !!!
this is an obvious no. 1. And the best thing about it is the depth, mood and beliveablity of the world. It is grim and dark, full of brutality, drugs, sex and villans - and not because it might be attractive to some, it is simply plausible and feels real. The turn-based combat is excellent. I would gladly pay & play no 3 in the same isometric enviroment. Finally, it proves elves, dragon and magic aren't a necessity in rpgs - any setting might prove succesful as a role-playing arena, provided it features a decent story, detailed and plausible world and interesting gameplay mechanics. Let's hope Wasteland 2 will bring more of those to life.
Best RPG of all time, period. Makes almost everything else on the list look like iphone shovelware
This game, and the original, will always be tied for my number one spot of all time best games. I have played them both over and over in an attempt to see and do everything at least once, and I still haven't covered it all. These games are what defined the medium for me in terms of writing, mechanics and depth, and I am oh so sorely disappointed when comparing modern RPGs to that standard.
Kicking Myke Tyson in the nuts over, and over, and over, and over and over and over until he throws up and forfeits the fight, that and aiming for peoples eyes, and well ok the entire game, The Entire Game, make this game great. Classic.
I started with a demo of fallout when it first came out and I liked it. Then a few years later, I found and bought the then newly released Fallout 2...I was hooked. Afterward I bought F1, BOS, F3, and downloaded a ton of community made mods. Now after so many years, I stil play Fallout 2 through at least once a year. It was the game that admitted me to the genre, followed by Baldur's Gate and the oldie Dark Sun.
Unforgettable characters, dialogue and questlines, a gritty, punk-leather-wearing world that never ceases to amaze, and the best tactical battle system I've come across in all my years of gaming.
There's just nothing else that quite compares to Fallout, 1 or 2. Full tenner from me!
I was 10 years old when fallout 1 came out and 12 when fallout 2 came out, I had some shoddy windows 95 computer that cost my mom 1,800$ and those two games literally changed my views on what I thought were good games. The first RPG games I ever played and still to this day the best i've ever played
Fallout 1 and 2 are older games, but are truly amazing. Once you get into the game it is hard to stop. It creates profound, cruel picture of the post-apocalyptic world. I loved dealing with gangsters in Reno and having words with President on Enclave platform. Despite the older graphics its a game worth playing even in 2012
Fallout is probably my favorite series, but I have a hard time choosing a favorite Fallout. This is definitely in contention. I love the tactical combat, I love the humor, I love the writing, I love the dark, ugly nature of the world, and I love the choices. Can't really get into Fallout 1 at this point, so this is where it all started for me.
Why is this the best RPG in my opinion? It is only RPG game i played where you can finish main quest by not killing single person
this is by far the best rpg i know of, i was introduced to fallout through the fallout 1 demo (which puts you in junktown in the middle of a gang war) didnt see the series again untill a few years later (i was 9 i think) when i saw fallout 2 in the store, i liked the demo of fallout 1 so much that i bought it with all my allowance. it was the best game purchase until now (im 24) . the world was aery adn the content was well made. although it had alot of bugs in that time it was challenging and fun to explore the post apocalyptic world with its diverse characters and free path story. 9.5/10 for sure (planescape torment 9/10)
this is in my opinion the best rpg of all time. visuals werent super, but the story was so good and multiple endings made it non linear and a treat to keep on replaying the game. the FL1 & 2 is on top of there. FL3 sucked and just made everything arcadish. Too bad Van Beuren (i may have spelled this wrong) never pushed through. True FL1 and 2 fans would know how far fallout 3 was to the first two.
Never liked fallout 1 that much but this sequel completely killed the series for me
ah,yes, the good old times...
just as good as the first part and even better!
where do you get that nowadays?!
anyone ever played the 'stupid' approach?
This is where I begane my Fallout adventures, I often wish the graphics pigs of today would have the depth of this bad boy. I was so happy that beth picked up the IP for this series, so let's not complain about FO3 because we were all happy this series was taken off the scrap heap. Two words Porn Star. lol
Definitely the best of the Fallout series. If Fallout 1 weren't to have been timed, I'd probably nearly rate it the same.
Best cRPG ever. Awesome story, of course SPECIAL :) and music! Old, but still alive!
Fallout 2 and Baldur's Gate 2 battle for the title of best western/PC RPG, to my mind. Postives: The best character creation/leveling up system I know, wonderful combat and inventory development, great "feel", and the quests...the quests deserve talking about, because Fallout 2's quests are the reason old farts like me (aged 26) get so frustrated with modern "RPG"s. Fallout 2's quest mapping was extensive. REALLY extensive. I'm talking about multiple ways to complete almost every quest (and not just "good"/"evil" ways like so many modern games), quests that developed dependant upon what you and your character knew, expanding and satisfying quests that frequently went beyond "Find this/Kill that", and best of all an ending that took into account all you actions, in each town! Downsides? Well, there are bugs to it, and since when they occur they tend to be fatal it is a game that rewards saving often. Then again, the last time I played it, the thing didn't crash once. These days, it can take a little tinkering (ON MODERN PCs A MAP FIX IS REQUIRED OR IT WILL NOT PLAY PROPERLY) to get the best from it. I guess the only other thing is if you're expecting a JRPG with characters who fall in love and learn from their experiences you'll have to look elsewhere...but that's Fallout. Great Game, up there with the best, if not the best. ------9.5/10-----
Tho my favorite singleplayer RP game of all time I don't have much to say about it. The Fallout series got me into RP games and after 13 years nothing has been able to match this fantastic game.
All I can say is I feel sorry for those who didn't experience it back then. With todays graphic advancements it would be impossible to properly enjoy this game.
I like better the Baldurs Gate saga, but i have to admit that Follout, and especially Follout 2, are great RPG's.
In follout you have to do several choices, real choices wich preclude other possibilities: so the replay value become really good!
It's really buggy, but a good number of the bugs shouldn't happen if you play the game in a fairly normal way. Still, the buginess is tough to forgive since some of the bugs can have weird effects on the difficulty and do totally unfair things. (like the car sometimes disappearing when it runs out of fuel) The storyline was decent, and the writing was wonderful. You get the feeling of a nuclear wasteland but with some great humor. Gameplay is good and difficulty can be easy or hard depending on how you play through it. It's always a lot easier on the second and subsequent playthroughs, though. Fair warning to anyone who's only played FO3 or New Vegas...this game is old school, that is, its harder, less forgiving, and has a more complicated and probably less balanced stat system than the rpgs you'll be used to.
I can't agree with bugs. With current (old official) patches it is perfectly playable. Hell, even without those. And If you add community patches and mods the game just KILLS you on the spot with it's greatness :) It is the best RPG game ever in my book. NO! Best GAME ever. I simply love it. Played it all the way 14 times, not counting COUNTLESS times where I started but didn't finish :) Also with creazy challanges like use fists only etc :)
Great gameplay and great concept, but too many bugs, npc ai horrible, and difficulty too low. No game can be perfect, but it can come close if it constantly evolves. Sadly, only an mmorpg can generate enough revenue to achieve this.
"WAR.....WAR NEVER CHANGES....." and neither does the epic franchise of the FALLOUT series. created the year i was born but wasnt really made untill the first real game which was awesome, but still no comparison to FALLOUT 2 which< in my mind as well as many others is still one of if not the greatest game ever created.--ZACH, CA
Imho NO game ever reached the atmosphere of Fallout 1 & 2. Combined with the dark humour and it's complete unlinearity it's unbeaten still today. Fallout 3 was a great job, but the atmosphere and the humour doesn't compare to 1 & 2.

I loved this game and was my favorite RPG, and first RPG I have ever played. Ever since I was little, I Have loved this game and recommend to all RPG fans, After all it is very diverse and has lots of monsters, items and artifacts to make it a very good classic RPG.
Comments:
Yeah, and all of a sudden you're attacked by a minotaur and you practically start weeping 'cause you're not strong enough, you run like hell and try to revive your dead groupmembers in the next town and then they turn out to be zomies :D, or when you forgot to sleep :D. This game is epic and maybe the best M&M-game ever!
I still remember being stucked in the labyrinthical Dwarven crypts...
This is one of the best, indeed! M&M 8 and 9 were the decline of this game (and I don't even mention 'Dark Messiah'...), but VII is at the top!
I think it's one of the best RPG's ever made! Graphics isn't everything and this game (series) should be higher than Witcher or TES series. Just my opinion...
is there any game that is similar style to the M&M series. AS these are the best kind of RPGs
Great series, Played all of them and have to say that 6 just beats world of xeen to best of the series, 7 was good but just didnt have the same atmosphere as 6. The pyramid kicked ass.
Certainly the best M&M of the series (I played throught 4 to 8, didn't manage to stand more than a few minutes in 9).
One of the bests, which should be in place of MM6 in here. Graphic is old, but the game it self is so well done, that you wont even pay attention to graphics after a few hours. The only important thing is to play it without hardware acceleration - wrong colors.
best and my first rpg. sad that there is no sequel with better graphics, but with the same lore//lvl/skill/party system

Hello, in my opinion this is the gest rpg game ever. Soryline is very good, but the most importanat is the atmosphere.
Now I'm waiting for a enhancend edition.
although i really like the game for what it is and has done for pc-rpging(and played it multible times oc), i think it DID have some downsides...the voiceacting could really have been better, wich is a huge thing, since every time you select a pc, it says something.
really very hard.(i like hard, but this sometimes was really unfair, especially the first time if you didnt know what a backup save is...)
the imo too limited leveling, almost only for dnd fans. but enough bad things about the prequel to one of the best games ever(consider they had some years to make the second, so it would be a shame for everyone involved if it was just like/ worse than the first). play it, hate it, and then love it for hateing it. and edwin is the coolest evil mage of all times.
A taste of what was to come, would be the catchphrase of the original Baldur's Gate. In terms of the fantasy realm, it was one of the most significant games of the time. Yet the original Baldur's Gate is hampered by problems that really spoil the experience. Firstly, it's one of the hardest RPGs I've experienced (on first playthrough), but not in a remotely good way. Like many D+D RPGs, you are the mercy of the dice and the "DM". In this case, the DM likes to stack things against you. If you play a wizard, the first enemies you meet can feasibly one-shot you about half of the time, and they'll hit you EVERY time. A fighter in full armour will be hit less and can take around 2-5 hits. Almost no combat can be won by strength of arms alone. It requires patience and planning which is great for the significant battles, but when you have even gibberlings chasing your fleeing tank while you fire missile weapons, it feels desperately unheroic. Then, for some absurd reason, the game includes a level cap halting you at around level 6/7 instead of reaching 10. Reaching level 7 in itself will not be accomplished without doing a lot of side-quests and levelling. On 3rd playthrough the game is relatively easy, but on the 1st it requires so much trial and error death as to make it completely miserable. All this said, there is a terrific engine and great concepts at work, and each and every flaw is removed in the sequel (which is hard in the right way). Yet the truth is, if you got this far without playing BG1, you're probably better off without it. 6/10.
Rpgs are supposed to suck you into the story and get your character or characters going interacting with npcs, solving mysteries, helping, searching, getting stronger and plus more loot. Baldur's Gate does all that and decisions made by the player affect npcs. The grandfather of the great rpgs and still one if not the best!
Never have been able to get into it. The writing is overwrought, and everyone sounds the same. I miss the in-depth characterizations of BG2, and would rather play that.
Lol this classic Role PG should be a lot higher :S
If my papa would be here he would yell: OUTRAGES!
Hah!
Simply Brilliant at the time. I still play it now, and get a kick out of kicking old Sarevok!
I think baldurs gate should be higher!
First of all, people still play this and enjoy it. its got 2d graphics which is unique, the characters are funny. Its style is amazing never seen a game like it, it was scary when I was younger. It was difficult and it was strategic not like modern games. Honestly people dont make games like this anymore.
"I will be the last! and you will go first!" - Sarevok Anchev
BG revived PC-RPGs, mid90s was a lean time thanks to Doom&Clones.
First game i ever played took me ages but this would be my number one i loved it to bits kinda literally... upset when it broke. anyway great series never sold me short a problem many games have today
A good rpg, indeed!
Maybe not the absolute best, and certainly not on par with the sequel, BG2.
But this game is what made BG2 possible, and a good portion of the innovations of Baldurs Gate 2 were already present here.
This was my first RPG, and after playing in in 2004 or 5, I spent alot of time and money looking for and trying games that would satisfy me the same way. I have found very very few. Yeah, there are newer games with awesome graphics, and fancier items and concepts. But they just dont match the addictive 2 million hours of gameplay for this one. I even got bored after a few years, but played it anyway for lack of a comparitive game. Fans of Baldurs Gate looking for an almost identical game, by pretty much the same company, at least snowblind studios, must also own Baldurs Gate two, Champions of Norrath, and Champions: Return to Arms. I owned all four and played them all equally, considering them four parts to the same game. The only games I have now with equal satisfaction are PC games as follows, as well as one PSP game. Titan Quest Gold is definately my modern Baldurs Gate replacement. Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 are manditory, as well as Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction expansion. Dungeon Sieg: Throne of Agony is another game I played for at least two years for hours a day (this is a PSP game). For the PSP I also enjoyed Valhalla Knights 1 and 2, although the battle system is a little different. Definately try these if you need to fill your Baldurs Gate fix but are getting bored with it.
definitly the grandfather of rpg's takes the d&d to the next lvl...it is weird not being at least in the top #3
7
Ah, the grandfather of the RPG as we know it. Play it now and you spray coffee over the screen laughing, but who doesn't remember it fondly. I blame it fair and square for the thousands of hours I've blown in front of my computers since playing this classic oldtimer. A great place to start kids off with an RPG.

I still secretaly hope too meet a girl like Lady Aribeth, one time :)
I've played about 40 rpg's and I can say that Nwn Hordes of the Underdark is the best rpg ever. It has huge replaying value and perfect indulging stoly. I've already played through it 7 times (including the main campaign and SoU) and even when I have some new awesome games on my shelf (like Mass Effect, Witcher, Dragon Age, Fallout) I don't choose them, I choose Nwn.
Come on! O.K. it's especially combat based and the story is way too linear, but the combat system was great, though without being a nasty Hack'n'Slash-game! It had some depth
I agree with this game being on the list for best RPG ever. Single player was a boring let down, however multiplayer was fantastic. Created a persistent world with my roommates years ago, went so far as to make brand new pictures and game rules to house the new items and crafting systems we designed, which makes this game permanently amazing, like UO, it will always be remembered as one of the greatest.
Neverwinter Nights is not a good single-player game. However, even after 10 years it remains the best platform for persistent worlds and private campaigns for D&D and online roleplaying in general. The toolset is amazing, it had a lot of support from Bioware for several years, and the playerbase is still large. There are several wonderful servers with high quality role-playing, and plenty of new content via HAKs and overrides.
I love the infinity games (baldurs gate and icewindale) but this just wasn't doing much for me. It was cool at first, but I thought it got way too repetitive. I prefer the beautifully detailed 2d rendering of the bg series, over bland, repetitive, 3d graphics... I have to admit I did like the game editor that came with it though, that was cool.
play the addons. no...play 'hordes of the underdark'.
seriously.
Definitely a great game with wonderful skill and equipment mechanics. They brought out the best in what the term "RPG" has to offer. They could have worked on NPC personalities (seems to be a common theme around RPGs--maybe they don't have the time or funding?).
BEST RPG GAME EVER !!!
i finished it with all characters and i should say only one bad thing about the game :
ending demo is a slide show.
Simply the best rpg ever...it incorporates the essence of a true rpg by including the game play of D&D (same as BG, but for 3.5 rules). I have played it since its inception through NWN2 and still currently play it, a time greater than 10 years.
Simply perfect, played with many classes, and i plan to do so few more times. The expansions are great too, and the tools that alow you to create add ons are briliant. First time i finished this game was with playtime of like 3 months, cool game and my top 1
so much fun to build your character from a harmless adventurer to a demigod. The camapigns became better every expansion and then there are countless of fanmades adventures and even mmo like servers.
this game is amazing, it is not just a game it is a background of any story can be written, this game has a powerful tool to create any world that can be imagined.. in fact there are many good player made mods that are far better than the official campaign.. that reminds me heroes 3
Took me forever to beat. Spirit shamans are awesome for the Mask of the betrayer but they suck once you get out of the caves becuase you cant take the bear gods axe so you get kill real fast when you enter the theatre unless you unleash practically all of your spells on the wizard controlling the golem and that takes a long time
Great game. An interesting plot, lots of side quests and equipments. With a very long campaign and two expansions, you will play it for months.
A must if you like D&D.
it was like the best game ever when it came out so it should at least be number 10
13.
the sequel to an awesome game, and lived up to the ante, any bad bug were QUICKLY fixed with patches, now its an almost bugless game
Comments:
The Mask of The Betrayer expansion pack was one of the greatest things I've ever played. The story was very indulging and deep. The main campaing was decent but I can't compare it to MOTB. Great and awesome game.
I agree and disagree with a lot of these comments, both positive and negative, but GIGANTIC thing that's been left out. MULTIPLAYER! Although it took ages to get things going like they were in the original (didn't launch with an autodownload feature, meaning persistent world files all had to be downloaded from 3rd party sites) it still came into it's own, and to this day is still populated. This is, to my knowledge, the ONLY true RPG of it's type to design it, from the start, to allow individuals design and create their own persistent multiplayer worlds in such a manner. Although the single player campaigns were lacking in some areas (I personally rather enjoyed the first two... though the third was a failure as a result of trying to implement too much, without getting the basics.), they were still lengthy, well made, and had a decent story with many options to make the storyline your own. Still, I know I've personally ranked as many hours online with this as a WoW addict at points in my life.
I really looked out for this game, after finishing NWN many times. In the beginning I thought it was great, with enhanced graphics and more powers. But it seemed that was the problem, too many skills! In fact an Icewind Dale III would have been better, I guess...
Best rpg ever.Storyline is great, character too.The only thing that wasn't good was the camera. The rest is perfect 5.
PFFF yes I agree that the main campaign of this game wasn't the greatest; but you can't say a thing until you've played the custom campaigns. This game was a pain to get running but once you did I had no problems from then on. It was a beautiful game and i liked the camera. I had it glued on top down and could look in first person with the click of a button. I have nothing against this game and think it should be higher up.
The person above me has nailed it. + WORST... CHARACTER... DESIGN... EVER!!!!! From beginning to end I couldn't believe the awful writing of the story and the characters. This game is pretty much the anathema for the whole idea of this list. How this ranks that high is honestly beyond me...
A pretty clumsy execution of an RPG. How did this make the top 10?
I don't know what the guy above me is doing wrong, but I'm playing NWN2 just fine in windows 7. The game reminds me very much of KOTOR with graphics and characters, but I find the very detailed DND recreation is very complicated and if you don't already know the rules, it'd be difficult to adjust to them, as they don't seem to work well in a video game.
This game and its prequel(nwn 1) just do not work on modern windows, now as now i have w7 on all my machines, and cannot play any of them, impossible to patch or repair...very very bad support from theyre producers, and a shame it is not comunicated that they need old OS to be run. Probably i should have played them in theyr time, but i was totally freaked out by DaoC at the time, and than by WoW, now that i'm seeking some good single player rpg to distress the boredom WoW has fallen into, i cant find any real good game aside the last i played before starting to play at mmorgs, BG 2. It 's still the best out of dozens, even Dragon Age in all its forms seemed terribly pointless and unappealing after few hours...i hoped that NWN could do it, but they're not running, no matter what i do.
Seems i must play BG2 again, i prefer it to actual WoW, Dragons Age, Oblivion etc...
hahaha thats funny!
story's just like that...funny...
might have been nice, if you hadnt foreseen the end after a third of the game. i like skilling...and d&d too, and then you get this silversword thingie? wtf?! or just make your own weapon after 4 hrs of play and keep it till the end...
still it was (IMO) better than nwn1, but worse than the addons(any) of the nwn series. and way too easy.
i miss deekin.
trying to fit 4 party memebers and all their pets through a single doorway is about as much a challange as you'll get out of this game.
Quite enjoying this. It is very similar to Dragon Age. Anybody that can't get enough of that take note..this may be what your looking for until DAO2 arrives. Be warned though, I had to do quite a bit of homework on D&D and did find the D&D rules a pain in the neck to understand for a D&D noob like myself. e.g. some of the class limitation skills just don't let me play it the way I want to.
I can see why DAO dummed down a bit to make this type of game easier to get to grips with.
Seriousley, the cam/camera or whatever you wanna call it sucked!
I just got this game and I believe that the game is beautiful and the animations are great. The camera is better for DAO though. I beat DAO before this so playing around with this camera is annoying. I do prefer the character creation. I max out every game I play, including crysis, and I think that this game is one of the more beautiful games environmentally speaking. Character textures are def a little weak but the game DID come out over 2 years ago.
Nope, the most disappointing game ending I've ever seen is for Eye of the Beholder 1. No graphics., only a text message to congratulate you for your victory then it promptly drops you back to the DOS prompt.
Thought it was a great game right up until they decided to use an intern to read the ending while a crappy slide show ran. I don't really think I've ever been that disappointed in a game ending.
I just ordered the game for $10. I will rate it and write when I'm finished
Your kidding right? It took them years to solve the bugs in this game, the ending sucked for the original, the first expansion was good but the second sucked. This game deserves to be in the middle of the pack for RPG's, not the top.

Its was a good game for that time, its soo huge you can never get bored from it,adn if you think Morrowind its huge try this one but the graphics are not that great for those who are not familiar with old games but if would have Skyrim graphics this game would be the god of the rpgs.
I get to a guy in a house and talk with him. He tells me this: "Get the diamond in the cave to the North, and get it back to me for a nice reward. You won't regret it." I get to the cave, get the diamond. I come back to the guy that gave me the quest. First thing he says: " Who are you?" This is Daggerfall. :P
best moment in this was sitting in the dark, arriving at daggerfall in the day... sleeping through the night then going outside to steal everything i could.. only to be confronted by the dead kings ghost. luckily i levitated over the wall and did a runner. i appreciated the attempt they made with this game. huge scope considering the time. Unfortunately the game was bug ridden and very very generic after the first few quests were completed.. still.. probably the first sandbox rpg ever. and still probably larger in scale than anything since.
Although it's all mostly randomly-generated and some dungeons can be unplayable, this is the biggest game world ever created. Besides, some hidden things like the Daedra summoning calendar are insanely cool. I don' tthink I've ever put as many hours into one game as I did with Daggerfall. No regrets! I wish Bethesda was less commited with graphics competition and set out to build a world of this scope again.
Would have been a great game but for the bugs. Couldn't even finish it - thesoftware didn't load the "Dust of Restful Death" for me to pick up and all the helpdesk could advise was playing the game again from scratch ... as if i had another 30 hours to waste !.
Still the best rpg I've played, loved how your weapon motions moved with the mouse... the character customization has yet to be equalled... This is a game from a time when games were sold as a whole, not the expansion pack this and expansion pack that era of crap we are in now. Definately deserving of a remake if I ever knew of one.. (Planescape Torment, was a great game, but I think this one still tops it.)
Still the BEST TES GAME. Without any doubts. Not even MW can match DF regarding quality and special touches.
Too Damn Big. If it wasn't for fast travel, this game would be unplayable
My favorite RPG of all time without a doubt and at the same time a game that only scratched the surface of its potential, its a crime against humanity that no one has even attempted to perfect this formula.
the reassion games like this is so low. Is because the hardcore gamers, aka pc gamers are growing up and not having time to play as many good game like this anymore. So the teenage and younger adults are left playing half baked games that are so bad that we end up with a list like this. I am so sad.
When you come running through the night, with sound of footfalls and the light of distant windows come into view. It almost feels like you've come home. They should turn that vast world into a MMORPG.
The first 1st person RPG I played and didn't want to vomit all over. Storyline, complete freedom, ridiculous amount of side quests, and the game didn't ever have to end. One of the best certainly
The best RPG by far. Just too bad it didn't age well. Still the ultimate experience RPG wise.
Daggerfall was a great game, but I recently tried to go back and play it after Bethesda made it free... There are too many bugs and the game is almost unplayable due to the control schemes we are used to now. A remake would be great, but it still has a fond place in my memories.

Turn based RPG is what I'm really missing these days!!!!!!!!!
to the writer before:
welcome to the middle-age :/
get your gatorade, middle-agers! XD
This is it. This is the Great Western RPG - and much like the Great American Novel its genious and level of craft are often claimed but seldom achieved. This game should be in the top ten, and the fact that it isn't makes me a sad panda. Unfortunately, modern gamers prefer block buster homogenizations, and most people see 'turn based combat' and run straight to the latest shallow game with poor writing and absent mechanics as long as it panders to the same primordial parts of the brain that allow Michael Bay movies to turn a profit. Black Isle and early BioWare were the grand Roman Empire just before the decline - now everything is left to the mindless hordes, and they get exactly what they deserve in terms of intelligence and quality.
This is not best of the role playing games. this best of all games of all times.
Anyone who says this game is a chore, turn based is a joke, etc. has only tried to play this game now in the modern era and of course with the skyrims and oblivions it wont match up. But you have to go back and think how this game was to a 13 year old when i first put the game in and downloaded it. I remember going through the game and just being overwhelmed by the multitude of tings you could do and say to people. It truly is an experience ill never forget and why I think this and fallout 2 should be higher on the list.
Good game but hugely overrated, and very difficult to play now.
It came out pretty much the same time as Ocarina of Time... nuff said.
People who shy away from turn-based combat are not real RPG fans. RPG's live and die by their level of depth, and turn-based combat systems reflect the depth of a good RPG in a way that an action-based combat system never could. Fallout is an RPG par excellence, and the fact that its combat system is turn-based just makes it less marketable to addled FPS fans, and doesn't make it any less of a game.
i understand that it's a classic from '97 but i find it stale and hard to get into. turn based combat is a chore.
ill just keep posting till it is #1 :)
as it is supposed to be!!
seriously...
fallout 2 was better, but it wouldnt have been at all without the first.
i wont spoil this here by mentoning the shameful, evil and soulless....
but i liked new vegas...a bit.... still not a quark as good as the very great F1+2.
damn, i really hated the overseer at the end...
I agree, this is so totally crap. Haven't gotten the chance to play Fallout 3 but Fallout 1 and 2 is so GOOD. 22nd place is so crap
This list is terrible. Fallout at 27 is blasphemy. Fallout 1 and 2 should both be in the top 10. Fallout 3 should be further behind.
"There are two kinds of people in the world, my friend. Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."
Holy Crap this is one of the all time best rpg games of all time highly recomend buying it not up to standards graphics wise now a days but story and rpg aspect surpass fallout 3

This is TOP 1 RPG ever, elder of scrools is childsplay comparing to this one. Everybody who didnt try it i recomend it definetly. Just finish first chapter and the story will suck u in to that game. Quest system is just crazy, you can complete 1 quest in many ways and it will afect future quests. Awesome game!
This is my first and favourite RPG.
Even now, i still enjoy playing this game.
i loves the Pirate and Bandit bases and the quests from them were great how you had to show your strenght and cleverness to become a bandit and your support and loyalty to become a pirate just awesome
When i start playing a bland and uninteresting rpg, i delete it, i reinstall Gothic 2 and i am thankful for its wonderful existence! Best RPG ever!
to bad about Gothic 3 but G1 and 2 will remain the best rpg ever for me they are just such great games and G4 its ok too but i hope Gothic 5 will be the best
High quality game, should be higher up in the list. But Gothic 1 is better.
The best rpg I ever played. Along with the Gothic I, these are the most climatic games people can witness.
best RPG ever this should be in the first place everything is awesome about this game a masterpiece
i havent experiences as many bugs as some would say only a few and they where nothing compared with this amasing game
the best prg a ever played and i played many 2 see the difference in them it deserves a place in the first places and the ones who sustained that this game sucks its because its 2 difficult for them and thats a rpg should be not only 2 click as a madmen on a enemy and 2 expect he will die easily sorry for me english
aside from the great graphics(for its time), sound/voices/dialogue, feeling and very handmade world, and not least, the story, what makes this game very special to me is the fighting system. no other rpg i know of adds in the required "action" for a computer 3rd person 3d game like gothic did! and the controls for that...press space, keep pressed ctrl, and swing= left...right...front...front...ah snap, cant...okay lets try again...makes you actually practice "your" combo to attack the next wolf with :)
and all that with only my left hand, amazing!!
Theres no opinion, theres just Gothic II as the best RPG in the history of video-games.
41?? WTF
This is THE best ever, not just the best rpg but the best game
Now this is a joke..! Gothic 2 is the BEST game EVER and I believe I played every single game listed here and its at rank 41...come on..that'S a joke and everybody knows. there ain't anything that comes even close to Gothic 2. maybe Risen...the feel....
Definitely the most successful game when it comes to "feel". The most successful athmosphere of all times. Dialouges are great, people are really "living" , soundtracks are awesome. Nothing is like walking with a torch in your hand at night, looking at the stars. Great map, great story, the city, inns, farms etc are designed very well. great combat system despite of the criticisms about being so hard. a pure rpg, definitely the best rpg ever. definitely the best athmosphere, the monastery or the dead harpy inn are unmatched at making the gamer feel the game. you feel like living in khorinis in this game, poor people who try to make a living (through honest and not-so-honest ways), dirty people who bully you (because you are so weak at the start of the game) greedy prostitutes or innkeepers, helpful farmers who give you meal, the ignorant "elite" people and much more are in this game. you make friends and enemies depending on your choices and you really feel happy when you see a friend, or verse when you see an enemy. whatever you do, you will play the game as if you are our nameless hero. you will get anxious when walking in the forest, you will get happy when you see a friendly place at the night, and the most important thing, there will always be a bitter taste in your mouth, and when you finish the game, you will understand why this game's name is gothic, because of that bitter taste that exists no matter what you did. you wont save the world, you wont put an end to an evil thing. in the end you will realise you actually did nothing. nothing good or nothing bad. no heroic pure light will shine at the end, there is only one thing, the bitter taste.
IMHO best combat system until mount and blade arrived, superior to gothic 3, - you actualy feel like you are swinging the blade not just clicking on enemy (in that regard i find it better than morrowind-oblivion),great atmosphere and story- (not overstreched, almost movie like)
I didn't get any bugs either and the controls didn't bother me. Gothic 2 has the best designed scenery in any RPG I've ever played. I'm not talking just about graphic quality, it's the way forests, caves and castles are designed, it's just a joy to explore. Those shadowbeasts' lairs are the spookiest thing ever. Bethesda can't come close in world design or mood, although their games are technically much superior. Gothic 3 has good world design as well, but it adds a ton of bugs more and wasn't quite as enjoyable. 2 is is one of the best ever, for me.
I wasn't my first RPG,..first was Gothic 1, which opened gates to a great virtual world of orcs, magicians, wild animals and one of the most addictive, thrilling plots and a game-play. Gothic 2, in my wonder, even surpassed its predecessor, with amazing music...music btw one of the most important features of a good rpg..para mi! Great control, as was mentioned above, every move should be timed perfectly, which makes this game more challenging!
The Gothic games are the best RPG series out there. That is not even a matter of opinion. You feel a part of every pixel of this game.
this game is most defiantly the best RPG game i ever played especially the night of the raven expansion
i kept playing this game over and over but i never get bored of it it's one of the most difficult games i ever played i like RPG's the most and the new games like witcher 2 and dragon age 2 were not good enough in my opinion
this game has many choices to make , many spells and magic runes and the world is truly huge
if you want to play it I suggest that you play the gothic 2 GOLD edition it includes the night of the raven expantion
and to the smart comments about the fighting style you should've noticed the game options
the fighting is very unique ,I'm not talking about the variety of combos or archery I'm talking here about the fact that you have to make every move by yourself and that's different than the new games like dragon age for example it's fun and it's a great RPG game but you get the feeling that you're playing a strategy war game cuz you just target the enemy and the hero starts attacking
In my opinion most of the people who played Gothic 2 didn't like it cuz it was simply too difficult
you have to grasp everything on your own in this game and that's what makes it unique
I feel sorry though for this great game cuz they killed it in gothic 4
it's one of the worst RPG's i ever played
I love Gothic 2 and the expansion Night of the Raven. Never crashed, just few bugs... IT'S A WONDERFUL GAME. Alot of quests, huge world to discover, even more if u play the expansion NOTR
What i liked in this game is that you have to earn different classes. For example to become a paladin you have to do some quests to become a militia man, then a knight and then a paladin (well not really a paladin, but to get a paladin's armor) same with other classes. I like meritocracy: everyone gets what they deserve. I hate RPGs were you are from the beginning a knight or something like that but you are fighting with a wooden sword. In history to become a knight you had to prove yourself worthy or to be super rich. There were no knights in wooden or leather armor and wooden or copper sword. It's Pathetic. They were like super elite forces. like today's SEALS or SAS. And you don't see a SEAL fighting with a BB gun :))
Gothic II is the definition of RPG! You can't say you played a good RPG if you haven't played Gothic 2 (or Gothic 1). And like someone said there are more than 3 ways to play this game: there are 3 classes - paladin, dragon hunter and mage and a few subclasses - two-hand fighter, one hand fighter, archer, crossbower, few types of mage (can't remember cause haven't played in a while). so do the math how many different types of a character you can make. And every type brings you a lot of fun. The other thing i liked about this game is that you can control the fight (every click or push of a button is a swing of the sword) and when you advance in level you get some combos (very few though). Great story, Great world(you can explore almost any corner of the world) , Great characters, Great music, Great gameplay, Great ALL. One of the few games that made me think to solve a puzzle or a hard quest, not like in other games when a hard quest means you must walk from one point to other 100s of times for hours, or kill tons of stupid monsters. By the way monsters are very realistic and you don't have to kill them all right away to complete a quest or something, i had fun just running with a tail of orcs into the valley of mines castle VERY FEW BUGS. Try it! I surely did once and then 11 more times
i like how the story turns.free roam.it can run on low specs.,huge map, cool magic tricks, but the thumb down part is lots of glitches, poor combat interface, etc.
Gothic 1 and 2 are pure classics, never felt such a pleasure when playing like these two games! Wonderful stories, great realistic atmosphere, amazing gameplay and uncountable sum of hours spent! I never was disappointed, even if bugs appeared, it gave me lots of joy trying to finish all the quests, there were so many of them!
very good rpg!! I finished 2 times, no bugs it was the best game to his time ..
the best RPG ever
the Gothic and the gothic 2 were the best rpgs i've ever played. haven't had any bugs whatsoever. and controls are hard to master but they are the best controls i could've asked for. you control the flow of combat. it's like you are the one trowing spels or waving a sword and not a character. and about the quests... you have to find them and sometimes there are some quest with tha same mission and have to choose wich one to comlete and the storyline is great as well. through have to say the third gothic and arcania (gothic 4) aren't the same (controls, char proportions, weapons even plot)
and about some one saying he/she played ALL 3 ways... there are more :D
Awesome game, some of the best RPG's I've ever played. Maybe it's just my luck, but my game never crashed and I haven't found any bugs to destroy my excitement. Great graphics, great story, a 9/10 game.
Ya is a very good game without bugs or whatever some are saying the only bad thing is that the buy-sell system was very bad contructed
I have to laugh at all the comments (from 6 months ago) complaining about bugs and control issues.
The game is over 8 years old.
Read that again. The game is over 8 years old (release Nov 2002 in Europe).
Owning a PC, I am not limited like consoles, so if I wish to play an old game (say... NWN 1) the first thing I do is google the forums of the modding community (if it exists) and check up for all the fan made patches / improvements / graphic upgrades.
Gothic II has these.
They remove all the bugs.
They "fix" elements other players have found irritating.
They make the game excellent (it always was excellent, just a little unpolished).
@ the topic starter. Stick to a console, you obviously don't know how PC games work.
Hint: Modding communities. EIGHT YEARS.
When I first started the game I turned it off after only 15 minutes. I couldn't stand it. The character movement felt strange and everything else just felt wierd. But then my friend told me how much he was enjoying it and that I realy should give it a proper chance. So I did, and ended up spending my entire summer indoors playing through the game with all 3 storylines.
Afterwards I went and I played the first Gothic to understand the story better, and I noticed what an incredible improvement Gothic 2 had been.
This is the perfect example on how RPGs should be made. Perfect mix of action and RP elements.
My second best RP game of all time.
currently playing night of the raven version, very good game and doesn't look too dated. not my number one but certainly worth checking out.
i havent encountered any bugs at all. (maybe on release it was buggy but not now)
yea i also dont recall any problems with my gothic 2 other than me being too young to figure simple **** out lol. but was insane awsome game i would love to have it right now but sadly my little brother got hold of the play cd lol and it wont work on my new computer >_>.
Best RPG in history! I dont know why you said there's bugs but there arent! This is the ultimate RPG ever! Still playing strong
gothic 2 what can i say my favorite experience ever in a rpg game fortunately i have never experienced any game breaking bugs in my time with it and i have completed the original 6 times and with the expansion night of the raven 6 more my last playthrough was just this summer 2010 (win 7) and its still fabulous a sidenote for all gothic 2 fans who has not tried it i would really recomend gothic 2 velaya a fan made mod 20-30 hours long its a pretty impressive mod
completed this. one of the handful of rpgs i have completed because it was so good. this and arx fatalis are definate shelf winners. every place is different theres no same old same old **** like with the oblivion dungeons.
Simply AMAZING rpg...This is how all rpg games should be designed and meant to be played...Stunning sceneries (considering it s almost 10 years old) and top rate design in the story section. Not my first rpg but surely of the same quality as Witcher,Neverwinter,Diablo (series) and Icewind Dale.
this was my first RPG too....and i am not tired of it...
it is hard to play specially at the beginning but not bugy,in its own time it was the best
it was my first too and it was great
to the upper ones: i think you mean gothic 3
my first RPG game and I can say its the only RPG with a HEART...
regarding controls, its hard to master at first, but when trained properly, its the best control I ever seen...
in most of the RPGs the combat turns to click and watch, but the combat happens real time in this game, that required the player to focus and perfect timing...
This is the mother of rpg's. I have played it, enjoy it, no bugs what so ever. The story is great. The first guy wrote a comment that the game is made "poorly" and it's difficult for him to play the game, at his point that guy should look to the settings screen some time to find the answers to his problems whit the controlls, i can assure you there is an easier way to play this game. And about the graphics , that game was made 2002 so in those days it was extreme game whit extreme computer demands.
Agreed, a very promising looking game with some good depth but rife with bugs and the worst combat interface ever. I persevered for ages but in the end gave it up as a frustrating second-rater.
God, I hate this game. There were a million bugs. I couldn't get through playing a session without it crashing on me about 5-6 times. It's been a while since I played a game that had so many bugs, the last one that was like this was Elder Scrolls II Daggerfall.
I gave up on Gothic 2, not just because it froze so many times, but because there were times when a new mission came up but there were no new entries in the log, and I tried running all around the place talking to people trying to get a clue, but found nothing. I had to check a walkthrough to find the answer. Gothic 2 is a poorly made and poorly structured game, and what was with push the left mouse button AND move forward attack, you had to press both to attack not just the mouse button.

This game rocked! O.K. I agrree the story wasn't comparable to BGI/II but the level design was better. And admit that the story wasn't too bad either. I imagine this game with NWNII-graphics...
very nice game. i remember the ng+, you could enable it in the config-program(nightmare mode, i believe). unfortunatelly i had to stop in the 2nd or 3rd act, because those orks REALLY are hardassed when they hit a high level.
true, no character developement/speaking to your group, but still some lovely written quests and dialogue-lines.
good example of how to do a linear, non-open world rpg...should be higher than 16(atm)
8/10
Baldur's Gate didn't use the 3.0 ruleset. It was still the old school THAC0 crap.
I used to play Baldur's Gate an Planescape Torment before i played IWD2 and I thought - this game is lame. I reinstalled it this year (2012) after finishing Mass Effect 2 & Dragon Origins - and I thought "IWD 2 rocks!" Compared to modern so-called RPGs Icewind Dale is equal to Baldur's gate saga - especially it was made by the same guys that created Planescape Torment & KOTOR II!
Meh. The Icewind Dale games were both desperately linear dungeon crawlers, using, I think, the 3.5 ruleset instead of BG's 3.0. With some expansion, some side quests of merit, and maybe even a little (social) character development, they could've been contenders. Yet they were never built for that, and even at the time served as a stop-gap service for better RPGs. If you love the combat from BG2, and want more but aren't too bothered about the story or questing, then this is an acceptable dungeon crawler. Don't think that because it is of the same era that it is any more than that however. 5/10
Yeah, the leveling system was amazing and the fact that you could kill anyone in the game(even though you had to restart becuase you needed them). The hundreds of decisions that you could make were also great.
Not to forget the best dnd character creation and leveling system with so many opportunities.
Oh, yeah. I remember this. Icewind Dale 2 is just a beautiful game. I just want to say that the soundtrack is awesome. I mean, I don't even want to talk about gameplay.

Great, long story , old-school RPG with many RPG elements. If you want to survive , you have to have tactics , or luck !

Its a great game,i hope theyl will make Drakensang 2,but to be more like The Dark Eye not like stupid and boring River of Time.
lovely game this is and such a wonderfull world they ahve created truly wonderful cant complain with 1 exception that the atributes are limited such a shame about that
great game to bad you cant return in the locations you already been bec of this i have lost some quests dam it it could have been a greater game if not for that minus
How can this game be higher than it's sequel if it's worst in almost every aspects? Yes yes, there's a lot of content, but this game is very far from being perfect, and also can't be better than The River of Time
A friend got me this game.
I must say... Graphics are quite nice, but I just don't get 'the feel' of this game.
I HATED that wherever I went, everything was a goddamn labyrinth in which I had to run for half an hour a least.
The characters, I found them shallow. I got no feel in them and they all seemed soulless to me.
But I really enjoyed the grahics and details.
That's one thing I will never forget
Very underrated and difficult to find in the USA. Plays and looks a lot like NWN2. It's a shame that the media hardly covered it.
If your looking for a good story, you got it
If your looking for gfx you got it
If your looking for music, well it depends on what you like
If your looking for character creation, you got it (though i dont like the system)
If your looking for something which makes you play this game... you need to find it your self as the game dont offer it.
In Baldurs Gate, you had to do something. Your in danger, your father dies for you, but he keeps secret as to why, Jaheria doesnt tell a thing and just tell you to tag along, assassins show up after you, why ? It all makes you want to play the game.
Dakensang doesnt have any of this and the companions are... poor... I didnt get to play this game far, was too bored of it.
I just played the demo, solid game but to say > than Dragon Age? IDK, tough call. Dragon Age had the best storytelling in the history of games. I'm not saying it had the best story, but the way it delivered it was unreal. DAO2 is gonna be naaaaaasty... With that being said, I may buy Drakensang as it's def under-rated and deserves higher than a 7.0 or 7.5 like Gamespot and Ign gave it.
This is hands down the best RPG to come out in the last several years. In a world positively overrun with MMORPGs and not many single players coming out, this was definately a gem. Some translation issues, but you can easily find the answers to any of your questions online. Way better than Dragon Age, but that's just me. One thing, though, it is not as simplistic a game as most RPGs on the market. Decent math skills will help you out a lot and make the game a lot easier. The line "you have to have tactics, or luck" is true if you're not so good with the numbers...

Excelent role playing, exciting and entertaining, allows the player to really feel and became the character and to control its own life in the game.

Still have the song from Chiasm in my head while 'dancing' in the club of Santa Monica: "The monsters make me hide, perhaps I'll eat myself alive...internally. What is there left for me to be." And those shivering moments my first time in the haunted hotel... sob. Or try to hook up the graveyardkeeper and kill the nasty tastin zombies. Great times...
Could've been amazing, santa monica level was great downtown was ok hollywood was great.
Combat sucked, guns underpowered.
If someone would remake the end levels and combat mechanics it would be recommended.
People get so butt-hurt about things not living up to their sequels. I have never played Redemption but i really really enjoyed Bloodlines. It is crazy buggy and a bit dated but there is a huge amount of story and dialogue that really make the game special. Plus the vampire setting is done amazingly. The ending of the game was really weak for what I expected after so much build up but still a solid game.
One of the best true rpg's till today. One of the very few games where the npc's actually have kind of a personality and aren't just people with question marks floating above them. Wouldn't be worth the while without the amazing fan patches though, since it has been bugged beyond believe in it's release version, even with the official patch it still had been pretty much unplayable. Definitely adult content though ;)
Best vampire rpg ever. Most well-thought-out if a tad small maps, and absolute best dialogue and voice acting in any game I've come across. I can't believe more games didn't come out following in the sneaky dark shoes of this jewel of the night.
Tbh it sucked compared to Vampire the masquerade: Redemption, Redemption had a better storyline and far better combat system
Glad to see this on the list. Played thru a couple of times and loved the story. The game is quite a different experience when you play different types of vampire. Final fight can be a let down as you can sit tight and do almost nothing. The first time I played it I found bits of genuinely scary which always heightens the pleasure.
Loved playing this game...only drawback there was a bug where I could never finish storyline
How can you possibly compare this game to Dynasty Warriors? VTMB is easily the best vampire themed PC rpg, and one of the best fps/rpg hybrids thus far. Each supporting character was crafted with love for a deeper emotional attachment, the character models were fantastic for it's time, and the gameplay required more thought than the Halo or Call of Duty franchises that so many misguided "gamers" hold so dear.
For the first three quarters of the game, it was a contender for my favorite RPG ever. For the last quarter, it was a ****ty version of Dynasty Warriors.
This was a fun game but I wouldn't put it this high on the list. It had too many weird glitches, the combat was awful, and the story and characters were very cookie-cutter. It is the best vampire-based game I've ever played though.
Really good, you should try this one. A bit dark though :) It looked great at the time, now it's a bit old but still captivating. There are some mods for it and patches to get rid of the bugs.

i dont like the magic either but everything else its ok great game
The magic system was awful. If you needed to cast under pressure, you can't do it.
Also the interface was very clunky and the movement\looking around was terrible.
Only good thing are the graphics for the time.
2/10
Arx Fatalis ,Gothic1,2 are the ones RPGs that are classic are they really are hard 2 play not for amateurs but still i enjoyed them as hard as they were just as a comment below me the yquest in the crypts was one of the hardest quests in Arx
all true about the comment below this one you have 1 point from me
I remember playing Arx Fatalis, but I couldn't figure out how to get into the Crypts, so I had to stop playing the game. It was a very cool game up to that point, though, and it's underrated! The magic system involved drawing symbols in the air with your mouse cursor, and it made it feel like you were really casting a spell. The melee combat was cool (and gory). Overall, this game should at least be rated 85% by any respectable review site.
this game should have a better rank in this list one of the best RPG i recommend it guys to play it just awesome
the setting is really GREAT!! sth new and fresh!
the story is...mediocre at best(you are the chosen alien saint who came to destroy evil blahblah)
the fighting is okay, the magic is...a shining example of innovation.
as for rpg elements, it was very linear, and you were mute if i recall correctly, but still it is one of the better titles to waste your lifetime away with^^
I played it as a warrior. Having to draw glyphs with my mouse in order to cast magic drove me crazy. I hated that. BTW, a great RpG that attempted to give the player a new interactive experience.
One of the last pure dungeon crawls and a decent game to boot.
lol @ first comment
flour and water does not make pastry.
who uses wine in apple pie?
burn down a whole wood just to bake a pie?
seems kinda wasteful.
YES THIS GAME DESERVES TOP 10 its superb. the casting was great fun having to draw the spell manually whilst being attacked to let it rip. BRILLIANT GAME. it must be good because i can remember playing it .
Arx Fatalis is one of my favourite RPG-s. The story is great, I think, and I remember when I realized that I can bake applepie: Take flour, water, rolling pin, apple and wine. Mix up flour and water. Nope, it's not over yet, because you don't want bread, you must use rolling pin. Now you have a nice pie, but it will be more delicious with apple, so use it on pie. Applepie! But it's not over, you can give to it some wine. Voila! Applepie with wine! Now you should bake it. There are some woods. Use a flame spell, the wood is on fire, put the applepie next to the fire, and after some moments cooking is over. It was in 2002!!!

The best thing about this game is the freedom to do the quests as you wish and to explore the maps but everything else its great to.
i finishe this game like 4-5 times wit hall kind of chars awesome game indeed
i enjoy playing this game 2 much for my sake reminds me of Warcraft 3 in some ways great game you should play it
one of the best games ever should have a better place in the list
this game is pretty good i played it twice and i stil enjoyed it the second time is not a rpg but its a good game
meh...it really is more like a rts with rpg elements...
it was nice to play for the first 20 hrs or so, but after a while, you realize that most of the time you spend is when you try to place your units in a matter that they wont be slaughtered(no formations whatsoever) and then realise, that you have this group of heroes and the uber-unit too, who make up like 60% of your actual strenght...
and then you will have seen all units/races/uber-units, the music gets boring.
dont get this wrong: it is not a bad game, if youre into rts, but not very likely one of the best rpgs ever made, and DEFINATELY not at 36....
in the spellforce series i must say the 1st + expansions was a Thrill to play esp in the beginning choosing what u wanted to be, all the different builds, which companions u wanted to take, Gold was actually worth something :), just a GREAT Rts // RPG :)

The music in the game is epic it gives you the feeling as if you are really in the game and when an orc is chasing you it feels like so real as if you are really there oh its just as great game everything about it the best.
I have so many good things to say about this game! If you're a big fan of the RPG genre you will absolutely LOVE this one! Gothic 2 is even better!
i know that some already said it but i have to say it to,before Gothic i only played games like NFS,Starcraft,Warcraft,HOMM,Disciples and so on but after i tried all RPG i found out there so thanks Gothic that you showed me that RPG games are great to
yea ever for me this was my first RPG game i ever played until i played it i never liked RPG games but after this awesome game now i only play RPG games and this game ever after so long is still one of the best RPG games ever
this great games surely deserves a better rank than this come on people Gothic is a true RPG
You just have to play it. Graphics get old, but the game's amazingness will never fade!
yea Gothic is only second to Gothic 2 just amasing games this series are to bad about Gothic 3 oh and need a higher score
I will never forget when I first came at swamp base at midnight.
This is an awesome game. After played it, I knew that all games to come will be referenced to it and I am desperate that no one will wake up a similar atmosphere.
this game its just awesome the feeling playing it its like you really are in the game it deserve a place better than this
Second RPG i played (after Gothic II :D) and they both rule RPG genre. you really feel in control of your character and i was never bored when played it. TES Oblivion and many other "great" RPGs gets boring after a while when you have to do the same dungeons all over again. in Gothic i+II 1 or 2 dungeons but they are big and different from each other. You will never get borred playing these games. The downside (the good side for some) that its hardcore RPG you will have to really get into it.
epic game, epic story,i dont have words to say what im feeling when im playing this game....its just the best,,,and not just gothic...all the series...even gothic 4.....
The best game i ever seen!!! The world of gothic = Casts, magic, sword, mysteries, enemies
CUT THEM ALL!!!!
It actually is a true masterpiece! It is the most innovative game there ever was. I personally finished the game 9 times and I have done all the quests. No better experience out there...
A lot of people are writing that this was the first rpg they ever played. That explains a lot.
This game should not be anywhere near the top 50 when you have games like Ultima 7: Black Gate, Wizardry 7 and Betray at Krondor around.
For me to was the first and the best Rpg i ever played it made me feel than i really was a part on that world not to mention that is a bit old but still its a great game even till this day and is far better than G2 and G3
Played through it multiple times.
One of, no actually, the BEST RPG i have ever played.
Brings back old memories, ahh.
I just loved the medieval atmosphere and voice acting , the environment and the people, even though it's a bit buggy.
Gothic is the best rpg of all times, gothic 2 was its worthy successor but thats where it ended sadly. Story, gameplay, skill system, and roleplaying elements were as good as it could get. Its too bad that the developers went off track. No other game left so many good memories, when i think about gothic its like im thinking about my own past, like it happened to me. It starts with "Welcome to the colony *punch to the face*" and ends with credits. I have been looking for a game thats comparable but i couldnt find any. This game should be ranked #1
my first RPG game. Really this game made me realise wat RPGs are.
The game is awesome. Even now is one of the most played RPG games. For 256MB of RAM is just brilliant. I love it! It was the first game that I played ever. Yeah, it had a lot of bugs but the game was created before 11 years...
I think this is one of the most revolutionary and most awesome RPG games ever made the story isnt that great again an big bad demon wants to rule world, but the plot twists are soo unthinkable, but the world in wich it is placed, is soo great. Hands down on one of the best RPGs.
the second guest took the words from my mouth... feels the same way...
Personally, I feel the Gothic series is better than Elder Scrolls series, when it comes to STORY and a sense of HEART
gothic was my first true RPG too. I loved it. The storyline was amazing. The first is the greatest, and all bugs have been ironed out with patches. Amazing game.
can only agree on that. no idea how the english version is, but the german original created the best atmosphere I experienced so far (at least medieval..maybe vampire:bloodlines was better, loved the setting and voice acting there as well)! I like the "the elder scrolls" games, but I still think that a small but changing world together with a good story explaining it size is nicer to live in than in some world with the size of great britain (tes2:daggerfall!). You guys HAVE to give it a try. way better than its sequels btw..
First rpg I ever played and it's just the best, screw bugs and stuff, there is no better Story than in Gothic, some nice eastereggs.

This game is not a crpg and doesn't belong here but besides that there is no way Heroes 4 can creep into any list where the Heroes 3 is.
this doesnt worth this rank greater than Gothic 1,2,Spellforce,Arx Fatalis,Mass Effect,Vampire the Masquerade and so on, no way this rank maybe rank 40-50
to the guy 2 below me:
It IS Heroes of Might and Magic 4. Check your facts. decent game, although the third is better. Currently up to HoMM6
This is a great game but the series it is in sort of works against it. Fans of the series give it no love because it was a departure from the first few games. Don't be fooled by the negative comments this game belongs on this list
4 added a lot of new ideas, the storylines and soundtrack were superior to the rest of the series, 3 is very good of course, but 4 impressed me the most tbh, 5 wasnt that good
this is mistitled and should say might and magic 4. this especially when combined with mm3 into the world of xeen are classics of the early days of pc gaming. it is now abandonware and can be found for free on the net though you will need dosbox to play them which i did just last year. extrememly dated graphics (its not even 3d) but it is still loads of fun.
It's funny how people have such different views of Homm4. It shouldn't really be compared to the rest of the series, as it is very different. It was much more of an RPG, while the rest are pretty much just tactical games. Please stop getting in fights over which is "better". there can be a world where heroes 4 and heroes 3 are both amazing, without having to talk about which one has the larger manhood.
I prefer the gameplay over the previous games and the story is ridiculously better than the 5th. The story is the best part of the game; it feels very down to earth and there is alot to read!
Well good sir your opinion is wrong i'm afraid. 3 was undoubtedly the best and 4 was most certainly the worst.
Seriously... This exact game in the series is the black sheep. HoM&M 2, 3, 5 and 6 are all better. 2 for its originality. 3 for its vast amount of added content. 5 because they corrected the mistakes they made in number 4 plus better graphics and flexibility... I haven't played number 6 yet, but I heard it should be on par with number 5.

Great game, vast and awesome world,to bad that the level cap is to low, after you get lvl 30 and all the perks you want it gets a bit boring, but just a bit guys,oh and the backpack is to low,at leas they could have made it to 500,like in Oblivion,i lost to many times,to much gear everywhere on the map, which i could have sold for more than a few bucks, who knows where i lost them, the world is big and thats how i like it.
ahh finally, people come to their senses...or rather, better games were released, and they saw a glimpse of what a real rpg is made of.
after hopes for the FALLOUT sequel after all those years, i played it and...the best first: the beginning/tutorial is very, very good. BUT: the story is just poor (any 5th grade with ads could do better),
and the gameplay is vats only, or die(cant even aim at the eyes/groin), "characters"are dull and boring/stereotype, sidequests...yeah right, half the world as a map and you have...what was it 20? sidequests(or even less...yeah they were said to be quests, but that would make the "give me water-dialogues" the sidequests, that cant be right...), no connection whatsoever to the original fallout franchise( wich would be ok if it didnt have mutants and the enclave in it, the do-gooders bos?!?!?!?! )
no SOUL. few funny/dark jokes, ambient, karma has little impact, difficulty is a bad joke(ever more curses on the awesomely bad levelscaling) and also... okay enough said, only this:
CRAP i say!
37 is still TOO HIGH!!!
*spitting on the ground in front of fo3s feet*
I played Fallout 1 & 2 as a kid when they came out. Believe me, the absolute last thing that I wanted from Fallout 3 was Oblivion with Guns. The great setting, art design and exploration don't come anywhere close to making up for the total lack of depth in plot, writing and mechanics. It really is just like any other Bethesda game - a huge, beautiful world that is great to trek around in but totally devoid of any life, character or intelligence.
Fallout 3 failed when it came to storry and world immersion. New Vegas should take it place on this list. Bethesda did way better with it's sequel (I don't consider them related to F1 and F2)
I have no idea why ppl hate this game. I played 1 and 2( 2nd is the best fallout :D) and i say that fallout 3 was also pretty good. It should be higher in the list!
Waaaay too low on the list. You shoot stuff in 1st person: get over it. Games don't play the same way forever, and if you doubt this is a good thing, play some Bard's Tale or Wizardry 1. Fantastic reinvention of a classic franchise.
Fallout3 have target audience of childrens.
I spend 2-3 months trying to found out anything as good as original. It was fail.
i loved fallout 1 and 2 and this one was even better although i would have liked to have had a vehicle to some degree like there was in fallout tactics and in fallout 2. it was a nice 3rd game but not quiet were i was hoping they would take it. they really seem to like to continue to take you to new parts of the usa and not lut you see any thing from the previous games really other then some tie ins like the brotherhood and dog meat and some such. i had great fun with this game and droping a nuke from a satalite in orbit via uplink about made me sh*t a brick (i thought it was a joke) untill 6 nukes droped near the relay... theres a rediculous amount of story if you have and put the time into finding it all. + the expansions. it was fun while it lasted im waiting to see how the fallout mmo turns out...
How is this at 47? This is an awesome RPG/Shooter. Maybe not the classic RPG formula, definitely one of my favorites though.
Very good RPG, i did however dislike the fact that shooting without using VATS was pretty damn difficult. Gameplay is as important as story in a STORY based GAME.
It is exactly like Oblivion with Guns. You need a comparable amount of mods to turn this FPS with Storyline into a RPG. Pro-Tip: Fallout Wanderers Edition
Fallout 2 is far superior to Fallout 3. The FPS gameplay in 3 also ruined the game for me.
One of the rpgs ever. Open world like Elder Scrolls with guns and mutants. People call it Oblivion with guns...naw...it's totally immersive with mods added... I'd say Morrowind with guns!!!!
Second favorite game ever. And considering how vibrant the modding community is, the PC version is practically limitless in it's replay value.
Some call it "Oblivion with guns". In a way, it actually is, it copies Oblivion's gameplay in a lot of ways, has the same stock background music when you turn off your radio.
It has the same atmosphere as Bethesda's Oblivion, after bearing the main story the game becomes monotonous pretty fast.
My recommendation is to get all the patches released for Fallout3. They extend the storyline quite good...
fallout is nice but its so freaking easy like you can kill the strongest creature in the game with a pistol if you use your ap wisely but other then that i reallt like it
After main quest FO3 lacked direction and felt so empty. This should be way down the list..Vegas is far better.
Both games are still a bit too easy even on harder levels. I stopped using vats 90% of the time.
I'm not that into post-apocalyptic rpgs. In fact I'm into medieval rpgs. I heard a lot about this game when I bought an HP with a decent graphics card in it and I was very hesitant to purchase it but I finally did. Ironically, I purchased this game before I purchased Oblivion and I didn't know how to customize the graphics yet they were still good. This game motivated me to purchase Oblivion and I THOUGHT IT BLEW.
Since then I've learned to overclock, I built my own gaming set up that would own the hp cardboard motherboard pc that I played this game on before.
With a q8200 Overclocked to 3.0 and dual gtx 260s, I configured this last year around this time, the game runs absolutely fabulous.
I never played the 1st 2 games but this game was unreal. I sincerely felt a connection with 3dog, and enjoyed the opposing side as I played the game around the 4th of July.
I thought the gameplay was solid but vats made it better IMO, yet some people didn't like it.
Overall I'd say the game had one of the best storylines next to dragon age and the original legacy of kain.
I've played the fallout series quite a bit in my days, and I feel Fallout 3 + New Vegas are some of the best recent RPG's I've played lately. I've had no problems with the gameplay whatsoever. Though there are a few exploits that could be fixed, it's never made it any more difficult. (Even on Hardcore + Hard Difficulty) I rarely used vats, and only did so in situations where I wanted the bullet time effect (Sniping mostly.) Other then that it's an all around good game, sure, it's not based around a medieval world, but it's compareable to our own in a sorts. The graphics were stunning and the sheer size of the world (compareable to oblivion or morrowin) was more then enough to keep me playing. I don't see why so many people complain about gameplay or the weapons system. I guess it's just that you people plain out suck at games like this and can't stick it out and would rather just talk rubbish about it. I didn't use many mods the first time I played through, but in the second run with a new character I used a great plethora of different difficulty increasing and general tweaking mods to make it seem more real or make over-powered equipment less so. Which worked out splendidly. I'm guessing some of you who post your rants on the gameplay or 'dullness' of this particular game and those similar have no experience in software development or graphics design. Let's see you do any better.
It's like oblivion but with a bad weapons system and just as bad voice acting, plus the graphics are really dull. Lots of fun to play, but it's an easy game even on the hardest difficulty setting.
